Veronica Salcedo - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Veronica Salcedo

Veronica Salcedo | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 21

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Dorval

BIO: Veronica is in her second year at Concordia University, studying Sociology. She then wishes to obtain her degree in International Business.

Veronica loves traveling and embracing her culture as she comes from two strong cultural backgrounds, Italian and Mexican.

She has visited many great cities like Rome, Mexico City, Miami, New York, and Washington DC. So, pursuing a career in International Business is ideal for her future.

Veronica loves fashion due to all the creativity that is involved in the process of designing. She also enjoys learning and understanding issues that are going on in the world to better understand the importance of living in a country like Canada.

It is important for her to give what she can to others (especially children) that are less fortunate so they can be able to have better education to improve their lives. For Veronica, education is crucial in everyone’s life because it is the foundation of free will.

Moreover, Veronica feels learning from experiences is an important part of life. Many positive aspects come out of it like discovering who you are, becoming more educated, and using these tools to better yourself in life.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

I speak English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love traveling. As cliché as it may sound, it is more than true. It is therapy for me! Last year I visited four Mexican cities. I love embracing my Italian and Mexican backgrounds. They are both so different but, are both so full of life and culture! When I am here in Montreal, I love participating in sports like soccer and kick boxing with my friends. I love going downtown in the summertime! It is my favorite time of the year in Montreal.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I have participated in ballet, figure skating, and jazz ballet.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

For almost all my life I played competitive soccer. I enjoy it a lot. For quite a while I was in competitive swimming also.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I would say my sister is a huge influence in my life because she is older and has always been there for me. She has accomplished so much and I really look up to her. We have also been through a lot and she taught me how to be a stronger person. For a while, I was not sure what I wanted in my future and she helped me figure it out.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Since the age of sixteen I have suffered from a disturbing anxiety disorder. I had always thought I could control whatever happened in my life and that nothing could ever go wrong for me. I would look at people who were going through a rough time and think, “That will never happen to me.” Then it did happen. I was devastated. I would think about my future and literally see absolutely nothing going for me. It really worried me. I was completely drained. It may not seem as it was a big deal but this really sucked the life out of me. I then realized that if I thought of my anxiety as a life obstacle to become a stronger person I could live a better life. I thought of the great things I wanted to do and I started to love life again. I started to think positive. I am a much more humble and empathetic person now.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I think the most interesting thing about me is that I have so much patience with people. I like to always make people feel comfortable and will always accommodate to them. At the same time though, this is not mistaken for weakness. I will not let anyone step all over me.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I want to finish my degree in International Business and so accomplish this I must defeat procrastination! If you put effort and you’re work will be efficient and there is no way you could ever see failure!

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I would love to market for a high-end clothing brand like Marchesa, Balenciaga, Balmain, or Yves St. Laurent. It would be amazing to work with such beautiful pieces and show them to the world. Participating in a fashion show would be ideal!

Are you currently a student?

Yes

Area of study:

Sociology

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I work at Harry Rosen Inc. as a Customer Service Rep.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

Growing up I lived with my mother and my sister. My parent got divorced before I could even remember. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and we didn’t have a lot of money so, I was never spoiled. My mother and grandparents raised me with an iron fist. I love them for this because I see how other people have grown up spoiled and you don’t appreciate and feel gracious when you move forward in life. It sucks the fun out of life. Although I felt different growing up without a father because believe it or not most of my friends still lived with both their parents and children don’t realize it can hurt when they ask you question about your father. But when I got to high school, other classmates didn’t question me about it and there were a lot more people that had parents who were divorced and I felt a lot more comfortable talking about it. My father is an amazing person, it was hard for him to come visit my sister and I though which put a burden on all of us.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I never had an unusual job but, I have worked with unusual people. For example, I wanted to work at the tanning salon near my house. I spoke to the owner and told him I would like to bring in my CV and before I could even finished my sentence he hired me! I was not even allowed to work there because I was 17 and the law states that you cannot work alone in an institution until you are 18 years old. Everyone I worked with was very odd, and in the end my mother refused to let me work there! It was very “sketchy”.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have volunteered for fund raisers and the Dorval nursery home for the Royal Bank of Canada. I also plan to volunteer for the Heart and Stroke foundation this upcoming month.

