Throughout high school Sarah has been an avid member of Student Government and Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association.

Once in post-secondary school, Sarah was elected Vice President of her college’s Student Association and was in charge of Student Activities (varsity sports, intramural sports, social events, charity events).

Health and fitness have always been very important to Sarah. For years she was a swim coach while also competing in swim team, volleyball, basketball, track & field, softball and rugby. After high school she played for the Nova Scotia Women’s U19 Rugby Team at Eastern Nationals, later playing varsity for Saint Mary’s University. She is currently a sponsored athlete, competing in the bikini category of the NSABBA/CBBF and WBFF for the first time this year.

While in university and taking the course Small Business Management, Sarah decided to combine the theory education with practical experience so she started her own business at the age of 22. Her event management company was successful for the year of operation and Sarah had the honour of working events with Kevin O’Leary, Danny Glover and with fantastic companies such as DSM Telecom and Apeeling Orange.

Sarah is also a professional model and actress signed with City Models Talent Agency. This tall and curvaceous Canadian first started to gain recognition after doing a national ad campaign for Moosehead, when she was voted “Halifax’s Favourite Model” in Faces Magazine’s “Choice Awards” (reader’s poll). Since then, Sarah has modeled/acted in projects such as Atlantic Fashion Week, Halifax Shopping Centre’s billboard campaign, CTV Olympics commercial and many more.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English (some French and a little Spanish but not fluent in either)

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I have a passion for travel, fashion, fitness, and philanthropy. They each represent a part of me and I believe balance of femininity and ferocity is important. I volunteer my time to any worthy organization and try to convey a strong healthy example for the youth of today. I have competed in many sports throughout my education both individually and on varsity teams, and recently I mostly play volleyball in community leagues. I enjoy riding horses equestrian and have a love of animals. I’m interested in the arts and love acting, modelling and photography. My greatest passion is travelling and I’ve been lucky to travel throughout my entire life with my multi-cultural family. I have had the great pleasure of spending time allover Canada, USA, Belize, England and Scotland.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

Outdoor survival (winter outdoor overnight course), equestrian horseback riding, volleyball, swimming, rugby, track & field, dance (ballet in elementary, hip hop/contemporary performance group in middle school, and belly dancing in high school), formal dining etiquette, cigar training, formal wine training (trained by Canada’s Master Sommelier, John Szabo), culinary training, and more.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I played sports through out my entire education and continue to be active in my adult life. I’ve competed in swimming, volleyball, rugby, basketball, track & field, softball, equestrian, and more.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

One of the places that I had lived the longest was Greenwood, Nova Scotia where my sister and I worked as lifeguards. We both joined the swim team and competed at the provincial and national level. For four years, I swam for the Greenwood Dolphins Swim Team and I coached the Future League for the later two years after receiving my national certification. My Head Coach, Sherri Deustch was like a second mother to my sister and I; She was a huge influence in my life, as a coach, as a teacher and as a friend. She taught me drive and motivation, both for myself and for my team. Sherri mentored me as an athlete and a coach, and she helped me grow into a mature, responsible adult with compassion and determination.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

I have many things in my life that I am proud of and it’s hard to say one is a more important accomplishment than another. I am proud of my education. I am proud of leading and representing my schools as Vice President, Minister of NSSSA and Class Representative. I am proud of the accomplishments of younger athletes that I have coached. I am proud of my modeling publications in magazines and on billboards. Ultimately, I am proud of my balance in my mind, body and spirit. My parents did well to raised me as a well-rounded individual and I’m constantly striving to improve myself – When you are your best self, you can help others the most.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

One of the most interesting things that I’ve done would have to be going to Central America for International Development work. Belize is one of the most beautiful and humble countries I’ve ever been to and it changed me as a person. I was hosted by a Mayan community where they had no running water, no electricity, and they sustained their village from the [small amount of] food they are able harvest. To spend time with someone who has so little, and yet has so much pride and is happy to give so much generosity – it really enlightens your perspective on the world. It brought warmth to my heart to see the happiness we provided for them.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I have a number of career ambitions; I love modeling and acting and I’m going to enjoy this as far as it takes me and try to positively influence the industry, but I also have a love of the tourism and hospitality industry and I would love to eventually have a socially responsible and ecologically sustainable health resort, where people can get away to relax and educate themselves on bettering their lives whether they’re participating in the physical activities, healthy cooking classes or other activities I’ve yet to think of!

