Christine Adela White - Miss Universe Canada 2012

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Christine Adela White

Christine Adela White | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 26

Height: 5'11"

Hometown: Vancouver

BIO: Christine Adela White studied at the University of British Columbia where she attained a B.A. in Music, Minor Psychology.

She was inducted into the Golden Key honour society as part of her achievement in placing within the top 15% in academics within her faculty.

Christine has always had a passion for learning and teaching, and a profound love and respect for music education and therapy.

As a child, Christine was signed with a modeling and talent agency, but the experience was short-lived, as she felt the need to prioritize her education (a mind-set that followed through since grade school).

She currently works privately as a music teacher where students under her tutelage take upon the disciplines of piano, voice, and music theory.

And now since graduated and situated in her career, Christine has removed modeling from the back burner, and takes pride in her job as both a music teacher and model for runway and commercial print.

Christine believes that part of being a Canadian is recognizing and appreciating the values of multiculturalism. To complement her Canadian identity, she is also very proud of her Filipino heritage. Her mother hails from a humble town in Pangasinan, where Christine has visited several times since she was a child.

While she enjoyed her time in the Philippines, she could not overlook the poverty that she witnessed – she recalls a young girl standing on a busy street median, desperately trying to sell flowers to any stopped vehicle. Christine was taken aback as she perceived the metaphor of the situation, should the girl continue to do the same as a grown woman.

Alongside cyber-bullying and “The Ride to Conquer Cancer,” Christine has made an effort to bring awareness to humanitarian groups such as the SOS Children’s Villages in hopes that, universally, Canadians will reach out to abandoned children, like the flower-girl in the Philippines.

In 2011, Christine participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising $2,500 to benefit the B.C. Cancer foundation. Her most fulfilling moment yet is crossing the finish line on her bike after a long 270KM ride along the Pacific coast to Seattle, Washington. She did this in memory of her sister Laura. Inspired by the journey and her drive to help find a cure, she plans to ride again this year in June, soon after the pageant; it is for this reason that she proudly includes “The Ride” as part of the platform she has been fundraising for.

Christine is deemed to embody a quiet confidence. She is proud to share that her father, a retired 65-year old, is joining her this year in The Ride in memory of Laura. If he can ride 270 km and find the motivation to do so, anyone can find the will-power and humility to reach out to altruistic causes greater than our own endeavours.

It is actions like these that Christine wishes to advocate and instill in others; right thought and right action, said best by author and motivational speaker Robin Sharma, “Ideation without execution is simply delusion.”

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

English, some Tagalog and Ilocano.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My interests include: playing the piano, singing, playing the occasional console video game or MMORPG, Bikram’s yoga, cycling, watching Dr. Oz and The Doctors!

My passion is to teach music, and I find myself always curious and interested in knowing the latest in health research and treatment. I have a profound interest in incorporating my knowledge of music therapy/psychology in my teachings, especially with children.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with minor studies in Psychology. During my studies at the University of British Columbia, I also took up the practice of the Korean hour-glass drum called the Changgo!