What is your most unusual talent?

I am able to have my toes touch my forehead! Trust me it is not easy. No one I know is able to do this and all my gym teachers in CEGEP were impressed! I am very flexible!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have been to was my grandparents’ village in central-north Italy in the province of Le Marche. The village was named Peracchia. It was very deep into the mountain and to get there you had to drive on a dirt road on the side of the mountain and one wrong turn you were a goner! There was so electricity, no hot (or even running) water, no television, and no shopping! I loved it though. Everyone knew each other from when they were toddlers (everyone who lived there was about 75 on average). It was hard to not know anyone though seeing as the village was the size of half my street! I saw where my grandparents grew up and you see how much these people struggled, living in a poor environment and it made me very proud of my grandparents because they have accomplished so much. All the houses were made of stone and if you walk around you could see about two churches, a couple of donkeys, gardens full of vegetables and the beautiful view of the green mountain. I cannot wait to go back!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I want to work as a marketer for a global company. I want to be able to travel to other countries and market for different wants and needs for different cultures. Marriage and kids? Will have to see!

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

If you were to ask me what the greatest virtue in life is, I would say individuality! It defines who you are and makes you stand out from the crowd. If someone decides they do not like you for your individuality then let them be trapped in their bubble of ignorance. People will learn from your individuality and you will learn from them. Remember, education is freedom!

Venessa Facciotti | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 26

Height: 5'6"

Hometown: Langley

BIO: Venessa truly has a passion for helping other people and a love for her community.

She not only coaches elementary school kids basketball but mentors young women in the community who suffer with depression, teaching them values and skills to overcome their depression without the use of medication.

After a high school friend of hers lost their life due to the disease, Venessa has committed herself to being a positive advocate for depression and is fighting hard to educate people in her community that depression is not a personal choice, but is actually a serious illness.

She has even done a photo shoot while bungee jumping to help raise money for the Canadian cancer society and plans to go skydiving soon!

Venessa’s biggest passion comes from modeling, but she tries to focus her career on “modeling for a cause”, a term she came up with to help represent projects where she not only gets to represent beauty, but which also give her a voice to spread light and awareness regarding important community causes. Venessa believes her biggest asset is her voice and she is constantly using that tool to not only improve her own life, but to help improve the lives of people around her.

In addition to her schooling, Vaughan is also employed as a nurse in the Emergency Room at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Vaughan is passionate about empowering women. She is involved with an organization called EVOLVE Spa, a charity designed to help homeless women in Alberta.

Despite all life’s demands, Vaughan still loves to visit her home where she grew up on a bison ranch.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love the great outdoors and anything that allows me to enjoy nature. Some of my greatest times have been from camping. I enjoy sitting around a campfire, setting up tents, hiking, horseback riding, and I especially enjoy rafting. In the summer, I spend any extra time I have to go bike riding or rollerblading.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training [ACLS].

I am a certified Nail Technician qualified by Pro Nail Systems to do gel and acrylic nail application.

I have had music lessons for the Alto Saxophone, and I have also had a vocal training. My mother use to be a dance teacher, and from this I was taught in Jazz, tap, ballet, and baton during my younger years.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I enjoy sports and have always been one to jump at an opportunity to play whether I have experience playing the sport or not. I have been on sports teams including Basketball, Volleyball, and track and field. Recently I have been exploring the game of golf, I find this to be a good challenge in the summer months. One sport I have not yet had much opportunity to explore is tennis; I hope to be able to enjoy the game of tennis one day soon!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

There are many people who have had great influences on my life, to answer this question I will have to reflect on two people instead of one. Growing up I had four older brothers contributing to a greater amount of male influences in my life. However, when I was 7 years old I met two amazing friends by the names of Martha and DInora. Martha and Dinora were sisters and were both older than me. At a young age both had come to Canada with their mother and brother from Nicaragua. These two sisters were strong feminine influences in my life and were able to teach me about the beauty of being a woman. They showed me things about hair and makeup, high heels and city fashion. As role models, they held high values and strong morals, demonstrating the importance of family, love, and loyalty. Martha and Dinora became my first experience of what it was like to have sisters.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest accomplishment is a product of education. Growing up I was always interested in the health care profession. I chased after this desire and was accepted into the Bachelorette of Science in Nursing program. For four years I dedicated myself to my studies and have finished every year on the Dean’s honour roll list. I consider this a great accomplishment and feel the satisfaction of positive results after putting in such hard work.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

