Tara Davy | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 25

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Whitehorse

BIO: My name is Tara Anne Davy, I’m 25 years old and I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon! Growing up in this small town has taught me the values and skills which made me the person I am today.

I am blessed to say I have a wonderful family who has always shown me unconditional love, support and acceptance!

I value surrounding myself with my family, friends and my dogs, that’s one of the most important parts of my life!

I graduated High School in 2005, and moved to Vancouver to do the first year of my Business Administration degree at Capilano University.

I did some travelling and then moved back and started working for the Government of Yukon for the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the Deputy Minister’s Office in 2008.

Just a few of my hobbies consist of reading books and fashion magazines, doing yoga, exercising, being outdoors and even knitting!

I’ve always had an intuitive passion to listen, help and support people and genuinely has compassion for anyone in need. I love to travel and aspire to visit many more places in the world.

Even though Whitehorse is a small town, I whole heartedly believe that representing the Yukon in the Miss Universe Canada Pageant would be without a doubt the most exciting and notable experiences in my life! I’ve always been passionate about the fashion and modeling industry and I know I can be a great advocate to be a role model to girls and woman everywhere!

My aspiration is to inspire everyone to pursue their dreams even when they may seem unattainable! I genuinely believe I possess the necessary qualities to represent my Territory and our Country, Canada! An affirmation of mine is that if you believe in yourself; with hard work, you can accomplish anything. I’m a big believer in the power of positive thinking! I strive for an outgoing scope on life, to see the beauty in everything and make the best out of every situation I’m faced with! I know I possess the motivation and drive to be a successful delegate!

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English is my first language. I graduated at the grade 12 levels of French, so I’m quite familiar with it but do not speak it fluently.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I’ve always been interested in fashion and modeling! Growing up in Whitehorse because it’s such a small town with not much opportunity in that industry, it’s still been a passion of mine. One I feel I would be successful in pursuing! From a young age I’ve always kept up to date with all the entertainment industry, fashion, celebrities and current events! I especially love to spend time with my family, friends and my dogs! I enjoy being active and staying in shape, that could include being active outdoors, going to the gym or attending a yoga class! I absolutely love to travel and aspire to visit many more places around the globe, hopefully in the very near future!

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I danced for over 12 years between the ages of 5 to 17! The different genres of dance consisted of jazz, modern creative and hip hop! I stopped dancing just before I graduated but it’s something I would love to start doing again! I think dance is a great way to express yourself and such a fun workout all at the same time!

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Throughout high school I participated in Basketball and Indoor Soccer! I’m a very independent individual, I work extremely well in group settings, whoever I’ve never been really big into doing sports myself but I still love doing physical fitness, including walking my dogs, being active outdoors, working out at the gym, or doing yoga!!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I feel strongly about this question, besides the support and amazing upbringing from my parents I’d have to say the media has always had a huge influence in my life. It’s funny to think that because of the location I live in that it would affect me. As a matter of fact I always looked up to Paris Hilton which may seem juvenile but she’s a brand, she’s a successful business woman and she never let the media ruin or establish who she was as a person. She embraced herself for who she was and even when things that were out of her control happened, she still stood up for what she believed in and that can be hard being in the public eye!

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

By far my proudest accomplishment other than participating in Miss Universe Canada has to be a couple months ago when I purchased my very first townhouse!! It was a big step for me to have my first mortgage by I’m very proud of myself that I was able to do it!!

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I would have to say I think the most unique or interesting thing that has ever happened to me is a compilation of all my memorable experiences of all the amazing locations I have travelled! Everywhere I go if it’s Skagway, Alaska, The Bahamas or Thailand I’ve always met such amazing people and I’m thankful for all those experiences. I love learning about new cultures, trying new things and seeing new and interesting places in the world! There’s something so exciting about visiting a new place and I want to continue to add to my list!! The world’s wonders are endless and I hope to get to live much more that it has to offer!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My ambition is to have a career that I love, one that makes everyday a new and exciting challenge where I can meet new people and learn new things! I’m very open to having a career where I could be travelling all the time! I would definitely describe myself as a people person!