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I want to inspire and help others. Whether it’s through art or health, I want to motivate others to “reach up”. As Nelson Mandela said “as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give others permission to do the same”. Rather than trying to be better than each other, if every person just tried to be a better version of them self, this world would be a much more beautiful and successful place. Becoming Miss Universe would be my dream job because it would help me reach a broader audience with my positive ambitions.

Are you currently a student?

Yes

If yes, where?

MSVU

Area of study:

I graduated with a college diploma and now am in the university half of a 2 + 2 articulation agreement. After two years of college I started my third year of a Tourism Management Degree. I study in university part-time while pursuing life experience with my current level of education.

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I am a model and actress signed with City Models.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I grew up in a military family; most of the men in my family are pilots and my father was no exception as a helicopter pilot for the Canadian Military’s Search and Rescue force. We were posted often and I travelled allover Canada and the UK. My father is British of mixed ethnicity and I am Scottish on my mother’s side, so I have my dual-citizenship with a UK passport.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I started my own event management company at the age of 22 while studying Small Business Management at MSVU and have had the honour of working events with Kevin O’Leary, Danny Glover and amazing charity organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society. Another interesting job I’ve had was working with international development groups in Central American; I worked with a number of organizations such as Toledo Institute for Development and Education, and Sustainable Harvest in Belize.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have volunteered in numerous fundraisers such as fashion shows, concerts, sporting events, workshops and even car washes for organizations such as Canadian Cancer Society, Adsum House, Parkinson Society Canada, Parker Street Foundation, Youth Project, Children’s Wish, Canadian Diabetes, Lung Association, Hurricane Katrina Relief, Shinerama / Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and more.

What is your most unusual talent?

Most of my talents are “usual” like athletics. If I were to think was my most unusual talent might be that I’m very intuitive. My family and friends say that I can read them like a book and I’m inclined to agree. I can usually tell when someone’s hiding something like sadness or frustration. Often I can even decipher where they’ve been or what they’ve been up to.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I have had the pleasure of being in some amazing countries; the most interesting perhaps are Belize, Turks and Caicos, Scotland and England. I loved the architecture (especially castles) and history of Europe, and I loved the beauty and warmth (of climate and culture) of Central America.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I hope to be my own brand and inspire people to be healthy and active. I also hope to be running my own business with a percent of profits going to World Conservation Union.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I think you did a great job of providing thought provoking questions and thank you for this opportunity. I feel that all of my previous answers explain me well as a candidate and I look forward to what comes next!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My older brother has had the biggest influence on my life because he has always been there to guide me through hard times and he continues to teach me how to cope with the different challenges that life presents. I’ll always remember learning to swim for the first time, my brother pushed me into a swimming pool and told me that the only choice I had was to sink or swim. Even though it wasn’t a pleasant experience at the time, it taught me how to be brave and overcome my fears in order to achieve anything in life.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

As a child, my mother advised me that one of the most important things a woman can do is to become independent. I took this advice to heart and made it a priority in my life. Since my first job at age 10 delivering newspapers, I have never had to ask my parents for financial assistance. Fortunately, my success in the acting business allowed me to buy my first home and decorate it with my own personal style. Buying my own house gave me complete independence and it remains one of my proudest personal accomplishments.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing I have experienced happened while vacationing in Thailand in 2005, when I got the chance to see Natalie Glebova win the title of Miss Universe. I am fortunate to be able to work in the field I am passionate about as an actor. My career ambition is to one day win a Best Actress Award for my film work. I also continue to hone my craft by attending acting workshops and observing other actors that I admire. I would love the opportunity to work with both of my mentors and idols: academy award nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and renowned Iranian film director Bahman Ghobadi. I believe my hard work and dedication to always strive to improve as an actor will help me achieve my career goal!

My dream job would be any job that makes me happy and provides me with the opportunity to inspire others. At this moment, I would love the position of “Miss Universe Canada”. Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

My childhood was very unique. I was born in India, raised in Iran, and now living in Canada. India was very special because of its culture and spirituality. In Iran, I learned about the values of family, tradition and non-material pleasures. I was very fortunate as a child because my father built an empire which afforded us financial freedom. However, my father chose to escape Iran’s oppressive regime, so he sacrificed his successful company and moved us to Canada. Though we had less wealth, it was in Canada that I learned the biggest joys in life are not material things, but rather the time and memories that I share with the people I love.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

List any volunteering you have done.

