What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My long-term career goal is to become a Social Worker and work in the field of Child Protection. Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

My parents are Pentecostal Pastors. Because of this we have moved around quite a bit in a short period of time. I have lived in eight different communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. Moving around was sometimes difficult as a child, but it has helped me become the person I am today. I have a nuclear family with one sister. We are very close, and always agree to communicate about everything. I have a lot of great memories from my childhood. My mom is very creative, making birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and family trips exciting and memorable.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

One summer, I worked on a Church project, and was tasked with painting the chuch (outide!)

List any volunteering you have done.

10 years of volunteering with a number of church-organized functions
2-week trip to Malawi, Africa volunteering in an orphanage
3 years of volunteering at Memorial University
4 months planning Memorial’s largest event -- orientation
CBC Radio Telethon Volunteer
TCP Healthcare Foundation volunteer
Beagle Paws volunteer

What is your most unusual talent?

Comedy. I love to laugh but I love making others laugh more!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Malawi, Africa. What was most interesting, was the maturity of the children -- they were left to raise their younger siblings as if they were adult care-givers. I witnessed a six year-old girl taking her infant sibling to the hospital -- it was incredible.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be a successful Social Worker, and hopefully have some of my writing published.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

As a spirited young woman, I like to be involved in the community. While this has proven to introduce me to new opportunities and avenues to develop skills, I have learned that dedicating yourself to too many causes often results in you giving less than your best. I am dedicated to my job, school, and community but I think it is better to give your best to everything you’re involved in as opposed to commiting half-heartedly. Before I seek a new challenge I make sure I have the time and energy to see it through to completion so I know I can give my best attention and effort.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

Maintaining a healthy active lifestyle is really important to me. I am a former Les Mills Step Instructor for Goodlife Fitness (currently off for traveling purposes) I enjoy running, cycling, kickboxing and indoor rock climbing. Other interests include traveling, photography, meditating, and of course spending time with my friends and family.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I earned my Bachelor of Applied Arts Degree in Illustration and I am currently freelancing as a children’s illustrator.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I believe that every person we cross paths with in this life is a teacher. Whether through love or hurt, everyone we meet teaches us something.

However, I think that my friend Paralympian Josh Cassidy has had the most influence on my life. Being around him has taught me that nothing in this life is impossible, that with every adversity is an equal or greater outcome. He always says: “Just know what you want, and Do it”.

I know I want this, so I am doing it.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Besides participating in this pageant, I’m very proud of the Eight books I’ve illustrated during the past Four years. Getting positive feedback and seeing people’s reactions to them never gets old.

However, on a personal level I have got to say that sponsoring 11-year-old Tapu from Bangladesh is my proudest accomplishment so far!

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I’m a constantly evolving person, always changing. And that constant change comes hand in hand with the change of interests, likes, and dislikes. I am not the same person I was a year ago, and I most definitely won’t be the same person a year from now. I can never predict where my inner voice leads me. But I trust it, and I’m always looking forward to the journey ahead.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I’m a very creative person that seeks to achieve balance in everything I do in life. My career is no exception, it needs to help me evolve as a spirit, yet lets me contribute to the people around me in a creative, light, and fulfilling way. Being a part of Miss Universe Canada will get me that much closer to attaining a fulfilling, creative career, that allows me to make the difference I’m meant to do during my lifetime, on a much bigger scale than through my individual effort.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

Since I’m a constantly evolving person, my “dream job” tends to evolve with me. So I can’t really narrow it down to one particular thing. However, what all my “dream jobs” had and will always have in common is: Creativity, Fulfillment, and a Purpose. Balancing myself and what’s around me is a key element in whatever it is I do now and will do in the future.

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I’m currently a freelance children illustrator. And a Senior Graphic Designer at an advertising agency.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was blessed to have the childhood I had. It was filled with love, support, and travel. I come from a loving family of four. They are my source of strength as I am theirs. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for them. I was born and raised in Amman, Jordan, yet spent most of my Summer and Christmas breaks here in Canada. My fondest childhood memories are equally split between these two countries I call “Home”. Being exposed to both the Eastern and Western Worlds at such an early age, I was able to see the beauty in both of these Worlds. The culture, the nature, the people. All the things that made them so similar yet so unique. Bridging the gap between these two worlds, and enabling people to see how similar we all really are, is something I am very adamant on achieving in my life. Miss Universe Canada is the perfect platform for that.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I consider illustrating children’s books to be a pretty interesting career. The reactions, and seeing people’s faces light up never gets old. I also worked as a Step Instructor at Good Life Fitness.