Growing up, I had seen first had the true meaning of generosity. Due to the fact our family owned a buffalo farm, I constantly witnessed my parents helping people in need, by supplying bison. In particular, my parents were active with various native aboriginal groups. Recognizing the value bison had to many tribes, my parents would give bison meat to aboriginal peoples. I also got to be part of a reconciliation meeting as our family supplied bison meat to elders of the Blackfoot Tribe. I consider it an honour and privilege to be part of something so important, unique, and memorable.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to one day follow in my older brother’s footsteps and become a medical doctor. This is going to be a long journey and one that requires hard work and dedication. For me, I considered nursing to be the most helpful undergraduate degree to prepare me for becoming a medical doctor. I will be enrolling in extra science courses needed for medical school and I will be studying to write the Medical College Admission Test [MCAT].

What would be your “dream job” in life?

If I could choose any job in the world, I would dream of being a Doctor working for the World Health Organization; dealing with health issues on an international level. I would like to advocate for health promotion and engage in partnerships were joint action is needed.

Are you currently a student?

Yes, until the middle of April when I graduate.

If yes, where?

University of Alberta/ Red Deer College

Area of study:

Bsc Nursing

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I am currently employed as a nurse in the Emergency Department at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was blessed with a very wonderful upbringing. I grew up on a bison farm and on a piece of land that had a river running though it. My childhood was full of adventure. With my four older brothers, I often found myself in enjoying activities on the farm including: swimming in the river in the summer, having mud fights, building forts, and in the winter we would be found making snowmen, starting snowball fights, and ice skating. My parents were both very loving and caring. They taught us the importance of loving others and doing kind things for one another. They demonstrated a healthy work ethic and showed us the importance of finding balance between life’s demands.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

The most unusual job I have had was when I was trained and hired to drive a small CAT (very similar to a BobCat). I helped to move fencing and pull out posts while driving the machinery.

I am very passionate about women empowerment. With this realization I have become strongly involved with an organization dedicated to helping homeless women. The charity is called EVOLVE SPA. The organization reaches out by providing services such as hair cutting and styling, facials, pedicures, manicures, facial waxing, and massages to those in need. These services are given by caring hands and helps to restore a sense of dignity and femininity to women who have been surviving with very little. You can learn more about the organization by visiting http://www.evolvespa.ca/

What is your most unusual talent?

As unusual as it is, I can fold my eyelids inside out

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Even though I have had the privilege to do some travelling to Hawaii and Mexico, the place I still find I hold the most value in, is Canada’s own Waterton National Park. I find the majesty of the mountains to be enticing, and the glacier lakes to be inspiring. The beauty of Waterton is almost unimaginable. The national park also has many activities to partake in and sights to behold such as hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, camping and much more. I also associate Waterton Park with many happy childhood memories, making the park even more valuable to me. Canada is an incredible country and it harbors some of the most unique and beautiful sights.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to have finished medical school and be using my skills and knowledge to help people not only in Canada, but those in places of the world where health care access is limited. In those ten years I would hope to have built on and made new friendships, to have learned more about myself, who I am, and what’s important to me. But, I also hope that I am surprised by where I am and what I am doing; leaving some things open to the unknown and room for adventure.

Vania Georgieva - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Vania Georgieva

Vania Georgieva | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 18

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Ottawa

BIO: Vania Georgieva is born on the outskirts of a small city in Bulgaria, located at the base of the Rila mountain range.

Being raised by her grandparents, on their large farm property, she was raised to help around the farm and grew up loving the outdoors.

She harbours a great love and appreciation for nature. This can be seen in her daily eco-friendly activities and her involvement in the growing green movement.

She immigrated to Toronto at the age of six with only her parents and sister, leaving all of her other relatives in Bulgaria.

This was a difficult separation that, in combination with learning a new language and adapting to a new country, could be quite overwhelming.