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I started playing community league soccer at age 10, and continued all through high school. I played striker and left-mid! Growing up, I admired Mia Hamm and her ability as both an athlete and as a woman who taught through her actions: confidence, respect, and team-drive.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My sister Laura is the most influential person in my life. Because of Laura I do my best not to take life’s teachings and even its tribulations for granted – having an appreciation for modesty, and a lack of hesitation to say “thank you” are reflections I value. In the 15 years she lived, she spoke with demeanor, one respectful and empathetic of others. Laura is remembered for being compassionate and reserved, and to have surprised many of her friends when she confronted a “bully” she had witnessed taunting a classmate, helping them see the error in their ways. In the 10 years since she passed, her friends still take time to remember her – one that continues to remind me of what “friends forever” really implies. Take nothing for granted: right thought, right action – Laura’s teaching adopted as my own.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My most fulfilling moment was last year in 2011 when I crossed the finish line on my bike, 270 km after the fact as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The weather was daunting, but it made the experience that much more meaningful. Finding the will-power to pedal two days along the coast to Seattle humbled me – the distance and poor weather had little bearing on my progress, as my drive and purpose to pedal on derived from one sole purpose: I was riding in memory of my sister Laura. This year, in 2012, I plan to raise another $2500 to ride in memory of Laura as part of my Ride to Conquer Cancer – a cause I have included in my platform candidacy in the Miss Universe Canada pageant.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I am a vegetarian, but fear not – I will not convince you to change eating habits. According to my father, I chose to become a vegetarian at age 3 after he made “the dreaded mistake” of telling me how chicken nuggets were actually made. At the time, my parents felt I would eventually grow out of my state of unwillingness to eat meat, but here I am 24 years after and still not willing. In fact, it seems my father adopted my vegetarian life-style, as It is now becoming more prevalent as a healthy life-style, which is great news for someone like me whose reasoning for vegetarianism is seemingly due to mere conditioning. What’s intriguing is that I have no problem cooking meat dishes – I just won’t eat them. So do not worry, I am not offended should you choose to order a steak.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal? What would be your “dream job” in life?

My passion is to teach. I find the greatest sense of fulfillment when a student acquires the confidence, discipline, joy, and appreciation for musicianship. My love for teaching was reaffirmed and humbled when I was approached with the request to teach music to a child with autism. Words cannot express what I was feeling when this particular student smiled and acknowledged my praise for him when he successfully completed his first piece on the piano.

My goal is to eventually expand my studio (C.W. Music) into a commercial space where I can invite and hire fellow musicians and even music therapists to fulfill and teach by the motto I truly take to heart: “The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” – William Arthur Ward

Are you currently a student?

I’ve since graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in Music, minor in Psychology.

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I teach privately as a music teacher, with disciplines in piano, voice, and music theory.

I also have worked part-time as a model.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and raised in Vancouver,British Columbia and I continue to find reasons to appreciate living here. One of the fondest memories of my childhood was participating in a broad array of community centre group activities and discovering my interest and appreciation for learning – crafts, science club, music, gymnastics, Nintendo tournaments, and soccer, you name it! I have my mother and father to thank for my continuous drive to learn and educate myself in many fields, which helped me excel in school. While growing up, my parents also recognized the importance of creativity, so they allowed myself and my sister the time to play with our Barbies, play “house” and “make-believe,” write stories, draw pictures. Of course, I was always was “the teacher” when we played “house.”

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

It may be unusual that I have had only one job, and that is teaching music. I started with a small pool of clients/students when I entered university, some of whom still under my instruction!

List any volunteering you have done.

World’s Youth Choir

EPIC – environmental awareness fair

Preparing my students for Philippine Independence Day performances

Hosting a fundraiser benefiting the Canadian Red Cross to support the typhoon victims in the Philippines

What is your most unusual talent?

Knowing how to play the Korean hour-glass drum called the Changgo.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

My mom’s province, Pangasinan, in thePhilippines! Hundred islands – you can take a small boat from island to island, all very small with white sand – you feel as if you are on your own little white-sand island amidst clear, blue water! Also, too, In the city of Bolinao, there is what is called an “Enchanted Cave” where you are promised a surplus of health benefits from swimming in the cave’s underground pool!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be happy, healthy, and successful. I would like to support my parents in return for all the years of support they have given me. I would like to be a good mother and role model, advocating the teachings of compassion, empathy, and community service. In ten years, I hope to be looking back and reminiscing my many times on the bike for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, and during that same moment I want to be pondering what in the world to do next now that cancer is conquered, a cure found.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

My favourite childhood joke told by my dad:

I met a talking dog today! I asked him what was on top of the house – he replied, “Roof, roof!” I asked what was on the tree, he scuffed, “Bark! Bark!” The dog began to whimper, so I just had to ask: “How was your day?” He replied, “Ruff… ruff.”

I participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer last year in 2011, and plan to do so again this year in 2012 soon after the pageant! If you are interested in donating and supporting my ride in hopes of funding innovative treatment and research for cancer, please kindly CLICK HERE.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

I am extremely proud of myself for completing my years of training to achieve my black belt in Taekwondo. It took lots of blood, sweat and tears to get to where I am now. I learned so much about myself and what my body is capable of. We were required to write numerous essays and complete various fitness tests before taking the final black belt test which in itself, was over 3 hours long of a wide variety of Taekwondo patterns and techniques, along with sparring at 5 types of board-breaking. I pushed myself as hard as I could, breaking far more boards than I would have imagined. By taking the time to focus and learn the many patterns, I learned the art of refinment until perfection, teaching myself every move again and again until everything down to my finger placement was in perfect technique. We also had to run a 10 km marathon, which was physically and emotionally taxing, considering before then, I was not a runner, but I am extremely proud to have all of these under my belt and to have earned a new one in the process.

Chelsea Bird - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Chelsea Bird

Chelsea Bird | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 23

Height: 5'8"

Hometown: Edmonton

BIO: Chelsea Bird is a motivated and driven young woman and a born communicator. She is studying radio and television broadcasting at NAIT in Edmonton and can’t wait to put the skills she has learned to use as a news anchor or possibly radio announcer.

She was elected onto the NAIT Student Senate, and is seen as a leader for other students.

Chelsea sees the world with a unique perspective, which helps her tremendously when delivering her two radio shows that she hosts. Chelsea feeds off the energy of others, loves meeting new people, and will do anything to make someone laugh.

Her light-hearted personality and sense of humor are her best qualities.

After moving to Edmonton from Saskatoon, Chelsea originally wanted to study drama and pursue a career in the arts. However, after travelling abroad on her own and discovering her true desires in life, she came to the realization that she would rather communicate with people via reporting.

Chelsea is working towards using her love of theatre and drama to teach children how to command the stage, and reap the benefits that stage acting can give.

Chelsea is a very community-minded individual and is someone who always sets her goals bigger and bigger in order to achieve a rich and fulfilling life. She has travelled to Thailand, Europe and the United States and hopes to see much more of the world in order for her to see and help other cultures that are not as fortunate as Canadians.

Chelsea believes strongly that everyone is entitled to live a full life and has volunteered for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada by canvassing, has provided school supplies to children while in Thailand, and after going on a 3 month exchange to Germany, has spoken to students about the wonderful opportunities that students can gain by travelling.

Chelsea is a passionate individual that is continuously captivated by human nature. A rich and rewarding career as a respected broadcaster will complement her personality, and act as a platform to advocate for charities and causes closest to her heart. Chelsea feels that representing Canada at the international level would be a wonderful opportunity to work with communities less fortunate than ours that greatly need support and resources. The ability to represent Canada is a responsibility and a privilege and Chelsea feels remarkably fortunate to have such a wonderful opportunity.

Both times I travelled abroad completely by myself. I learned so much, not only about myself, but about the world and other diverse cultures, and how fortunate I am to be Canadian. What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I will try anything once- so far that has taken me abroad by myself twice, skydiving, bungee jumping and I have even ended up fracturing my skull in the process!

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I am currently studying at NAIT in the radio and television program, striving towards a career as a broadcaster. Ideally my career will take me into both radio and television at some point, as I love and respect both mediums.

Are you currently employed?

Yes.

If yes, what is your occupation?

I work for CINCO Interactive, an agency that specializes in Digital and Sponsorship. I am currently managing several active projects the likes of Ford’s Sponsorship for the Edmonton Oilers. I’m also the Western Canada Project leader for the very successful experiential and social media campaign for new Ford Escape 2013. Working in different cities has many challenges, but I welcome the opportunity to rise above them.

