BIO: Amanda Morie is a person who strives to be the best each and every day. Today is an opportunity for something new and great, an opportunity to give back and achieve the best for you and others.

Life is a luxury and all the simple little things are what keep Amanda smiling, appreciative and adventurous. She sees the beauty in everyone’s characteristics and cherishes them to the fullest.

Amanda is always happy, positive, committed and driven by the world and its cultures, people, traditions around her. She has a strong sense of self, confidence, fulfillment and purpose but is continuously working on her personal growth to achieve the best quality of life and balance of life.

She loves to stay active and by doing so she likes to work out as much as she can to keep the body and mind clear and healthy.

Amanda is a recent graduate from the University of Alberta 2010 in Elementary Education and Fine Arts (Music, Art, Dance, Drama). She also holds a designation as a wedding and event planner through Wedding Planner Institute of Canada which she received in April 2011.

In April 2011, Amanda entered a competition to be an Ambassador for Groupe Dynamite (www.dynamite.ca) in which she had to submit a fashion video, questionnaire about why she loves fashion and Dynamite, and a resume. As a result, her and five others won the competition from hundreds of applicants across Canada and are now the official Ambassadors’ for Dynamite.

Amanda started taking private flute lessons when she was seven years old. She then joined the Edmonton Sabers Marching Band and learned how to play in a band setting. As a result she travelled a lot with the band for field shows, concerts, parades, performances and tours across the country and the United States. At ten years of age and won her first personal award for Best Woodwind Player across Alberta under the age of 18. She then moved on to play in the Edmonton All City Band where she played solo flute, lead flute, and piccolo while still taking private lessons and playing as well in the Symphonic Band at her high school.

Amanda loved to draw when she was young and started taking art classes in junior high. At the age of twelve, she won the Artist of the Year award, beating out all the other students in her school. She continued to follow her passion and completed her first group exhibition at the age of fourteen. Her first painting ever, won a juried show and travelled across galleries in Alberta.

She started her art business under her name Amanda Morie in late 2010 (www.amorie.ca). Since then she has done five gallery showings, has two due for this year, been featured internationally four times in Aesthetica Magazine based out of the United Kingdom which sells internationally and signed on a huge solo exhibition for September to October 2013 at New Art Centre in New York, NY. She will also be represented at Artexpo 2012 New York, which is the worlds largest and oldest art fair. Amanda also recently published her first art book through the Brooklyn Art Library and will have the original book tour the entire year across North America to different galleries. The book is dedicated to young people who feel at a lost with themselves.

Amanda has a huge passion for animals’ especially homeless dogs in countries and cities where they are disregarded. If Amanda were to become Miss Universe Canada she would love to help organizations who work in rescuing animals and shed light on people of the big situation thousands of animals are facing in our country and others around the world today.

Another reason why Amanda wants to be Miss Universe Canada is because she wants to create lasting change for herself and for others by doing everything in her capabilities and to follow through with all the best that she can. She wants youth to have a role model they can relate to and be inspired by and know that they too can have the achievement of making a difference. She would also love to share her passion of art and education with the youth of our generation.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I love everything that life has to offer. Life is beautiful and we are here to love it and explore it. I love to maintain my life with active living and eating healthy. Your body is your canvas so show the world who you are! As an Ambassador for Groupe Dynamite, I love to inspire women to feel confident and beautiful in the clothes that they wear and to be proud of their natural beauty inside and out. Providing others with inspiration from my fashion, positivity and my constant drive to always succeed and better myself is a constant goal of mine and I am happy that I can achieve this everyday by being an Ambassador for Dynamite.

I have a keen interest in blogging and connecting with the world around me. I have two blogs. The first one is called Life Couture (www.life-couture.tumblr.com) which is a more personal visual diary of my thoughts and feelings about the luxury of life and all the simple little things. The second one is called Diamond Cut Style (www.diamondcut-style.tumblr.com) which is based on the idea that style can be so unique that it is like a diamond cut to perfection. I blog about the newest runway shows by designers, inspirational photos of fabrics or details, or unique artistic photos from magazine editorials around the world. I am a member of Independent Fashion Bloggers based out of New York and constantly share ideas with bloggers internationally about fashion. I have met and built connections with people from Teen Vogue, StyleSays.com and Ford Models only through the power of blogging. It is an amazing tool of communication and sharing ideas and I love it!