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I’ve always dreamed of being a Victoria’s Secret model, as silly as that may be I think that life of travelling and luxury would be so amazing! I feel any job that I could work with people and travel all over the place would be so fantastic! That’s also why I feel that competing for the role of Miss Universe Canada would be beyond anything I could imagine and a definite dream job for me as well!

Are you currently a student?

Not at the moment, but I plan to further my education in the near future!

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I’m currently working permanently for the Yukon Government as an Office and Administrative Assistant. I work for the Deputy Minister in the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I’ve been working there for approximately 4 years!

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon! Our community and capital city of the Yukon has a population of about 25,000 people is small yet still has a lot to offer! A ton of hiking trails and lakes surround what’s known as the Wilderness City, as well as the Yukon River which flows right through town! Visitors are often surprised to learn that Whitehorse has pretty much all the amenities and comforts of a big city! My childhood was memorable, I’m very close with my parents Buster and Cheryl and sister, Kelly! I’m very blessed to have a family that’s always shown me unconditional love, support and acceptance! We’ve always spent lots of time together as a family; walking our dogs, visiting our cottage on Tagish Lake for a weekend getaway! We also travel outside of the Yukon to hot destinations or to visit family in British Columbia or Ontario. Growing up in the Yukon has taught me the values and skills which made me the person I am today, and of course I have my parents to thank for my upbringing! My parents have always been very supportive with everything that I do and they continue to do that even though I’m out on my own!

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I would say my most interesting job was back in high school over the summer time I worked at a fairly new tourist attraction in the Yukon. It’s called the Yukon Suspension Bridge at the Tutshi Canyon which is located on the Klondike Highway, just a few miles north of the White Pass summit. It brings tons of tourists from all over the globe, it’s a short drive to Skagway, Alaska so people who dock in Skagway on the cruise ships would take day trips up to the bridge!! It was such a great experience, I got to meet so many people and see lots of wildlife! Bears, and Moose are just something of the norm up here!

List any volunteering you have done.

Back in high school I did volunteering for the Salvation Army at the soup kitchen, and I’ve always tried to donate my clothing, etc to the less fortunate! Throughout high school as a student we did lots of fundraising for different events such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. I’ve recently spoke with the President of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, which is part of the Humane Society in the Yukon. I’ve arranged to volunteer some of my time to helping with the animals at the shelter! I will be starting to volunteer beginning in March. J

What is your most unusual talent?

This question was the most difficult one for me, for the life of me I could not think of an unusual talent that I have! I don’t see this as unusual talent but maybe a trait in my personality but lots of people that I meet always say they feel safe in my surroundings, I make them comfortable and they put trust in me. I truly care for each and every person in my life and even people I haven’t met yet. I’ve always had just a general caring sweet nature and I think that’s why I can call so many people my friends and so many more to come. J

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have ever been to has to be Thailand! I travelled there for an entire month in 2007 and visited lots beautiful and interesting places in Krabi, Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Tao, Ko Pha-Ngan and Bangkok! The culture there is so interesting, the food was fantastic, the beaches were paradise and the people were always very kind, warm and welcoming! It was a huge eye opener; I will never take for granted the amazing opportunities we have in Canada and truly how lucky we really are!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years from now I will be 35 years old! I hope by then I will be pursuing all my dreams and working in a career that I love! I truly feel that Miss Universe Canada will open many doors for me and at the very least this will be such a memorable experience where I will learn so many new things and meet many fabulous people; I seriously can’t wait! I want to travel as much as I can; I see myself getting married and having children in the future, but furthering my education and establishing a career is more important at this point in my life!

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I think that you touched on many essential and important aspects of my life! The only thing I want to add is how thankful I am to have been chosen for this Pageant! I’m confident in saying that I will be a great representative from the Yukon Territory!!! The first ever delegate which is such a huge accomplishment for me!
