ABS-CBN is Bidding to Get Miss Universe Franchise from Bb. Pilipinas

Following the poor performance of the Philippines in the Miss Universe Pageant since 2000, there are reports that ABS-CBN is bidding to get the franchise from Miss Universe Organization to be the country’s national director who will get to choose and send delegates to the most prestigious beauty contest in the world.

Many pageant enthusiasts are criticizing the way Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) as headed by Stella Marquez Araneta is handling the Philippine representative to the Miss Universe Pageant. One controversial issue that they are pointing out is that BPCI is importing gowns from Araneta’s native country Colombia from the designer Alfredo Barraza (who is also a close friend of Araneta).

Pageant experts lamented that the gowns being sent to the Philippines looked like it was “recycled” from other designs. Furthermore, we have local designers who are equally good or maybe better than Colombian designers. (In photo, Bb. Pilipinas - Universe: (left-right) 2004 Maricar Balagtas, 2006 Lia Andrea Ramos, 2001 Zorayda Ruth Andam)

Since 2000, the Philippines did not make the cut of Miss Universe, just ambushing the Miss Photogenic Awards in 2005 to 2007. Their setback is not the swimsuit competition nor the question and answer portion. The experts are pointing their fingers on the evening gown.

With the reports that ABS-CBN is bidding for the franchise of Miss Universe Pageant, there could be hope for our beauty queens to finally place or even win the third Miss Universe crown for the country.

BPCI’s contract as Philippine Miss Universe franchise holder is not due until 2013 but this early, ABS-CBN is positioning to bid for the rights to be the official holder of the right to search and organize the Philippines’ bet for Miss Universe from 2014 and beyond.

ABS-CBN has been the official broadcaster of Miss Universe in 1994 when it was held in the country and in 2007 and 2008. It’s newly appointed ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio was once a national beauty queen in the ’70s.

Dayana Mendoza: Life After Being Crowned as Miss Universe

Few moments after being crowned as the new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela worked immediately and has been very busy doing numerous fashion shoots, press interviews, guesting, dinner parties, and a lot more. Life as a Miss Universe is not all that glamour as she is entitled to be the spokesperson for AIDS/HIV awareness and to become a role model.

"What touched me most is that I will have the opportunity to turn the world in one year... and most specially is that we will work with AIDS throughout the world, trying to grow much more women and, I being Latina, Latina women of course."

Dayana Mendoza was interviewed last July 21 in New York City. Unlike most of the contestants, who made a name for participating and look for new horizons, Dayana Mendoza put aside a promising career as a model for venturing into the demanding Miss Venezuela contest, a prelude to his coronation.

"I had from 15 years working as a model, traveling in different countries around the world, but I wanted to do something as more personal," she explained. "The model sells more of a clothing brand, a product, the Miss Universe has the opportunity to have contact with people, able to interact and show his personality and also felt that that was what he needed. And all I was so good" she added with a smile sincere, almost indelible.

Dayana is the bring home 5th Miss Universe Crown to Venezuela conquering the highest scepter of the international beauty pageant. She had never participated in a competition like this before enlist the Miss Venezuela Contest. The entire experience, she said, "has been a shock."

"Even as I am not your feet on earth. I like that floating in the excitement. The truth is that crowned Miss Universe after 12 years has been ... I would love to have seen my country for a little hole at the time they were crowning me!" the new beauty queen explained.

Her triumph follows the fourth title holder Alicia Machado, a Venezuelan who won the title in 1996 and around which an entire controversy arose because shortly after he had won some pounds.

Dayana says, "I do not know what is the diet of Miss Venezuela, because I have the fortune of not having made any... The truth that I have a metabolism accelerated. Thanks to God, thanks to my mother who inherited it from me. Everyone has a different metabolism."

Asked what beauty tips she can best ever give is take a lot of water, go to the gym and eating healthy.

-- And what do you think of aesthetic surgery? Which they say are common in the competition in your country? "Plastic surgery seems to me that is their own decision. The problem is when you start having surgeries seem to someone else," she responds seriously.

Mendoza, who will go for the first time more than six months away from home, will live next year in an apartment in New York City together with Miss Teen USA, Hilary Cross, and Miss USA, Crystle Stewart.

"Miss USA was one of the candidates with which I could have more contact and I love to share a room with it right now ... We became one family, one months we were together and we are sincere, we are honest."

-- On your own involvement of final coronation night, when you did more than dance and dance behind the scenes. Have you knew you were going to win?

"Yes what I felt in an instant," she confessed, "but I said, 'Dayana, if not pass that recalls the fun, you were in Vietnam, enjoying the culture of 80 different beautiful women ... and that already come this far, you are already a winner".

-- What are you thinking when you and Miss Colombia, Taliana Vargas are the only delegates left and in the final two?

"For me we are Colombia and Venezuela (nations) are sisters. I want my sister, my sister I lent her my shampoo, I laugh with her and sometimes fought, but I want and it is always be my sister."

As one of her passion is interior designing, Mendoza already requested permission to remodel the apartment and said she want to study art because it "is something that I was becoming crazy."

"I will swear! When I came to any room and I'm changing the colour of the walls and I'm changing the location of sofas, I'm changing everything." Dayana said.

In her country, where everyone is organizing a big welcome party. She will travel in September to hand over her crown as Miss Venezuela, said that outweighs the universal.

-- What's your plans after your reign as Miss Universe ends next year?