Being on stage was the complete opposite of sitting in my studio illustrating by myself all day. Loved the contrast and challenges they both brought into my life.

List any volunteering you have done.

I volunteered at a couple of fitness conventions during the summer to raise money for Charity, as well as donating art pieces for charitable silent auctions.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Going to Beijing, China for the 2008 Paralympic Games definitely holds a special place in my heart. A trip overflowing with culture, excitement, amazing energy, and very dear company. It is one trip that will always hold a special place in my heart.

However, two days before finding out that I got accepted into MUC I was all packed and ready to go on a 3 month self exploring Journey to Thailand, Bali, and India. Though that plan was unhesistantly put on hold, it is something that is definitely still on my To Do list.

Looking forward to immerse myself in their rich cultures and learn all about it…I’ll keep you updated!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

This is a question that I honestly could never answer for one reason. I’m constantly evolving and so are my interests, and my goals. However, I read the Law of Attraction a few months ago. And I decided to have 2012 be my “experimental” year. A Dream, Believe, Live. Kind of year. And being here is a huge proof that this works. And it actually is pretty magical.

So though I can’t tell you exactly where I will be in 10 years, I can with all certainty tell you that I will be exactly where I’m supposed to be, doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing, and getting that much closer to fulfilling my life’s purpose, whatever it is. I won’t stop till i find my “Niche”.

The thing that maintains a balance between my spiritual self and physical self. Can’t wait to find it.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English & Cantonese

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My interests include a range of activities that help me stay mentally and physically active. I have a strong keenness and love to learn that has started from a very young age. Anything that is fascinating, new or rare can keep me preoccupied for a very long time! I also pride myself in being open- minded about the world which has led me to have some fairly interesting experiences. Being happy, fulfilled and curious are components to being mentally healthy, which I believe is just as critical as staying physically active. I love being spontaneous, adventurous and having new experiences which has inspired many of the activities that I join. From white-water rafting to zip-lining in Whistler to climbing Grouse Mountain in Vancouver, I’ll just about try anything that most people deem challenging.

Apart from keeping active, mentally and physically, I love to meet new people, try new foods and travelling the world. I think there is such an amazing quality about the act of travelling and having different experiences that just can’t be explained. My greatest interest is travelling to different parts of the world and educating myself culturally and emotionally what the world, literally has to offer.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

This past summer 2011, I took an acting class at Austin-Tuck Studios in Vancouver with Deb Podowski. It was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. Acting is truly a beautiful art form that requires hard work and perseverance that pushes all the pre-conceived notions of ‘dramatic arts’ to the side.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I’m an avid volleyball and soccer player and the occasional cross- country skier. I used to play competitive volleyball in a summer league a few years ago that really taught me the values of teamwork and overcoming obstacles.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

Other than my parents, the one person that has had the most influence on my life is my great friend and mentor, Sosan Hua who by trade is a certified dietician and also co- chair of the Canadian Cancer Society, Chinese forum. It is not only by her qualifications that make Sosan impressive, it is also through her great heart, her humble advice and her passionate ear to listen.

I remember a few years ago when I was stuck at a very difficult fork in the road and I could barely inch forward. I was held back by indecision, confusion and mostly self- doubt; not sure what to do, if I could accomplish anything and if I could live up to my monstrous expectations. And from that, I remember Sosan being there so patient and loyal with me not only coaching but consoling me that growing carries its own pains and it’s not always physical. I remember her telling me that we can’t perfectly plan every step of our future and most times, things just fall into place when we follow our heart and do what we’re passionate about. It’s from those words that I learned to let go of things I can’t control and to focus on the things I can. I have Sosan to thank for teaching me some of the greatest lessons in life and showing by example that I can really be the amazing, successful and fulfilled woman that I set out to be.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

The proudest personal accomplishment that I’ve had to date was the organization and execution of the Launch Party of Prestige, the marketing company I co-founded last year. In less than a month, I worked really hard and diligently with a team to put together not only an amazing event but a brand featuring some of the best up-and-coming makeup artists in Toronto. My team and I sought sponsorships, pulled together an overwhelmingly successful marketing campaign and secured a partnership with Natural Creations Salon to permanently feature our makeup-artists in house. On the night of the Launch Party at Natural Creations Salon, over 200+ guests arrived, some of my family and friends showing their support and admiration of the brand we put together.