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with my sister and my parents. I grew up very active, playing a lot of sports, which has incorporated fitness as a big part of my life today.

I was a paid actor in a children’s play. It was very interactive, and was so fun to see the kids’ reactions, and so rewarding to see their excitement.

What is your most unusual talent?

I can personify many different goofy voices-which come in very handy for voicing radio commercials at school and entertaining children!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Thailand has been the most interesting place that I have been lucky enough to experience. The people are so warm and hospitable. Seeing a way of life so vastly different from ours in Canada gave me great perspective on life. I would love to travel there again in the future on a volunteering basis to try to give back to such a wonderful culture that-in some areas is devastatingly poverty stricken.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I hope to own my own home and have a successful career as a news anchor. Casendre Paquet - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Casendre Paquet

Casendre Paquet | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 22

Height: 5'6"

Hometown: Saint Laurent

BIO: Born and raised in Montreal, Casendre comes from a multicultural family with a lot of backgrounds, including Dominican, Haitian, Israeli, German, British and many various others. But to simplify things, she’s half Haitian and English.

When she was a little girl, she used to dream about becoming a movie star. So to be able to fulfill her dream, Casendre’s parents enrolled her into an art school, where she learned how to express her feelings through acting and painting. Then, when she got a bit older, like many other girls, her dream changed.

At 15 years old, she moved to West Africa, Benin with her family, where they lived for a couple of years. All the images that were shown on television about African countries were mostly about poverty and unlikely landscapes. Casendre, was terrified! Not only because of that, but also because she was about to leave behind her all friends and family.

She thought that she was going to be living in a small house in the middle of nowhere and perhaps made of wood. Once she arrived and saw the enormous villa in which she was about to live in for the next 3 years, and the community surrounding her, she was speechless. Africa wasn’t like all theses awful images which were shown on television.

Indeed, it was a beautiful and interesting country! It may not have been similar to Montreal, but it was sure better than what she’d expected it to be. She attended two of the best schools in Benin with different educational systems in which she obtained her BAC and IGCSE diplomas. Meanwhile, even thought she was living “the life”, it didn’t keep her from noticing how most of the local people were living in property! What really saddened her was when she saw a little girl, approximatively 8 years old, carrying a huge and heavy basket of fruits on her head at the market. She was probably working for her family’s sake, instead of being a child and attending school. This made Casendre realize how unfair life was - no child deserves to be forbidden of having a childhood or even attending school.

What she will always remember and cherish in her heart from this experience are the people, coming from all the different countries that she met during her stay. Furthermore, what she enjoyed was also taking the time to visit and explore what Africa had to offer. This involved going on a lifetime trip to Pendjari (safari park in the North of Benin), being able to visit Togo and also some of Ghana’s history.

Beneath all this, the impact of living in Africa not only made her grow up and see life from a different angle, but it also got her into realizing what she really wanted to do with hers: become a journalist. This experience gave Casendre the passion of wanting to learn more by traveling, discovering places and writing my experiences through writing. She believes Africa is where her life actually started!

Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

I fluently speak, write and read in French and in English.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

What I enjoy to do the most is traveling, discovering new cultures and meeting new people from all around the world.

I personally think that we can never learn enough. Every day, we just keep on learning more and more.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

My special training involve: acting, modeling, singing, art (painting) and writing.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I have not participated in any sports. Although, I do train a lot at the gym because I do think it is very important to work out to be healthy and in a good shape.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

The person who I’d say would have had the most influence other than my parents, is my aunt, because, even though she has been battling almost her entire life against and many diseases (breast cancer), it didn’t kept her from continuing to enjoy life.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

The proudest accomplishment, other than having the opportunity in participating to this pageant, is being able to finish a book that I’ve been working on for over 3 years now. Although, I haven’t decided yet what I’ll do with it.

