Chelsea Bird - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Chelsea Bird

Chelsea Bird | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 23

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Edmonton

BIO: Chelsea Bird is a motivated and driven young woman and a born communicator. She is studying radio and television broadcasting at NAIT in Edmonton and can’t wait to put the skills she has learned to use as a news anchor or possibly radio announcer.

She was elected onto the NAIT Student Senate, and is seen as a leader for other students.

Chelsea sees the world with a unique perspective, which helps her tremendously when delivering her two radio shows that she hosts. Chelsea feeds off the energy of others, loves meeting new people, and will do anything to make someone laugh.

Her light-hearted personality and sense of humor are her best qualities.

After moving to Edmonton from Saskatoon, Chelsea originally wanted to study drama and pursue a career in the arts. However, after travelling abroad on her own and discovering her true desires in life, she came to the realization that she would rather communicate with people via reporting.

Chelsea is working towards using her love of theatre and drama to teach children how to command the stage, and reap the benefits that stage acting can give.

Chelsea is a very community-minded individual and is someone who always sets her goals bigger and bigger in order to achieve a rich and fulfilling life. She has travelled to Thailand, Europe and the United States and hopes to see much more of the world in order for her to see and help other cultures that are not as fortunate as Canadians.

Chelsea believes strongly that everyone is entitled to live a full life and has volunteered for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada by canvassing, has provided school supplies to children while in Thailand, and after going on a 3 month exchange to Germany, has spoken to students about the wonderful opportunities that students can gain by travelling.

Chelsea is a passionate individual that is continuously captivated by human nature. A rich and rewarding career as a respected broadcaster will complement her personality, and act as a platform to advocate for charities and causes closest to her heart. Chelsea feels that representing Canada at the international level would be a wonderful opportunity to work with communities less fortunate than ours that greatly need support and resources. The ability to represent Canada is a responsibility and a privilege and Chelsea feels remarkably fortunate to have such a wonderful opportunity.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love meeting new people and seeing what makes them unique. I see the world with a fresh perspective, which helps me greatly with the two radio shows that I host at NAIT, and blog that I write. I also love yoga and keeping my body healthy and fit.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I took hip-hop and jazz dance lessons while I was in high school and took ballet while on an exchange to Germany. I was a member of my high school’s first ever pom squad, and studied Drama at the University of Saskatchewan for 2 years.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I have been active all my life, and from a young age grew up playing basketball, volleyball, competing in track and field and did gymnastics for 9 years.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My sister has had the strongest influence on me. She is an admirably dedicated and hard working person, and has always managed to achieve success through any challenge she may have had to face. She has, and always will be my biggest role model.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Both times I travelled abroad completely by myself. I learned so much, not only about myself, but about the world and other diverse cultures, and how fortunate I am to be Canadian. I truly gained an appreciation for what it means to be independent, and what an important and enriching life lesson travelling can be.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I will try anything once- so far that has taken me abroad by myself twice, skydiving, bungee jumping and I have even ended up fracturing my skull in the process!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I am currently studying at NAIT in the radio and television program, striving towards a career as a broadcaster. Ideally my career will take me into both radio and television at some point, as I love and respect both mediums.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

To be a news anchor/reporter for a media company that is relevant, trustworthy and respected. It’s important for me to be a trustworthy source for people, as I would use my abilities to help promote charities and causes.

Are you currently a student?

If yes, where?

Area of study:

Radio and Television broadcasting

Are you currently employed?

If yes, what is your occupation?

I work for CINCO Interactive, an agency that specializes in Digital and Sponsorship. I am currently managing several active projects the likes of Ford’s Sponsorship for the Edmonton Oilers. Part of my job is managing an experiential marketing team, attending every game and interact directly with fans. Oilers fans are so true to their team, it’s impossible not to leave feeling energized. I’m also the Western Canada Project leader for the very successful experiential and social media campaign for new Ford Escape 2013. Working in different cities has many challenges, but I welcome the opportunity to rise above them.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with my sister and my parents. My favorite time of year is the summer, and we would always travel to the mountains, head to the family farm or enjoy one of the beautiful Saskatchewan lakes. I grew up very active, playing a lot of sports, which has incorporated fitness as a big part of my life today.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I was a paid actor in a children’s play. It was very interactive, and was so fun to see the kids’ reactions, and so rewarding to see their excitement.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have canvassed for the Multiple Sclerosis society of Canada, have acted as a tour guide at NAIT and have supplied toys and school supplies to a school in Thailand while travelling there.

What is your most unusual talent?

I can personify many different goofy voices-which come in very handy for voicing radio commercials at school and entertaining children!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Thailand has been the most interesting place that I have been lucky enough to experience. The people are so warm and hospitable. Seeing a way of life so vastly different from ours in Canada gave me great perspective on life. I would love to travel there again in the future on a volunteering basis to try to give back to such a wonderful culture that-in some areas is devastatingly poverty stricken.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I hope to own my own home and have a successful career as a news anchor. I strive to be seen as a trusted and respected source of information for my community and am diligently striving towards that goal. I also hope that I am fortunate enough to incorporate travel into my life, and hope to be able to volunteer abroad in wherever country I’m able to help. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of others, and to do that would mean that I have been successful.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I am proud and honored to be part of Miss Universe Canada and to have the opportunity to represent Canada at a National level.