I remember after giving an introduction to the guests and handing off the microphone to my colleague, I looked around and saw the vision of what I helped create come to life in a pool of smiles gleaming off everyone’s faces. Not only were they impressed by the company that I helped put together but they were so happy that we had done it so successfully. I remember that moment very distinctly when I felt very proud of myself, from seeing everything come together after so much hard work and sleepless nights but most of all, making my loved ones proud.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing about me is that I have a startling, border-line eidetic memory. It is particularly strong for memories early in my childhood, such as the time when my brother pushed me off my porch balcony not only causing me to lose all my front teeth but swallowing them too! I also remember when I was around 5 years old my brother convinced me that his invisible friend who was also a ghost named “Oscar” followed us around and lived behind our curtain. When the curtain would flicker, it meant that Oscar was mad and trying to get out.

My memory is not only extended to early childhood events but it’s particularly robust and useful for directions to places I’ve been before. I can actually visualize places and their surroundings, which comes in handy when navigating a mall!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to ultimately become an executive of my own marketing and communications firm. My greatest passions are being creative, public speaking and travelling which I believe are encapsulated in the marketing and advertising industry. I firmly believe that great work and inspired ideas can come from a safe, creative and collaborative atmosphere and I would love to start my own firm with that philosophy. With my background and undergraduate degree in Psychology, I believe to have a fundamental understanding of how and why individuals behave which is critical in the communications industry. I would love to take that wealth of knowledge and apply it in the marketing world by pursuing a specialized certificate in marketing management or public relations next fall at Humber College. After a few years of work experience, I foresee myself returning back to school to pursue my M.B.A. I believe being successful is taking risks and continually learning which I am undoubtedly excited and ready for.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My “dream job” in life would to do something that is gratifying, fulfilling and fun! I love to be a part of something where I could travel, meet new people and learn new cultures while utilizing my strengths for communication. But at the end of day, I would also love to do something that is meaningful and carries a message that makes a difference. A “dream job” of mine would possibly be to be a spokesperson or a writer for an international non-profit or charitable organization.

Are you currently a student?

Yes

If yes, where?

University of Toronto

Area of study:

Mental Health, Psychology

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

Server @ Frankie Tomatto’s Restaurant

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in East York, Toronto in the smallest house on the street, living with my parents, brother and grandparents. I remember having the upmost love for learning and looked forward to school each and every day. I believe this ingrained passion of mine came from my parents who really encouraged and was proud of my eagerness and curiosity to learn. Outside of the classroom, I participated in almost every extracurricular activity that my schedule allowed. I was on the student council and school journal for most of high school, I played alto saxophone in the band, was a member of a number of associations from the Athletic Club to Human Rights Watch and played on a few sports team. I even was the back- catcher for the softball team when I was in elementary school!

Growing up in an immigrant household where the primary language was not English was sometimes difficult. I remember feeling very anxious for student-teacher nights because I was afraid my parents wouldn’t understand. Because of this language barrier, my parents hadn’t been much of a presence for school plays or band nights that my school organized but I always understood and I knew they were proud and happy that I was involved in things that they never got to experience.

My childhood is very nostalgic for me, I remember a lot of laughter, some tears but overall many great memories filled with lots of love.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

One of the most interesting but unusual jobs I’ve ever held was as a receptionist at a restaurant. One time, the accounting manager was paranoid that thieves would rummage through our trash to steal information for identity theft that he asked me to personally shred confidential documents by hand and to distribute different pieces in different garbage bags which would then be dumped in different jurisdictions of the city.

List any volunteering you have done.

I’ve volunteered in the past with Lawyers Feed the Homeless, where Osgoode Law Society opened its doors during the Christmas holidays to feed the homeless and less fortunate. This experience was such an eye opener for me that within our own city, there are so many people that not only need help but most of all, they seek company and love. I’ve also volunteered with Canadian Cancer Society, promoting and growing awareness of cancer prevention in the Toronto Chinese community. With many of the baby boomer generation aging and many of them of immigrant descent, there’s a vast majority that aren’t aware and don’t understand the dangers of cancer and the likelihood of it occurring. I’ve also dedicated my time recently in the past few years with a local organization, CCYAA (Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association) in developing and running a strong program in promoting youth participation in sports especially in the Asian communities. Sports is such an amazing avenue to develop social and teamwork skills, personal responsibility and reliability, CCYAA strives to encouraging youth to start and stay active in athletic activities.

What is your most unusual talent?