Now, why is it my proudest accomplishment? Well, simply because, I’d never thought, although I know that I have the capacity of writing beautiful poems and texts, that I’d be able to finish such a huge project. This encourages me into persevering more into life.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I’d say that the most interesting thing that as ever happened to me was the opportunity of going to live in West Africa (Benin). Now why? Because I had one big chance among many others to experience what living outside of Canada was like. But, mostly because it got me into seeing how lucky I was to be standing where I am today. In other words, to be living a life that many people in this world would give anything just to have (for example: being able to go to school and have a good education).

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to become a well-known journalist, respected for her devoted work. Furthermore, I also plan in the future to write books for children’s and perhaps go into politics.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would definitely be having the opportunity in working as a journalist for a big television network company such as CTV or Radio-Canada.

Are you currently a student? If yes, where?

I am currently a student in social sciences at Lasalle College in Montreal. This is my last trimester.

Are you currently employed?

I am currently unemployed due to the fact that I’ve decided to focus more on achieving my other goals and finishing my studies.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in Montreal in 1989. This makes me 22 years old of age. I was raised as a unique child mostly by my mother since my parents got divorced when I was very young. Although, I was the only one among all my friends who her parents were separated, it didn’t keep me from living a happy life, and I was surrounded with a lot of love from all my family members. Furthermore, when I was a little girl, my dream was to become a well-known actress and singer. As you know, most of young girls have the same interests! So, because of that, my parents decided to put me into an art school where I leaned how to express my feelings trough acting and painting; and over the years, I started to develop my skills in writing. This got me where I am today.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I haven’t really had the chance to work much since I’ve turned 16, because I was living in West Africa for 3 years. But I have to say that the most interesting and enjoyable job I had was when I was about 18. I was working at customer service for a big company in Canada (HBC). Now the question is why was it one unusual job? Simply, because, I mostly enjoyed interacting with people; even though pressure was sometimes my worst enemy (as we all know, working in customer service can sometimes become stressful). Furthermore, I must also admit that this experience taught me to work under pressure; which is a very good thing, since I want to become a journalist.

List any volunteering you have done.

I haven’t done much volunteer work. but I got the chance to volunteer in «Le tour de l’île», which is an event that takes place every year in Montreal.

What is your most unusual talent?

One of my most unusual talents would apparently be that I have the capacity and the skills of transforming a common place text into something where words are refined.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place that I’ve visited and also lived so far, was in Benin (West Africa). I lived there for over 3 years. This was a huge opportunity for me. Indeed, it made me grow up into being responsible and mature. Furthermore, it also showed me how lucky we are, as Canadians, to have food on our table, a roof over our heads, to be able to go to school, obtain a diploma and get a good job.

In résumé, it showed me: what reality was outside ofCanada, it made me discover new cultures and it also brought me into wanting to travel and learn more about what the world has to offer to us.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I wish to be able to present the news on television, be writing books and traveling. Furthermore, I also hope to have the opportunity to enter politics and bring some of my acknowledge into making our nation a better country.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I’d like to add that the opportunity to participate to this pageant means a lot to me. Because, it shows me that everything is possible in life! Nothing is impossible! This only makes me want to go further in life and achieve all my goals!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My younger brother has had a profound influence on my life. Having been raised without a father he has shown an immense strength to become the young man he is today. He has taught me the value of dedication and the importance of life progression.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest accomplishment was planning a trip to Nicaragua to help children in need find an outlet to education, food, shelter, and a better future. My charitable contributions are in conjunction with a group of friends who have donated their time and energy to improve the quality of life for these children. All of the funds raised will be contributed to SOS Children’s Villages through my affiliated event. This trip will never be forgotten.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

My most interesting experience was traveling to St. Lucia, prior to my charitable efforts in Nicaragua. I witnessed firsthand the different ways people live, and the vast disparity between rich and poor. The locals seemed to find allot of meaning from family and education, despite living in a country that is relatively poor by North American standards. They seemed to find happiness through a lifestyle that was not predicated on accumulating wealth and prosperity, but rather through friends, family and an inner contentment.