Various Student films

BC Organ Donor society

Varieties Children Charity fashion show

Providing care, shelter and food for the homeless people in Downtown East Side.

What is your most unusual talent?

I can do an uncanny impersonation of my mother at any given time.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Thailand. I got the chance to experience the country’s spectacular natural beauty, and I gained an understanding of its poverty and its people. My best memory of Thailand’s nature was when I kayaked through the exotic jungles of Krabi. While paddling down the river, hundreds of monkeys suddenly greeted me with loud shrieks and swam beside my kayak. They stayed with me as I made my way to my destination, the gorgeous “wat tham sue” caves. Although that experience was wonderful, the one I cherish most is my time volunteering at a Bangkok orphanage. Despite that most of the children there were from abusive or severely impoverished families, their smiles and attitudes were brighter than any others I have ever encountered. They taught me a valuable lesson about the power of the human spirit.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In my career, I hope to be a steadily working and well-respected film actor. I hope to have achieved a reputation and recognition level that allows me to reach many people with my work. I really believe that each of us is blessed in life and that we all must use this blessing to advance humanity in any way that we can.

In my personal life, I have a goal of seeing all Seven Wonders of the World by the age of 30. I have already been to the Great Wall of China; the Taj Mahal in India; the Roman Colosseum in Italy; and Chichen itza in Mexico, so I only have three more to go! I would also like to someday be able to play a classical song on the piano and win a Best Actress award for my film work. Finally, but most importantly, I want to be a loving mother and great role model for my children in the same way that my mother always was for me.

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Mina Khtaria

Mina Khtaria | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 21

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Surrey

BIO: Mina grew up in the small town of Port Alberni, BC as a first generation Indo-Canadian. Being exposed to the diversity within Canada Mina developed an interest for other cultures, societies, and people from all around the world.

This interest has lead her to complete her Degree in Sociology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Living in the Vancouver area, Mina is naturally a huge Canucks fan and can be found on game nights cheering on her team.

In keeping with her love of an active life style Mina enjoys baking, zumba, yoga, volunteering, travelling, and dining out.

Of all things Mina enjoys doing, volunteering is one of her favourites. She finds it very important to give back to her community and does this by regularly raising money for different charities.

She especially loves to work with children.

This past year, mina accomplished a life long goal by travelling oversees to volunteer in an orphanage and teach English.

In what sports, if any, have you participated

Cheerleading, Softball, Tae kwon do,

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

The person who has had the most influence on me was a professor I had at Kwantlen. I was inspired by his positive worldview, and his emphasis on finding one’s own path in life. He inspired me to challenge my limitations and pursue my goals.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment would be making the decision to volunteer abroad. Going to Ghana to work in an orphanage and teach English was by far the best experience I have had in life. To travel oversees and work with children in need had always been a dream of mine and to be able to accomplish this goal was very fulfilling.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

One of the most interesting things that have happened to me was a case of mistaken identity. During my travels in Western Africa, I was often stopped by locals who thought I was a Bollywood actress. I suppose not many people of Indian decent travel to this part of the world and so their greatest exposure to the culture was through TV and film. I thought it was quite cute!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

While many people would feel confused or lost without a career path laid out before them, I am excited by the endless opportunities yet to come. If I were asked tomorrow to be a model, a pastry chef, a politician, a volunteer, or a teacher I would jump at any of those opportunities and would see where life took me.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would be to have my own cooking/baking television show. I would love to bake for people and share my passion. As a child I would always cook in my kitchen while pretending to speak to a live audience.

Yes at Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Area of study:

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

As a first generation Indo-Canadian my heritage played a very important role in the way I was raised. I grew up in a bilingual home learning both English and Punjabi. By learning about my culture I developed a unique perspective on life. Growing up in the small town of Port Alberni, BC I found myself living the best of both worlds. I got to be a regular Canadian kid at school while having a more traditional life at home. Furthermore, I loved the sense of community that comes from always knowing your neighbors and having my friends close by.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

In my grade 12 year, I worked at a cucumber farm packaging and boxing cucumbers for 30 days.

List any volunteering you have done.