Some random interesting things about me are:

Art is also a huge passion of mine; it is something that I could not live without in my life. It keeps me balanced and creative and I have to do some form of it every day. I also love to spend time with friends, going to the movie theater and dancing with my dog to music in the living room! I love the color yellow, it makes me really happy. I am also addicted to avocados. They are so delicious! I love listening and spending quality one on one time with people. Those moments are way better then spreading them thin in a group. I am a huge fan of boxing. I couldn’t go a day with out wearing high heels or drinking bottled water in the morning when I wake up. I am an avid tea drinker. I love giant snowflakes, it makes me feel warm. I love to make people smile and do special things for them. Everything is always about the simple things.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I started taking private flute lessons when I was seven years old. I then joined the Edmonton Sabers Marching Band and learned how to play in a band setting. As a result I travelled a lot with the band for field shows, concerts, parades, performances and tours across the country and the United States. I learnt how to master playing by ear, memorizing songs that I had to play while at the same time performing for field shows or parades all at a very young age. It paid off when I was ten and won my first personal award for Best Woodwind Player across Alberta under the age of 18. I then moved on to play in the Edmonton All City Band where I played solo flute, lead flute, and piccolo while still taking private lessons and playing as well in the symphonic band at my high school.

When it comes to art, to me the heart is like a paint brush when it strokes across a crisp white canvas. Each stroke is unique unto itself, showing its distinct characteristics of the emotion evoked in that particular moment. With layer upon layer microscopic complexities of the heart are unloaded onto its viewers that surround it. That is what is so special about art- it makes the viewer see, listen, hear, touch and most importantly move the soul within. It can create an unspoken respect among people who may be from two different walks of life. It can build a foundation of friendship between the most unlikely candidates. This is what art means to me and the world around me. I started my art business under my name Amanda Morie in late 2010 (www.amorie.ca). Since then I have done five gallery showings, I have two due for next year, been featured internationally four times in Aesthetica Magazine based out of the United Kingdom which sells internationally and signed a huge solo exhibition for September to October 2013 at New Art Centre in New York, NY. I also published my first art book through the Brooklyn Art Library and will have the original book tour the entire year across North America to different galleries. The book is dedicated to young people who feel at a lost with themselves. The art book called Along the Lines…of My Thoughts is illustrated with inspirational thoughts and words that I say to myself everyday to keep me on the right track to being the most successful me that I can be. I am currently a member of Harcourt House Arts Centre, VAAA- Visual Arts Alberta Association and CARFAC- Canadian Artist Representation..

In university I focused on taking some drama classes. I wrote two plays and performed both at Timm’s Centre at the University of Alberta with a partner and a group. I also took modern dance classes and completed a choreographed routine with a group in the end of my modern dance classes. When I was little I also took Jazz classes.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Growing up I played basketball and grew to love free throw basketball. I went to provincials and won all tournaments with a 20/20 basket shot. I also loved to run and was always involved in cross country running as well as sprinting, 500 meter and long jump.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