The most interesting thing about me, I believe, is my spontaneity. I am very open to trying new things and traveling to new, unique destinations. Diversity is a big part of my life, and I believe that starts with experiencing other people’s cultures.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is two-fold. I currently work in biotechnology within the horticultural industry; however, my longer term goal is to become a doctor. To accomplish this goal, I will have to return to University to upgrade my Masters Degree. For me the pursuit of education is a lifelong journey.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job is to be a medical doctor, with the ability to travel and provide assistance to those people that are most in need. This will be an endeavor that can be accomplished through my philanthropic efforts.

Are you currently a student?

No

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

Biotechnologist

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in both Austria and Norway. At the age of 4 my family moved from Austria, Salzburg to Oslo, Norway. I grew up on a farm that was far removed from larger metropolitan centers. This lifestyle was very tranquil, but involved a lot of labor intensive hard work. Because of this upbringing I have learned how to drive a tractor, cook meals, fix various machinery and heavy equipment.

As children we moved houses often, and sometimes this meant changing schools. Although I was enrolled at the same all-girl’s private school for most of my childhood and teenage years. My father passed at the age of four, so my younger brother and I were raised by my Mother and Grandparents.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I used to be a QC Inspector for pressure vessels; in charge of ASME Stamps that allowed these vessels to be sent over seas – being the only female at this particular site and one of few in the industry I became quite strong in decision making.

List any volunteering you have done.

Brenda Stratford Association, Brown Bagging for Children, Epilepsy Charity, Special Olympics Torch Run, Law Enforcement Run, Run for a Cure, Mustard Seed, WSPCA – Animal Rescue, United Way, EPCOR Centre for Performing Arts, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, SOS Children’s Villages, Unicef, Alzheimer Society of Canada, Science Alberta Foundation, West Coast Legal and Education Fund, Save the Children Canada, and KIA Kindness In Action – in Nicaragua

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent is the ability to catch gummy bears with my mouth from long distances. I realized this unusual talent by accident. My younger brother has also been ‘blessed’ with the same gift. He was telling my mother about his unique display of entertainment, and I decided to try it for myself; the first throw was from 15 feet, then up to distances of 30 feet or more – without even wearing glasses!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

St. Lucia is the most interesting place I have been. There are many stray animals running around the towns and beaches. I saw a random donkey licking a car and another tied up as a pet. There are many horses running around on the loose, all of whom have owners. If someone takes the owners horse for a ride or steals it, the horse will return home without help or instruction. I call them boomerang horses.

Driving on the left side of the road with only ‘Slow’ signs is also quite nerve wrecking. The “Slow” signs seem to be a replacement for ‘Stop’ signs on the island. I asked our driver, “What is the speed limit after a ‘Slow’ sign?” He responded, “its take your time…”

Some of the St. Lucian landscapes are breathtaking. The view of the Piton Mountains from Ladera Resort and Restaurant is nothing short of extraordinary. This destination has been publicized as one of Oprah’s favorite places to vacation, and has also been ranked by travel magazines as the number one destination.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be working as a medical doctor, managing several institutions, and possibly teach medicine. I aspire for my field work to take me to various international destinations.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

Other interests of mine include playing the guitar, staying active both indoors and outdoors, and hosting small dinner parties for family and friends.