She was able to overcome these challenges and excel in her language studies.

This experience was the first of much relocation in her life, which taught Vania to love change and adapt to new surroundings with ease. Meeting a variety of people along the way, she developed a love for the act of meeting new people and befriending a variety of individuals.

During high school, she focused on a holistic approach to life. She was able to maintain academic proficiency, meanwhile donating a large portion of her time to volunteer work in the community. She often coordinated and hosted events in her old grade schools. Participating in local park clean ups, Terry Fox runs, fundraising events, and much more, she was also able to work part time providing child care fulfilling her love for working with children.

While doing this she never forgot her number one priority: family. Vania is very close to her family and feels one’s family has the greatest influence in their life. She thanks her family for all the opportunities they have provided for her and their continuous support through every adventure/challenge she takes on. Having this close relationship, Vania always put aside time to spend with her family.

Being far away from her family while completing her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science at the University of Ottawa is a challenge but as always, she focuses on the positive aspects of the situation and realizes the benefits of the final results. Once she finishes her education, Vania wants to be able to balance a career in international politics and humanitarian work around the world.

Throughout all the challenges that she faced, she found comfort in staying positive and being motivated by the words of an inspirational author, Robin Sharma: “Dare to dream that you are more than a sum of your current circumstances.” Vania believes that people should never stop trying to disprove other’s definition of impossible and that everyone has the strength within to achieve anything they truly desire.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in Bulgaria and moved to Canada when I was six years old. In Bulgaria I grew up in a house on the outskirts of the city, located at the base of the Rila mountain range. I grew up surrounded by nature and animals. My grandparents had a large property with many vegetable gardens and raised many animals. I was raised to help around the house and grew up loving the outdoors. When I moved to Canada, I entered school right away and had to learn English quickly. As a young child I did not understand the situation as well as my older sister, which in a way actually made the transition much easier for me. We would go back to Bulgaria during the summers to visit all of our relatives. Until high school I moved schools quite often. I lived in southern Ontario (Windsor area) from when I was 8 until the end of high school. From an early age I had the opportunity to travel and learn to adapt to changing environments. My diverse childhood has contributed greatly to the person I have become today.

Tara Davy - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Tara Davy

Tara Davy | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 25

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Whitehorse

BIO: My name is Tara Anne Davy, I’m 25 years old and I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon! Growing up in this small town has taught me the values and skills which made me the person I am today.

I am blessed to say I have a wonderful family who has always shown me unconditional love, support and acceptance!

I value surrounding myself with my family, friends and my dogs, that’s one of the most important parts of my life!

I graduated High School in 2005, and moved to Vancouver to do the first year of my Business Administration degree at Capilano University.

I did some travelling and then moved back and started working for the Government of Yukon for the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the Deputy Minister’s Office in 2008.

Just a few of my hobbies consist of reading books and fashion magazines, doing yoga, exercising, being outdoors and even knitting!

I’ve always had an intuitive passion to listen, help and support people and genuinely has compassion for anyone in need. I love to travel and aspire to visit many more places in the world.

Even though Whitehorse is a small town, I whole heartedly believe that representing the Yukon in the Miss Universe Canada Pageant would be without a doubt the most exciting and notable experiences in my life! I’ve always been passionate about the fashion and modeling industry and I know I can be a great advocate to be a role model to girls and woman everywhere!

My aspiration is to inspire everyone to pursue their dreams even when they may seem unattainable! I genuinely believe I possess the necessary qualities to represent my Territory and our Country, Canada! An affirmation of mine is that if you believe in yourself; with hard work, you can accomplish anything. I’m a big believer in the power of positive thinking! I strive for an outgoing scope on life, to see the beauty in everything and make the best out of every situation I’m faced with! I know I possess the motivation and drive to be a successful delegate!

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English is my first language. I graduated at the grade 12 levels of French, so I’m quite familiar with it but do not speak it fluently.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I’ve always been interested in fashion and modeling! Growing up in Whitehorse because it’s such a small town with not much opportunity in that industry, it’s still been a passion of mine. One I feel I would be successful in pursuing! From a young age I’ve always kept up to date with all the entertainment industry, fashion, celebrities and current events! I especially love to spend time with my family, friends and my dogs! I enjoy being active and staying in shape, that could include being active outdoors, going to the gym or attending a yoga class! I absolutely love to travel and aspire to visit many more places around the globe, hopefully in the very near future!