Volunteered in Ghana for 4 months in an orphanage and teaching English.
Surrey Food Bank
British Columbia Youth Parliament
BC Summer Games
BC Winter Games
Port Alberni Parks and Recreation- Children’s Day Camps
Port Alberni Senior Centre
Cancer Relay for Life
Raised funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
Raised funds for the Canadian Kidney Foundation
Raised funds for the Terry Fox Foundation
Raised funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation
Raised funds for Cops for Cancer
Raised funds for World Vision

What is your most unusual talent?

An unusual talent I have is being really good at directions! No matter my circumstances I can always figure my way around.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have been to would be Amsterdam. Being a sociology major I enjoy learning about other cultures and I found the Dutch culture to be very full of life. I especially found Amsterdam interesting because they have more bicycles there than people!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be living life to the fullest and enjoying wherever life has taken me. I would like to be well traveled, having seen and done things all over the world that most people only dream about doing. Marta Jablonska - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Marta Jablonska

Marta Jablonska | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 24

Height: 5'10"

Hometown: Hamilton

BIO: Always on the quest for new adventures, Marta Jablonska is a passionate young woman whose self-confidence and curious nature lead her to live life to the fullest and never say no to an opportunity.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Marta came to Canada at the age of 6. Not understanding a word of English and having to learn the language quickly was the first challenge that inspired Marta to cultivate a profound interest for different cultures and languages.

Marta is now fluent in Polish, English & French and is learning Spanish.

After secondary school, Marta moved to Montreal to attend McGill University. This allowed Marta to explore more of Canada’s cultural diversity and immerse herself in the francophone setting.

Gifted with a creative, energetic and charismatic personality, Marta was also chosen to teach an undergraduate course as part of a special program at McGill.

Determined to keep expanding her horizons and to discover more of what the world has to offer, Marta recently embarked on a journey around the world, visiting New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Beijing, Barbados and various parts of North America over the past year. Nothing makes Marta happier than learning about new customs, foods and landmarks, while mixing with locals and exploring nature’s beauty.

Traveling has also exposed Marta to poverty and hardships in under-developed parts of the world. As a first-hand witness while volunteering in Argentina, Marta realizes the importance of a good support system for children. Being inspired by “Club Union de los Pibes,” an after-school program for children with difficult home lives, Marta is in the process of starting her own Sunny Sundays Project for Canadian children with similar situations. She is excited about spearheading the first annual Dine & Dance for SOS fundraising gala this year as well. Marta’s caring nature and exceptional entrepreneurial aptitude are qualities that will not only drive these projects to completion but set them up for success in the future.

Being ambitious, Marta does not only aspire to have a fulfilling personal life but excels in the professional and academic setting as well. She is currently working in Marketing while completing her MBA part-time. As a fervent believer in education, Marta’s future plan is to complete a PhD and become a Professor. Finally, she is looking to find ways to help others transform their lives for the better and is a Certified Holistic Health Counsellor from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.

Marta loves to laugh, be in the sun and do anything active outdoors. She also loves going to the movies, rock climbing, exploring extreme sports and playing word games with her friends. Her mantra for life includes “Do the unexpected,” and “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage,” which will continue to guide her as she embarks on her next adventure to become Miss Universe Canada. If Marta is selected to represent her country, she will do so with pride and grace, in the same way she approaches every aspect of her life- by giving the opportunity 110%.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

Polish, French (beginner Spanish)

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love being in the sun, doing anything active outdoors and making every day an adventure. I also enjoy playing word games with friends, going to the movies, laughing and dancing. I love extreme sports, learning about other cultures, exploring new parts of the world and meeting people from all walks of life.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I played Volleyball and Basketball during elementary school and the beginning of high school. I have taken tennis lessons and participated in cross-country meets. I also received an international Sailing license as a teenager in Poland. I currently run, rock climb, participate in a fitness bootcamp, surf and swim.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