I have participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, track and field, swimming, gymnastics, waterskiing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, skiing, badminton, and golf.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

One person who has had a great amount of influence on my life is one of my volleyball coaches, George Light. He helped to teach me the importance of playing to one’s strengths and acting with integrity. Although I learned a great deal from him about volleyball both technically and tactically, I also learned about leadership and how to achieve excellence in a team environment.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

One of my proudest personal accomplishments was achieved in my graduating year at the University of British Columbia as a senior on the Varsity Volleyball team. As a captain I was able to lead my team to a National title which broke a thirty year drought and I was honoured to received the MVP of the tournament. Another personal accomplishment that I am proud of was being selected to Canada’s National Volleyball team. My final tournament with Team Canada at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico marked the end of three seasons with the program and left me with a lifetime of memories. I am proud of these accomplishments not only for the success that I have experienced through competition, but also for the opportunities that they have created to allow me to continue to grow as a person.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most unique thing that has ever happened to me is being one of the sixty-five finalists for Miss Universe Canada 2012. After an extensive career in volleyball, I would never have imagined that an opportunity such as this one would present itself to me. The transition is one that I am eager to pursue and will allow me to expand my comfort zone and experience something new.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to create my own sports marketing company which specializes in large-scale fundraising events and recruiting major companies to sponsor different sports organizations. I am well on my way to accomplish this goal since I have several contacts in the sports world and I am nearing completion of an Event Marketing Certificate from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. However, I think that the biggest factor which will contribute to my success in achieving this goal is how much passion I have surrounding giving back to a community that has enriched my life and contributed to my development. I believe that with passion and dedication to hard-work, success is sure to follow.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job in life is exactly what my career ambition is, since there is no better time to follow your dreams than in the reality that you live in.

Are you currently a student?

Yes, part-time.

If yes, where? British Columbia Institute of Technology

Area of study: Event Marketing. I also graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Philosophy.

Are you currently employed?

Yes, part-time.

If yes, what is your occupation?

Athlete and Volleyball Instructor

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised primarily in Richmond, British Columbia and I am the second oldest of four children. My parents really promoted living active lifestyles and so we were all heavily involved with sports and other activities. My parents instilled in us the importance of also developing our mind, and from this I believe a passion for knowledge was ingrained inside of me. I am happy to say that my family is tremendously supportive of every endeavor I have undertaken and in adulthood they are not only family, they are also close friends.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

The most unusual job I have had in my life was as a professional volleyball player in Azerbaijan. In my third season of playing professionally overseas, I lived in Baku and it was an experience like no other. After playing the previous two seasons in Sweden and Austria, Azerbaijan offered a completely different experience; it is a country influenced by both Russian and Iranian culture, and was unlike any place I had played volleyball in or visited before.

List any volunteering you have done.

At an early age I became familiar with the idea of giving back and so volunteering has been something that I take pride in participating in. I have helped to distribute goods and food to the homeless and assisted with recreation programs for residents in an intermediate care lodge for the elderly. My most recent volunteering focuses on being an ambassador to today’s youth about the importance of education and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent is that I can speak in with a variety of different accents. I first discovered I could mimic accents in high school and I have been adding new ones to my repertoire ever since. To this day, I will hear an interesting accent and try to decipher where they are from and then try to speak with their accent.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

One of the most interesting places I have been to is Machu Picchu in Peru. While on the National Volleyball Team we went on tour with Peru’s National Volleyball Team and did a partial hike to see the ancient Inca architecture. The view was absolutely breathtaking and there was a sense of awe as we stood in the ruins and took in the experience.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I will be making a substantial impact on the sports community with my sports marketing company by generating revenue for athletic organizations so they may provide more opportunities for athletes. In doing so, I hope to positively influence many children and youth’s lives so that they may have the potential to achieve greatness without being limited by a financially constrained organization. I also plan on being an excellent wife and mother in an incredibly loving and supportive family, which I believe will be my most rewarding achievement.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

In life we are often given the chance to act, and I believe that once a person has made that choice that they should commit themselves wholeheartedly. I feel so blessed to have had the chance to seize this opportunity and I hope that I can make an impact in any way possible through Miss Universe Canada to inspire others to act to make positive changes around them.