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I danced for over 12 years between the ages of 5 to 17! The different genres of dance consisted of jazz, modern creative and hip hop! I stopped dancing just before I graduated but it’s something I would love to start doing again! I think dance is a great way to express yourself and such a fun workout all at the same time!

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Throughout high school I participated in Basketball and Indoor Soccer! I’m a very independent individual, I work extremely well in group settings, whoever I’ve never been really big into doing sports myself but I still love doing physical fitness, including walking my dogs, being active outdoors, working out at the gym, or doing yoga!!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I feel strongly about this question, besides the support and amazing upbringing from my parents I’d have to say the media has always had a huge influence in my life. It’s funny to think that because of the location I live in that it would affect me. As a matter of fact I always looked up to Paris Hilton which may seem juvenile but she’s a brand, she’s a successful business woman and she never let the media ruin or establish who she was as a person. She embraced herself for who she was and even when things that were out of her control happened, she still stood up for what she believed in and that can be hard being in the public eye!

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

By far my proudest accomplishment other than participating in Miss Universe Canada has to be a couple months ago when I purchased my very first townhouse!! It was a big step for me to have my first mortgage by I’m very proud of myself that I was able to do it!!

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I would have to say I think the most unique or interesting thing that has ever happened to me is a compilation of all my memorable experiences of all the amazing locations I have travelled! Everywhere I go if it’s Skagway, Alaska, The Bahamas or Thailand I’ve always met such amazing people and I’m thankful for all those experiences. I love learning about new cultures, trying new things and seeing new and interesting places in the world! There’s something so exciting about visiting a new place and I want to continue to add to my list!! The world’s wonders are endless and I hope to get to live much more that it has to offer!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My ambition is to have a career that I love, one that makes everyday a new and exciting challenge where I can meet new people and learn new things! I’m very open to having a career where I could be travelling all the time! I would definitely describe myself as a people person!

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I’ve always dreamed of being a Victoria’s Secret model, as silly as that may be I think that life of travelling and luxury would be so amazing! I feel any job that I could work with people and travel all over the place would be so fantastic! That’s also why I feel that competing for the role of Miss Universe Canada would be beyond anything I could imagine and a definite dream job for me as well!

Are you currently a student?

Not at the moment, but I plan to further my education in the near future!

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I’m currently working permanently for the Yukon Government as an Office and Administrative Assistant. I work for the Deputy Minister in the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I’ve been working there for approximately 4 years!

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon! Our community and capital city of the Yukon has a population of about 25,000 people is small yet still has a lot to offer! A ton of hiking trails and lakes surround what’s known as the Wilderness City, as well as the Yukon River which flows right through town! Visitors are often surprised to learn that Whitehorse has pretty much all the amenities and comforts of a big city! My childhood was memorable, I’m very close with my parents Buster and Cheryl and sister, Kelly! I’m very blessed to have a family that’s always shown me unconditional love, support and acceptance! We’ve always spent lots of time together as a family; walking our dogs, visiting our cottage on Tagish Lake for a weekend getaway! We also travel outside of the Yukon to hot destinations or to visit family in British Columbia or Ontario. Growing up in the Yukon has taught me the values and skills which made me the person I am today, and of course I have my parents to thank for my upbringing! My parents have always been very supportive with everything that I do and they continue to do that even though I’m out on my own!

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I would say my most interesting job was back in high school over the summer time I worked at a fairly new tourist attraction in the Yukon. It’s called the Yukon Suspension Bridge at the Tutshi Canyon which is located on the Klondike Highway, just a few miles north of the White Pass summit. It brings tons of tourists from all over the globe, it’s a short drive to Skagway, Alaska so people who dock in Skagway on the cruise ships would take day trips up to the bridge!! It was such a great experience, I got to meet so many people and see lots of wildlife! Bears, and Moose are just something of the norm up here!

List any volunteering you have done.