The person who has single-handedly had the most influence on my life is somewhat of a fairy godmother- my mentor and university sponsor. When I was in high school, I was the president of my student council. As the student voice, I sat in at board meetings for Cathedral Student Enterprises, where I first met my mentor. As a successful businessman and entrepreneur, he was well aware of my dreams of going to McGill, an internationally recognized institution, and studying commerce in a place where I could practice my French. At the time, however, my dream was out of reach. I was not in a financial position to afford attending school out-of-province, not to mention the costs of living in Montreal. Although it was an anonymous sponsorship that eventually financed my 4 years of undergraduate education, I believe it was the now-87 year old mentor who changed my life. Each year, several times a year, my sponsor has also arranged for a group of key individuals from the school board and business worlds to come together to review my goals, plans, successes thus far and aspirations. They have provided me with unparalleled support and guidance over the past 6 years. I will forever be indebted to this group, who not only changed my life professionally and academically, but personally as well as I have been fortunate enough to receive critical life advice from them. The unparalleled act of kindness and selfless generosity renewed my faith in the good in people. I cannot explain in words the gratitude I feel for the surreal shift that was created in my world, nor can I fully explain the ripple effect that it has had on the rest of my life. Nonetheless, I will forever feel humbled and blessed because of the influence my sponsor has had on me. Furthermore, I have committed to someday provide a deserving student from my inner-city high school with the same privilege I was awarded; a first step towards creating a scholarship fund in my sponsor’s honour. My mentor continues to support my every endeavour to this day and is very excited about my participation in Miss Universe Canada.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment has been creating my own path in life. Whether adapting to a new country where I first did not speak either official language, or moving to another province for school, or traveling around the world on my own, I continuously strive to not let my own fear and perceived shortcomings stop me from living the life I was meant to live. All the while, I have succeeded in keeping my personal values intact such as being respectful and kind to everyone I meet. I am proud that I have done one thing each day that scares me.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

3 things come to mind:

On my last big trip, I managed to just miss the earthquakes in New Zealand, flooding in southern Thailand and radioactive rain in South Korea…. all by just a couple of days. Someone was clearly watching over me.
I’m fearless enough to ride an elephant in Thailand, run off a cliff in New Zealand or jump out of a plane in Quebec…. and somehow driving a go kart on my own intimidates me.
I strive to be an eternal optimist, never back down from an opportunity and continue to dream the way I did as a child- ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

No matter what my future may bring, I aspire to share my passion for public speaking and fervent belief in education. I am currently working towards my MBA part-time, and intend to complete a PhD program to become a Professor. All the while, I will continue to build my Health & Wellness business and teach others to be fearless and improve their own lives via one-on-one coaching and group seminars.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would include traveling the world and public speaking in some capacity, while inspiring a positive change in others’ lives, no matter how small.

Are you currently a student?

Yes (part-time while working full-time)

If yes, where?

York University, Schulich School of Business

Area of study:

MBA (Masters in Business, likely to specialize in Marketing or Health Management)

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

Marketing Category Specialist at Suncor Energy

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in Poland’s capital- Warsaw, however, lived in south-western Poland near the mountains for the first 6 years of my life. I then immigrated to Canada with my parents, and spent the remainder of my childhood in Hamilton. I was a very curious child, who was once very shy. I spent most of my childhood surrounded by music, as most of my family had been involved with the performing arts. I had a challenging time adjusting to my new country initially, as I did not speak a word of the language. Once I learned, my parents decided to throw another challenge my way and placed me in a French Immersion program where I once more didn’t speak a word of the language. Although at the time, I struggled with these hurdles, I am grateful to them for consistently pushing me outside of my comfort zone, even during childhood, as it had a significant impact on who I am today.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

The most unusual job I have had was my first job at a Petro-Canada Gas Station, selling lottery tickets, cigarettes and gasoline- although I drive a car, I have never gambled or smoked, making it an unusual job for a teenager. I also worked in Quality Assurance at a telemarketing company (when someone calls and says ‘this call may be recorded for quality purposes…,’ I was listening)

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent is counting to 3 with my tongue, or rapping the entire Sir-Mix-A-Lot song “I like big butts.” Also, in high school, I was on the step squad, and can still remember some of our stepping routines!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I have a very difficult time selecting one most interesting place as everywhere I’ve had the opportunity to visit had something incredibly interesting to offer, but if I had to narrow it down to a few, I would choose:

New Zealand- both islands are straight out of a fairytale. I cannot imagine a more breathtaking collection of natural wonders, in pristine condition. To top things off, Kiwis were some of the kindest and most active people I have ever met. Not to mention the food… and extreme sports… and countless adventures that NZ has to offer.
Barbados- having a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore the island with locals exposed me to a beautiful and peaceful place. With the entire country housing half the number of inhabitants of my hometown, Bajans have a distinctly unique culture.
Argentina- the passion of the people of Buenos Aires is inimitable.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

Ten years from now, I’ll be 34. At that point, I hope I am in some way sharing my life with someone- be it a partner, or child or perhaps my family and friends. I hope to have flexibility- in terms of time and resources- to continue to life freely and do what feels right to me alone. I hope to have my PhD, own my own business or be involved in showbiz in some way. I hope many of the philanthropic projects I am currently setting the groundwork for continue to thrive in ten years. I hope in ten years I have made some small contribution to better our world, while being healthy and happy.