My unusual talent and one of my favorite pastimes is observing others to analyze their body language. In my past experiences, I’ve had some success in monitoring whether strangers or friends’ body language during significant events and been able to predict what they would do next or what they felt at the time. I think that body language is universal and analyzing it to understand others is a fun yet unusual talent.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I’ve been is Paris, France. I’m not sure if it’s from my love of its architecture, or the sound of the French language or my mild shock from its liberal culture but I fell in love with the city. From the exquisite fashion to the cuisine I’ve only heard about in movies, Paris was simply amazing. But what really caught my eye was visiting all the great museums, from the Louvre to the Palace of Versailles- these were sites I’ve only studied before in textbooks and when I able to finally visit them, I felt like I was living out a part of history and dream of my own.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years, I hope to be a successful entrepreneurial business woman. I envision that I will the CEO of my own marketing and public communications company dealing with some of the greatest corporate brands in the industry. When I’m not at work, I would also like to be leveraging my experience and platform to run an internationally-wide non-profit foundation setting up after school programs and workshops primarily to build and maintain a healthy mental lifestyle for children and teens. With my foundation, I aim to bring an end to bullying, to bring awareness to mental illnesses and to encourage positive self- esteem and acceptance of others.

Aside from my professional and volunteer accomplishments, in ten years, one of my greatest goals is to become a mother. Being able to raise a child of my own and to share my transformation to motherhood with my family would be an unbelievable joy.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I think it is easy to look at ourselves and unto others and analyze our best attributes, what’s our quirkiest or most interesting traits and what we hope to accomplish in the future. But I also know it is equally important to look back and reflect on moments we wish we could take back or change, as a necessary step to grow. And my own moment in life that I wish I could go back to change would be all the occasions I missed out in embracing my Chinese heritage and mastering the Cantonese language. I find myself now at 22 years old slightly uncomfortable having to fluently converse in Chinese because of my lackluster skill. If I had known back then what I know now in my early 20’s, I would have practiced every day with my family and shared with all my friends what an amazing language and culture the Chinese community has to offer. Having and experiencing our own unique cultures and languages is the cornerstone of what makes Canada stand out internationally, above the rest. I wish I had at a younger age and I hope youth everywhere today accept, enjoy and love every aspect and color of who they are. I now embrace my Chinese Canadian heritage as a strong component of my identity and I’m more proud than I ever was.

Kylee Jean Apers - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Kylee Jean Apers

Kylee Jean Apers | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 24

Height: 5'7"

Hometown: Armstrong

BIO: Kylee is an Okanagan girl… She attended elementary school in Kelowna and high school in the little town of Enderby.

Her family had a small farm, but at one point they raised forty registered, red Angus cattle. Kylee was very active in school and also participated in a 4H club for two years.

After graduation, she began her post secondary education to work towards becoming a dental hygienist.

She was the youngest dental hygiene graduate in her class and now has her Bachelor in Dental Science. Last year Kylee started doing some local modeling and building a portfolio of work.

Her portfolio impressed Allan International Models of Kelowna who signed her to their agency.

Kylee believes that working hard for what you receive not only teaches you how to be successful in life but also to appreciate its worth and not lose sight of what is most important in life.

During her hygiene education Kylee became involved in a number of community events, ranging from walks, galas, and fundraisers, and volunteered at two free or lower income dental clinics. Her favourite aspect of dental hygiene is teaching someone one-on-one. In hygiene school she had the opportunity to see and educate people who were, for the most part, of lower socioeconomic status and without the school would have probably not received dental care.

Firstly, she recalls, the appreciation was mind blowing, but really taking the time with each patient to individually discuss, plan, and carryout their needed treatment still remains the highlight of her dental hygiene career. Kylee hopes to go on a dental mission trip and get involved in other humanitarianism work in the near future.

Kylee believes it’s hard to always believe in yourself and go for your dreams, but that the only limitations you have in life are the ones you impose on yourself. To Kylee, Miss Universe Canada is an amazing opportunity for influence, encouragement, and change.