Back in high school I did volunteering for the Salvation Army at the soup kitchen, and I’ve always tried to donate my clothing, etc to the less fortunate! Throughout high school as a student we did lots of fundraising for different events such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. I’ve recently spoke with the President of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, which is part of the Humane Society in the Yukon. I’ve arranged to volunteer some of my time to helping with the animals at the shelter! I will be starting to volunteer beginning in March. J

What is your most unusual talent?

This question was the most difficult one for me, for the life of me I could not think of an unusual talent that I have! I don’t see this as unusual talent but maybe a trait in my personality but lots of people that I meet always say they feel safe in my surroundings, I make them comfortable and they put trust in me. I truly care for each and every person in my life and even people I haven’t met yet. I’ve always had just a general caring sweet nature and I think that’s why I can call so many people my friends and so many more to come. J

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have ever been to has to be Thailand! I travelled there for an entire month in 2007 and visited lots beautiful and interesting places in Krabi, Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Tao, Ko Pha-Ngan and Bangkok! The culture there is so interesting, the food was fantastic, the beaches were paradise and the people were always very kind, warm and welcoming! It was a huge eye opener; I will never take for granted the amazing opportunities we have in Canada and truly how lucky we really are!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years from now I will be 35 years old! I hope by then I will be pursuing all my dreams and working in a career that I love! I truly feel that Miss Universe Canada will open many doors for me and at the very least this will be such a memorable experience where I will learn so many new things and meet many fabulous people; I seriously can’t wait! I want to travel as much as I can; I see myself getting married and having children in the future, but furthering my education and establishing a career is more important at this point in my life!

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I think that you touched on many essential and important aspects of my life! The only thing I want to add is how thankful I am to have been chosen for this Pageant! I’m confident in saying that I will be a great representative from the Yukon Territory!!! The first ever delegate which is such a huge accomplishment for me!

Suzette Hernandez - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Suzette Hernandez

Suzette Hernandez | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 26

Height: 5'9"

Hometown: Vancouver

BIO: Suzette is a ramp model, an avid traveler and a fulltime commerce student. She is a health advocate who loves reading, singing, playing sports and volunteering in her community.

Growing up in Vancouver, she speaks fluent English, Tagalog and a bit of French. Living, in her terms, is defined by experiencing what the world offers.

True to her philosophy, she has travelled all over North America, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia.

She loves experiencing other cultures and hopes to be able to taste all the wonderful delicacies of traditional cuisines around the world.

Having modeled for seven years, she has grazed many runway shows, magazines, and has even been featured in a commercial as well as several TV shows.

When asked about what drives her, she proudly talks about her father.

Her dad’s courageous battle with cancer has been a source of strength for this little lady. In an interview she once said, “As in Oprah Winfrey’s words, ‘he allowed me to see that not even the sky is the limit.’”

The pain of her loss fuels her hunger for success and has made her a very multifaceted woman. Presently, she is pursuing her Degree in Marketing, and dedicates her spare time to her family and volunteer work—planning and organizing fundraisers to help those in need. She has been a member of the non-profit organization called the Batangas Club of British Columbia since 2004, fundraising to sponsor children with no means to pursue an education.

Suzette Hernandez believes that anything is possible through hard work, perseverance and determination. She hopes to incorporate the knowledge she has gained from her traveling adventures to best represent Canada’s distinct cultural mosaic as the next Miss Universe Canada 2012.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English and Tagalog

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love reading books, playing volleyball and traveling the world. I enjoy organizing charity events the most because it allows me to use my social skills as well as my business background and education for a greater good.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

Figure skating, swimming and vocal training

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Softball, volleyball, swimming, figure skating

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

Oprah Winfrey inspires me because her life story is a constant reminder that anything in this world is attainable with hard work, persistence, determination and motivation. I admire her charitable involvements and confidence.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

I recently donated my hair to the BC Cancer Society. A total of twelve inches of one length and virgin hair was cut. It was a huge sacrifice for me to have kept my hair that long especially while competing in pageants and modeling. The reason why I did was because I thought about the things that most women treasure in their lives. Hair is one of those things. I wanted to give my gift to those who are unable to grow it. Their happiness made it well worth the wait. I am proud to say that I would do it all over again

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I travelled back and forth from Canada to the Philippine Islands in 2010 and 2011 to model and do charity work. The Philippines has a high number of abandoned children. While I was there I volunteered my time at the local orphanage. Being able to care for these children made me more appreciative and broadened my perspective of life. In 2010, Philippine government officials presented me the Dangal ng Lahing Lemereno Award. Engraved under my name it states that the award exists:

In recognition of the honor and prestige that she has brought to the municipality, for being an embodiment of the true essence of being a Lemerena and for providing an inspiration and a worthy example for the young to emulate.