She has dedicated her time to important events such as CIBC’s Breast Cancer Run for the Cure and, Scotiabank’s Aid’s Walk for Life. One thing that Mariangela is extremely passionate about is donating blood.

She believes that this is something that is so easy yet important for us to take part in therefore, she is a member of her University’s Red Cross Club where she promotes donating and provides updates on mobile clinics. As well, you may find Mariangela on the worldwide database for the One Match Stem and Blood Marrow Network.

During her free time you would probably see her either at the gym, sleeping, or having fun with friends and family. She has become very interested in learning about “clean” eating as well as ways to incorporate super foods into her diet. Mariangela is a believer that what is on the outside is good representation of how we are on the inside. One of her short-term goals is to prepare her body as if she were to compete in a fitness competition.

The one quality Mariangela admires most in people is their ability to smile, she believes that all of us will have to face tough times at some point or another but what is most important is what you learn and how much stronger you come out in the end. She is very optimistic about life and believes that all her dreams can come true as long as she works hard and sets her mind to it. After all, everything is very much mind over matter.

Languages spoken fluently

I can read, write, and speak Spanish and English fluently. These are two languages that I engage in on a daily basis and in the next few years I would love to become fluent in Italian.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

As I continue to grow as a person, I find that my interest are often either changing or expanding. However, one interest that has stuck throughout my entire life has been a desire to help people in need. For me, that intense desire to support other individuals and being of aid during a struggle ultimately shapes who I am and what I believe. Influenced by this interest, I strive to donate blood approximately every 56 days with the Canadian Blood Services, and I am registered with their One Match Stem Cell and Marrow Network program. Aside from that, as I have matured I have also developed an increasing fascination in educating myself about “clean” eating as well as incorporating super foods into my diet. I believe that what is on the outside is a representation of how we are on the inside therefore, fitness and healthy living is not only something I am captivated by but also a necessity. Other than that, I believe that the rest of my interests are common to other people my age and older. Activities that I enjoy are of course, travelling, spending time with friends and family, going to movies, catch up sessions with friends, going dancing (I definitely like to party and have fun), listening to music, the feeling I get after a good work out, camping, volunteering, and recently I have started to enjoy cooking. Basically, any situation in which I am actively interacting with others is one I will enjoy.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

Growing up I took several acting classes and actually made into an improvisation competition, also I participated in school plays like the Wizard of Oz. I have taken a speed-reading course, dance classes, CPR, babysitting, etc. The major training I am receiving right now is in fitness from my wonderful trainer WBFF Pro, Bree Lind, as well, from being a part of Miss Universe Canada I am acquiring new skills on walking, leadership, interviews, and poise.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

As a child I participated in tennis and swimming, then in junior high I was on the junior volleyball team and now that I am older I wish I would have stuck to any sport for longer than I did. I love playing uncompetitive soccer and as a young adult in order to stay fit, I like to work out, lift weights as well as attend fitness classes such as Zumba, Kickboxing and Hot Yoga.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I am so grateful to come from a family where not only my parents but also members from my extended family are people that I admire tremendously. Their examples of coming together in unity, being courageous, determined, and hard working are qualities that continue to influence my life. My family has taught me to believe in my dreams, and to be strong and fearless. They have proven the importance of family and this is something I wish for everyone to feel.