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I have many interests including sports and being active, travel, learning and reading. I like to work with people who share a common goal. I most enjoy trying new things and pushing myself to grow.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I was involved in acting class for two years in high school and in participated in speeches and demonstrations in a 4H club for two years.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Soccer, volley-ball, snowboarding

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I really can’t say anyone other than my mom. Her life reminds me of the Phoenix, rising from the ashes and living again. My mom is so inspirational to me and others in so many ways.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

It would be graduating with a high GPA with my Bachelor in Dental Science. I was the youngest dental hygiene graduate in my diploma program. After that I started working full time and enrolled in my final year of university. It was a lot of hard work and many late nights, but it was very worth it.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I think the most interesting thing about me would be all that I have accomplished in life so far and all that I plan to accomplish. By just looking at me you might not guess that I was the youngest dental hygiene graduate in my diploma program; or that I have snow mobiled to the top of a mountain just to snowboard down; or that I’ve changed the head gasket on a pickup truck; or that I chased cows on a horse and pushed then 27 kms though the brush. I hope to experience many more fantastic things in life.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I think any career that accompanies life-long learning and growth. Going to school and doing well, has been a goal of mine for some time. Now that I am graduated with my Bachelor in Science I have decided to follow some other hobbies and dreams and see where that takes me.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I’m not exactly sure what my dream job in life is just yet, but I think that personal satisfaction comes from many areas in life. I know that I want to help people – this was why I originally entered the health field. I also enjoy educating and sharing knowledge to help someone reach their goal/s. And finally I don’t mind hard work. I like working with my hands and accomplishing things. I would love to try some humanitarian work, and will go on a dental mission in the future.

Are you currently a student?

Not currently

If yes, where?

University of British Columbia graduate

Area of study:

Completed a Bachelor in Dental Science (dental hygiene) in May 2011.

Are you currently employed?

If yes, what is your occupation?

Dental Hygienist

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in the Okanagan, in both Kelowna and Enderby, B.C. My parents divorced when I was young but have remained friends since – I was raised by my mother and I have no biological siblings. My mother and I are like sisters or best friends. When I was fourteen my mom and I moved from the city to a small farm and raised, registered red Angus cattle. I have always appreciated what I have and know that I have it because I worked hard or someone who loves me worked hard.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

When I was 17 I worked at a retirement/extended care facility and planned recreation activities for the residents. It took a lot of creativity and willing to coordinate the events for the wide array of ages and skill levels, but it was very rewarding.

List any volunteering you have done.

I spent many hours volunteering at two free or low-income dental offices in Vancouver, B.C. (The Downtown Eastside Dental Clinic and Reach Dental Clinic). I have also volunteered at many community events, including: the MS Society, the Arthritis Society, MADD, the Underwear Affair, Earthsave Canada, and Starlight, Starbright. I was also active while in university with the Community Builders program at UBC-Okanagan and leadership class in high school. I was also a candy-striper during high school.

What is your most unusual talent?

Flexibility

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I would have to say Buenos Aires, Argentina. There was so much culture, architecture, and flavour. The highlight of my trip was a tango show that was so fantastic and beautiful. I also learned to tango that night.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

At age 34, I hope to have started growing my family. I will have been working at my career for some time now and find it very satisfying. The where and what are not as important to me as the feelings I get from imagining it. But I hope to have some acreage and find happiness in everyday.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I have so many goals and dreams and aspirations, it sometimes feels like I am bursting at the seams. However, when I make a goal, I become very focused and give it my all. I truly appreciate new opportunities to grow and am so excited for all that awaits for me.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

Honestly, it would be hard to narrow it down to a single person. As a child, by far my grandfather. He taught me love, and nurture. My grandfather together with my grandmother taught me faith; he taught me trust through his actions. I could always count on him. There are days, even as old as I am, that I would love to sit in his lap and have a word or two with him. I always knew everything would be ok. He was my #1 fan.

The most interesting thing that has ever happened to me, besides standing here, was winning one of the pageants and was sent to the Philippines as my award all expenses paid, plane tickets, hotel, 2 gowns, everyday make-up and hairstylist. There were 4 of us in the hotel room, went to bed at 3 AM and woke up at 5 am for rehearsal and appearances, yet full of fun and nice experiences. I was the only delegate who came from outside of the Philippines and made it to the top 15 semi-finals, along with winning the best skin award.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

To seek a career with opportunity for job growth and continue to develop skills in medical field, hopefully able to get accepted in Physician’s Assistance course and work in one of the hospitals here in Toronto.

Confucius said, “Find a job you enjoy, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Dreams come in all shapes and sizes. Follow my dream, which is working at the hospital as a Physician’s Assistance. A dream job includes not only what you want to do, but who you are doing it with.

Are you currently a student?

Yes

If yes, where?