My interests include nursing, active lifestyle, yoga, baking, writing poetry, volunteering, reading and modeling. I enjoy being outdoors whether it’s camping, fishing, quadding, snowmobiling or just going for walks. In my spare time I try to spend as much time as possible with my loving family. They are very supportive and caring and I am blessed to have them all in my life.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I have taken piano and singing lessons, as well as hip-hop and tap dancing. I am certified in health care provider level CPR and first aid.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I love to be physically active and have grown up participating in basketball, volleyball, badminton, shot putt, high jump, discus, hurtles, snowboarding, relay and long distance running. I also play softball, golf, and hockey recreationally.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

I would definitely choose my grandparents. Growing up I spent most of my time at their house visiting and helping around the farm. They helped raise me to become a strong independent woman with a good head on my shoulders. They also taught me the importance of family, which will continue to guide my decisions for the rest of my life. Because of them I believe that anything is possible with a little hard work and dedication. They are the strongest and most loving people I know, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have such a close relationship with them.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment would be being accepted into the University of Alberta for nursing. I had always dreamed of attending university and becoming a registered nurse working in the Children’s Stollery Hospital. I couldn’t be prouder that I am making my dream come true. I have always believed that anybody has the ability to make the world a better place and that is one of the main reasons why I chose nursing as a career – to improve the quality of life for individuals.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing that has ever happened to me would be becoming an older sister at the age of 12. I now am blessed to have three adorable younger sisters aged 6, 4 and 2. The most interesting thing about me would be how quirky I am. I love to laugh and I am not afraid to make fun of myself whether it’s dancing in public or smiling too much.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to become a Registered Nurse, obtain my masters’ degree and become a Nurse Practitioner. I am currently attending my second year of nursing at the University Of Alberta. My other biggest ambition in my life is to create my own non-profit organization for sexually abused children.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would be becoming a Nurse Practitioner and being able to travel the globe. I would love to work in Italy, Greece, Hawaii, Australia, and pretty much every other area of the world.

University of Alberta

Area of study:

Collaborative Nursing Program

Yes!

I am a server at a local pub in Edmonton

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised on a farm in Wildwood, AB until I was about 9 years old. At this point my mom married my step dad and we moved to an acreage south of Seba Beach, AB. Growing up in the country was probably one of the best experiences of my life as I now enjoy being outdoors more than anything. It enabled me to gain a very strong relationship with my family and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. I had an amazing childhood filled with love and support. Though my mom wasn’t able to give me everything she wanted to, she taught me the most important values in life – family, love, and helping others.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Shelling peas with my grandmother and picking rocks in the field on the family farm come to mind! However, these experiences come with some of the greatest learning opportunities about the important values in life. The insights gained during the conversations at that time have greatly impacted my life.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have volunteered with Mustard Seed, Hope Mission, MS Society, Santa’s Anonymous, Act Alberta and various senior homes. Through volunteering I have contributed my time to preparing and serving meals to the less fortunate, clothing drives, raising funds, assisting live auctions, bake sales, modeling for a humanitarian campaign, and assisting the elderly in their day to day routines.

What is your most unusual talent?

I can juggle!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

That is a toss-up between Italy and the Dominican Republic. I fell in love with Italy the moment I arrived and I plan on returning as soon as I can. It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. The buildings and homes are quaint, rustic and filled with history. I hope to one day buy a house and move there. During a family vacation in the Dominican Republic my parents made a point of showing me how some less fortunate individuals live. That eye-opening experience lead me down the path of wanting to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I hope to have a thriving career as a Nurse Practitioner and as a model. I also hope that I will own my own home in the country and to have travelled all over the world. Mostly I hope to have gained a ton of experience and be living life to the fullest! Perhaps I might even be starting a family.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I am a very personable and friendly individual. I love to meet new people and gain new experiences. My goal in life is to become the best version of myself that I can be, and to recognize every experience as an opportunity. I am very proud to be a delegate in this pageant and I hope to continue to make my friends and family proud of me.