"It's that I want to do as many things as Oscar Wilde said, 'defined to oneself is limited to oneself.' That's why little by little I will see what God showed me the way I will go and choosing."

Miss USA Crystle Stewart talks about her fall at Miss Universe

From the recently held Miss Universe 2008 Beauty Pageant at Nha Trang, Vietnam last July 13, Miss USA Crystle Stewart falls on stage during the Top 10 Evening Gown Competition. And what a coincidence because last year's Miss USA Rachel Smith also falls on stage during the same segment. Crystle told in interview that it's just a coincidence that Miss USA falls on stage back to back at Miss Universe. She said that in her case, the bottom of the gown got up under her shoes, but she recovered immediately and clapped.

Rachel Smith placed 4th runner-up in Miss Universe 2007 Beauty Pageant last year in Mexico while Crystle Stewart placed at the top 10 this year. When asked what advice will she give to the next Miss USA, she just told to put grips on her shoes.

Part 2: Miss Universe 2008 Review

The second round is the top 10 Evening Gown Competition. Again, the girls that stand out were Miss Venezuela, Miss Colombia, Miss Mexico and Miss Russia which gown reminds a lot of the gown wore by the dethroned Miss Universe 2002 from Russia Oxana Federova. Note that Miss USA falls on the stage, same as last year's Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith. Miss Australia is one of the most stunning ladies that night but her evening gown didn't gave her much justice. She didn't carry the gown well. Miss Kosovo did well on this round but it didn't make her advance on the next round.

After the Evening Gown Competition, the 5 finalists were announced (ranked):

Top 5:
1)Miss Colombia- 9.829
2)Miss Venezuela-9.697
3)Miss Mexico-9.429
4)Miss Dominican Republic-9.036
5)Miss Russia-8.471

Rest of Top 10:
6)Miss Kosovo-8.264
7)Miss Spain-8.200
8)Miss USA-8.050

10)Miss Australia-7.557

The 5 finalist were down to the final round which is the interview competition. The delegates were asked to pick a name of the judge that will have the chance to ask their final question.

Miss Mexico struggled answering the final question, while Miss Russia's answer was a little bit boring, Miss Dominican Republic and Miss Colombia did a good job. And Miss Venezuela answered great and shown her bubbly personality.

After the final question and the last look at the top 5, the reigning Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori of Japan take her traditional final walk. It's the first time that a Miss Universe make her final walk not wearing a evening gown. Then the crowning of the new Miss Universe was done.

Highlights of Miss Universe 2008 Preliminaries Part 1

Miss Universe 2008 Preliminary Competition was held last July 8 at the Crown Convention Center Nha Trang, Vietnam. The 80 delegates competed in swimsuits and evening gowns and judged by a celebrity panel of judges.

After viewing the whole competition, there's 6 ladies that really stood out and got the most cheer from the crowd: Miss Mexico, Miss Venezuela, Miss Colombia, Miss Thailand, Miss Panama and most surprised to Miss Brazil, although she didn't register beauty to photograph that much, she was one of the best catwalk skills that night and has just the right moves on stage.

Video of Miss Brazil during the swimsuit and evening gown:

But clearly, the toughest battle is between Miss Venezuela and Miss Mexico. Both ladies got that perfect curves, both looking glamorous at their evening gowns. And both have strong personality and model-like catwalk skills. They simply confirmed why they've been on the top of every betting list for weeks now.

Videos of Miss Venezuela during swimsuit and evening gown:

Videos of Miss Mexico during swimsuit and evening gown:

Not forgetting to the battle of the fierce is Miss Colombia. She got the almost perfect body figure, plus a nice choice of pageant dress. Her catwalk is also what made her one of the favorites that night.

Many people have expected that the famous Ingrid Marie Rivera, Miss Puerto Rico will do great. Yes she did good, but not as expected. She lost points during the swimsuit competition, her lower body portion is not proportional to her upper body. And in the evening gown portion, she did better catwalk and nice choice of pageant dress. But it's Puerto Rico, and it's Ingrid, so you never know! At this point she could not even place among the semi-finalists, or she could go all the way and become her island's 6th Miss Universe crown.

Another lady that's expected to do great which she does is Miss USA. She did good but she was outshined by the other delegates. But Crystle look fierce in the swimsuit and very regal and sophisticated in her evening gown. It's a nice choice for her that she make her hair up in the evening gown competition. It will be no surprise if she enter the semi-finals next week.

On European delegates, their front-runners is Miss Spain and Miss Norway. Miss Spain is good on catwalk. While Miss Norway looks stunning, fresh and natural, but minus for her choice of evening gown. She should have chosen better gown to add for her chances. But both of them deserves to be on the semi-finals.

Watch videos of Miss Spain and Miss Norway:

Miss South Africa is the one to beat and the stood out from the African region, this girl has a lot of spunk and has a great personality on stage. Plus the fact that she looks stunning and regal that night.

Clearly, the crowd's favorite from Asia is Miss Korea and Miss Thailand. Both looks natural, fresh and stunning. Good choice for evening gowns. Although Miss Korea got more catwalk skills than Miss Thailand, but thaiand got an amazing body and towering height. And both of them deserves a slot in the semi-finals.

Who among these early favorites will enter the semi-finals? And who among the rest of the 80 delegates will enter and maybe bring home the crown? Find out on the live telecast on July 14 on NBC.