I am also influence by several other people, one of which was a former Miss Venezuela and a third runner up at the Miss Universe Pageant. Eva Ekvall, aside from her involvement in these pageants, was also a news anchor, author, mother, wife and a cancer advocate. She is no longer with us but, in her 28 years of life and especially during the time she fought breast cancer, she set the record high for being someone with superior internal strength, raising awareness as well as being optimistic. For her ability to smile while enduring such a hard battle after having just given birth to her first and only daughter, the strength and positive outlook that Eva Ekvall had, has definitely impacted my life. I know that there are many other people that also deserve being acknowledged for their strength and it is those people, the fighters, the people that tend to leave the biggest imprint on my life.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Until now my proudest personal accomplishment has been getting into University right after finishing High School. What makes me exceptionally proud about this is that to me, it means that I am on the right track to achieving my dreams. I am also very proud of who I have become and how I have dealt with life experiences. I am proud to see some of the characteristics I admire most of other people develop naturally in myself.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most unique thing that has ever happened to me was right before entering a dentist appointment; I was hit by car from behind just like in the scene from the movie Superbad. Thankfully I was not hurt but for some reason instead of being shocked I found the situation to be very funny and my mom could not understand why.

I think that he most interesting thing about me is my way of thinking. I am the type of person who loves to share my opinion but at the same time I am very accepting and respectful of other peoples thoughts and interest. I think this is interesting about me because although I am in constant thought, I am also very easy going, and open-minded.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

As I have mentioned before, my career ambition is to continue studying. I would like to be graduated from Medicine and specialize in one of two very different fields that interest me, which are, either cardiology or obstetrics. Currently, I am a Bachelor of Science student and my plan is to graduate and take the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT. Shortly after, I would like to be accepted into Medical school at a credited University in Canada.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My “dream job” in life would involve for me to have my own private practice but also travel parts of the world a few months throughout the year. I would like to use medical knowledge/services to provide to less fortunate people. I hope to create a non-profit foundation and would also like to be actively involved in existing charities such as SOS Children’s Villages, Save the Children, IAVI, RAIN, and Canadian Blood Services. Someday I would like to be asked to be a public/ inspirational speaker to kids and teenagers about work that I have done.

Are you currently a student? If yes, where? Area of study:

I am currently a second year student at the University of Calgary pursing a Bachelor of Biological Science degree.

Are you currently employed? If yes, what is your occupation?

Yes, currently I am employed as a receptionist/ key holder at the Calgary West Soccer Centre.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in Venezuela and I lived there until I was 8 years old, then I moved to Calgary, Alberta for my parents work. I have always lived in Calgary and my childhood was a very happy one. I got to enjoy my grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, etc., while still living in Venezuela and here in Canada I grew up surrounded by my parents and two younger siblings, Isabella (14) and Adrian (9). I have been very lucky to live an incredible childhood in which I was, and continue to be surrounded by unconditional love and support. Being the oldest in the family has been very good to me because having younger siblings is extremely fun to come home to. There is never a boring moment in my house. The only thing that I have missed growing up is having more of my family close as the majority of them live in Venezuela.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

A few years ago with the support of my family I started my own company called M2I clothing, it had a website and was registered with Moneris. This was very exciting for me, I would meet with company representatives of William Rast, Joes, etc., to pick out which of the jeans I wanted to order, and I got to be one of the first to see the upcoming collections. With this experience I got to explore my marketability and business running skills at a young age, it was a good challenge and I learned a lot about myself.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have volunteered with CIBC’s Breast Cancer, Run for the Cure event in which I was team leader at the Eau Claire registration session. I also volunteered with Scotiabank’s Aid’s Walk for Life, helping with food and water distribution to participants. As well, I am a proud blood donator, and I am on the database for the One Match Stem and Blood Marrow Network, I think that this is important to promote and I do so by being a member of the Red Cross U of C Club. In addition I have volunteered at events with the Venezolanos in Calgary Association, I was part of the Emerging Leaders Program during my first year at University and I have been an orientation guide at the University of Calgary’s Open House in 2011.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent, according to my parents, is my ability to inspire people, however, in my opinion; my most unusual talent remains to be found.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Every place that I have gone to has been very interesting in its own way. Last summer I was able to travel to Philadelphia with my family, which was an exciting experience because my dad actually went to school there and had wanted to go back for a while. Being able to share that with him was nice especially because he told us a lot of good and bad stories as we drove around local places. During that same trip we stopped in New York, it was my first time going there but thanks to Hurricane Irene our outings were very limited.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I will be 29 and for sure I would like to have graduated Medicine and be starting to work in my field of specialization. I hope to be living in a house or apartment of my own or perhaps with a significant other, enjoying the process of decorating it into my/our own style. If I was to be married and the time was to be right, perhaps start a family. However, I think that only time will tell and destiny will take its course.