In addition, after several public appearances, the Philippine Star labeled me as “articulate” while the Manila Bulletin referred to me as a “health advocate”. Both are the most prestigious newspapers in the Philippines.

The most interesting thing about me is that I have a very passionate heart. I believe that time is best spent doing the things that matter most in life. I desire to make our society a better place and to give back to those in need so that they may have the same opportunities that I have had.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I would like to be the head of the marketing department for a global retail trade company. I have been a store manager for several years for a few well-known companies. Most recently, I was one of the youngest and successful store managers at Guess Inc., and I am currently pursuing my marketing degree so that I may be able to work at corporate office and pursue my ambition. After all, life is all about moving forward.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I would love to be a full time super model and a beauty queen so that I may be able to use my influence and title to be able to continue to make a difference in the world and empower our community.

Are you currently a student?

Yes

Area of study:

Business Commerce

Are you currently employed?

Yes, I am currently employed.

If yes, what is your occupation?

I am a part-time freelance model.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born by the tropical waters in a little village in Lemery, Batangas Philippine Islands. I had a very happy childhood. I was the youngest of four siblings and spent most of my days with family members. My mother used to tell me stories of how I started wearing heels just as I started to learn how to walk. She says that I’ve always played with my blankets, wrap them around my body and pretend that I was wearing a gown. My childhood is a big part of who I am today. I value the time that my parents took to raise me and I will always be grateful for their sacrifices.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I was hired to model for a live mannequin fashion show. I wore clothing from a high-end boutique at the Mercedes Benz opening gala in North Vancouver. It was unusual because I had to stay still for long periods of time and only move when it was time to change outfits. In the end, it turned out to be a lot of fun.

List any volunteering you have done.

For a few years I served as the vice president of the youth committee at South Vancouver Community Church, formerly known as the Filipino Christian Alliance Fellowship. Performing in the church choir and volunteering at the annual daily vacation bible school, I worked with two other dedicated members to arrange events for our weekly youth gatherings. Our mission was to host events that served as an alternative place for the youth during Friday nights. We aimed at developing a fun atmosphere for teenagers from all walks of life. Recently, I have fundraised for Habitat for Humanity, Dress for Success Vancouver, and the Batangas Club of British Columbia.

Presently, I am organizing a charity fashion show with silent auction for the SOS Children’s Villages in Nicaragua. The huge event is set to take place in downtown Vancouver in April and I am the head producer and organizer.

What is your most unusual talent?

I used to be a figure skater.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I have traveled to several countries and the most interesting place I have ever been to is Puerto Princessa, Palawan. It is located in one of the 7,107 islands in the Philippines. It is nestled between lush virgin forests and beautiful beaches.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

The one person, other than my parents, whom has had the most influence on my life, is my grandmother Lillian Sims. Throughout my whole life I have had a very close relationship with my grandma, and to this very day she is still one of my closest friends. She is a strong-minded woman with high morals and a big heart. She has taught me to always be true to myself and to stand up for what I know is right. Of the many pieces of advice my grandmother has given me over the past years, the one that has stuck with me the most is: “Never do anything today that you do not want to see on the front page of tomorrow’s newspaper.”

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment is turning my words and ideas into actions and starting an open-concept charity organization called “Here for Hope Charity Services.” I am excited to say that my group and I have bought a web domain and look forward to completing our website. Yet the most interesting place will always be my family’s dinner table during the holidays. With all my siblings’ different personalities at one table- it is always quite entertaining.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I will have achieved my goal of owning my own business and maintaining a healthy balance between my work life and my family life. In addition to this I hope to travel more and inspire more young women to let go of their insecurities and go after what they want in life as I have.