York University

Area of study:

Health Studies

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and raised in Etobicoke. My childhood was awesome. I have the best memories. I had so much fun as a child. My brother, myself and my cousins would have a great time running around. Our parents would take us camping and fishing. We would go almost every day to the beach. No worries at all. No chores, no work and always carefree. My parents did not spoil me but my grandparents did. I was busy with extracurricular activities such as dancing lessons, singing lessons (which lasted a year), and swimming lessons and competitions. In brief, I had a very normal childhood and upbringing, I would say.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Regarding unusual jobs, I remember helping my mother when I was 12 or 13 yrs. old, with her part time job, writing names, printing papers, and getting paid a buck or two for each name or for photocopy.

List any volunteering you have done.

I volunteered for Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe by teaching the Miss Manila delegates how to walk for the pageant. I also volunteered for IPEN doing same thing. I did a fashion show for homeless children in the Philippines on behalf of PIDC.

What is your most unusual talent?

I can bend the first joint of my fingers on both hands.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I was in Italy when I was in Grade 10. I was in Milan, Amalfi Island, Rome, Venice and Florence. There are 3 words to describe Italy: historic, passionate and colourful. Culture, art and history are everywhere. Italians are passionate about everything. Everywhere is colorful. Landscape is colour saturated. The light in Venice is unlike any other places I have ever seen before, making it a photographer’s dream come true. Italy is filled with interesting culture and absolutely beautiful scenery, with lots of history. They had never heard of “Alfredo Sauce”! Their food is much lighter, and less in a serving, and not as much pasta as I was expecting.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I will be 31 then. I don’t know what I will be doing, but I know I want to work with people. If I ever become a Physician’s Assistance, I’d like to broaden my horizon and probably increase my skills in university, I’m interested in taking classes in sociology and psychology to learn what some of the options are. I will be going for a vacation in places I have never seen before. I see myself having a place of my own.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?

I strongly believe that we are all basically the same. I think it is how we think and approach certain situation in everyday life is what makes us all different and unique. I’ve always been true to myself, and I never try to be somebody I’m not. Fundamentally, we are all young ladies entering this pageant with the same purpose of winning Miss Universe Canada.

Her dreams are her greatest mentors; they have taught her to be creative, work hard, and appreciate life opportunities.

At the young age of 17, Katerina moved to Canada from Kazakhstan with the dream of understanding the world of finance that will one day help Katerina bridge the gap in wealth distribution around the world.

Just four years after arriving in Canada and working multiple jobs, her dreams inspired her to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto.

Katerina is currently part of a dedicated team of investment professionals ensuring teachers of Ontario achieve a retirement free of financial worries.

My inquisitive mind thrusts for knowledge about anything and everything that surrounds me; traveling, literature and arts have given me the opportunity to expand my understanding of different cultures across the world. I try to understand what drives current events and developments in the world so that one day I can contribute to making the world a better place for less fortunate people and communities around the globe.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring the city of Toronto with my Little Sister (who I met through Big Brothers and Sisters), and experimenting in the kitchen with delicious healthy recipes.

My high school math teacher was an incredibly inspiring woman. Despite financial hardships teachers faced at that time, she always radiated positive energy and passion for teaching. She encouraged her class to work hard on what we are passionate about and to never give up on our dreams.

My proudest personal accomplishment was the discovery of my true passions in life. My career ambition is establishing a pension fund for Canadians employed with non-for-profit organizations. I currently work at a provincial pension fund where I take every opportunity to learn how the organization functions and responds to challenges. I am also attaining multiple professional designations that will aid in building my credibility in the financial community and expand my professional network.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My “dream job” would involve using the knowledge and experiences I have accumulated through the years to make a difference in someone’s life. Knowing that I can help someone with what I am passionate about brings a great feeling of fulfillment.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and spent my childhood in Kazakhstan: a multicultural, and hospitable country. With over a hundred ethnicities residing in my birth country, I was very fortunate to be exposed to diverse cultures every day of my childhood. The best memories of my childhood lie in our local park where I would take long walks with my parents. During summer breaks I would go there to read my favorite books and enjoy the nature. To this day, I remember the courage and positivity my parents projected during the hard times our family was faced with. These memories fill me with optimism when I am faced with challenges on route to my goals.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

When I moved to Canada and started university I got a job at a local coffee shop to pay for tuition. This coffee shop attracted people from around community in the evenings. At the age of 14, I was got a chance to climb one of the highest mountains in Kazakhstan outside of the city of Almaty. We began the climb at sunrise wearing T-shirts. By sunset, we had reached the top of the mountain wearing winter jackets. It was simply breathtaking to be able to look down from the top of the mountain and see the whole city underneath.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In 10 years I inspire launch and be an active contributor to a lifestyle center for teenagers from underprivileged families in Toronto.