The person who has had the most influence on my life would be my grandma Morie. She is incredibly giving, thoughtful and full of life. She was always involved in the community whether it was cooking food for elders (Meals on Wheels) or volunteering at the local museum to teach children about history or heading the book and tea club in town. These things always made me look up to her because she was continually learning and growing to extend her education and those around her. She is always poised and proper and you would never hear her say anything rude at all. She would always state, “Do not say anything at all unless it’s positive”. Isn’t that the truth! She is a great listener and loved to have heart felt conversations with me on how to grow as a lady. She makes me remember to always be patient, kind and to be selfless.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest accomplishment is pretty simple. For me it is allowing myself to be able to love and be at peace with myself and cherish my unique qualities. To tweak and build upon my strength and weaknesses to create a deeper understanding of myself, I have been able to break down my walls of fears and really learn how to conquer my dreams with a positive frame of mind. Without these key components I can not make my wildest dreams a reality. I am always learning and growing to build bigger steps for success. I recently reached my biggest step for my self and career which is being signed to my first solo exhibition from September to October 2013 at New Art Centre in New York, NY and as well as being part of Artexpo 2012 New York which is the worlds largest and oldest art fair. This is only the beginning for bigger steps to come.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most unique thing that has ever happened to me would have to be when I was chosen from hundreds of applicants across Canada to become one of six official Ambassadors for Groupe Dynamite. The first day on the job, we had a chance to visit the head office located in Montreal. Dynamite designs, creates, and ships all their clothing items and goods from their head office. For a fashionista like me, it was heaven to see the design room full of sketches, inspiration boards for their upcoming clothing lines for the season, their mock stores, to meeting their fit models, to see and learn how they chose and make fabric designs, right down to their racks and racks of clothes lining the hallways to the photo shoot studios and offices. It was extremely inspirational and I will always remember it!

The most interesting thing about me would be that I can look at anything and visualize it like how it would be as a painting and know what colors and paint brush strokes to use to achieve the “frame” or “picture” of what I am looking at. I call it my “painting eye”.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to be a more rounded international artist. Every day I have little goals that I try to achieve that compound into weekly, monthly, bi-annual and then annual goals. Without following these goals or achieving these goals I can not follow through in achieving the highest quality in my career. I am persistent, strong and confident that my career will be where I want it to be with the success of completing my goals.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

Unless its mad, fearless, extraordinary dreams, it is a waste of your time. There are too many mediocre things in life. Dreams should not be one of them. This is why I believe in myself and all that I am. I know that there is something inside of me that is greater then any obstacle. I breathe inspiration and trust my self that the answer is always “yes you can”. Somewhere deep inside we can all fly and I am flying reaching the sky and its brilliant stars achieving my passions, my dreams. My dream job is a reality; I have become a professional artist. A job that many people laughed at me and told me I could never accomplish but I did.

Are you currently a student?

No, I am a graduate from the University of Alberta 2010 in Elementary Education and Fine Arts (Music, Art, Dance, Drama). I also have my designation as a wedding and event planner through Wedding Planner Institute of Canada which I received in April 2011.

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

I and five others currently work for Group Dynamite as their official Ambassadors. Their clothing lines are located across Canada, the USA, the Middle East and Europe. After 35 years in the fashion business, Groupe Dynamite has successfully launched some of the most recognizable fashion brands in Canada. This spirited group creates, designs, markets and distributes from its head office located in Montreal, Quebec, and operates over 250 stores with more than 4,000 employees.

I also was fortunate to be hired back to Avison Young Commercial Real Estate Inc. as a receptionist after completing university. I worked there for two years prior to graduation as an accountant assistant. I am there full time during the week which helps supply funds to support my professional job and passion as an artist. Even though the school boards in Edmonton are at stand still for hiring new teachers, I still have hope that one day I will receive a full time teaching job in an elementary school or as a fine art teacher.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

“When you look at a person, any person, remember that everyone has a story.
Everyone has gone through something that has changed them.”

My childhood is my story. I believe that it has made me strong, independent, and headstrong to live life to the fullest. My parents divorced when I was six and my sister was one years of age. My mom is amazing because without her strong will to want the best for my sister and I; I seriously do not know if my life would be the same today. My mom went back to school to receive her CMA when my sister and I were young. My mom, sister and I spent a lot of quality time together as a family. Those times are the best memories I have and will continue to cherish them when we are together.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

When I was in my last two years of university I was working at Avison Young Commercial Real Estate Inc. as an assistant accountant. This was interesting to me because I love learning the ways a business operates. To see how Avison Young is leasing and selling land, offices and towers, retail space and malls, and industrial space basically shaping the city around us and the way we live is amazing. The principals that work there and started the company, (the company originated in Edmonton), are impressive to me for their business savvy and comprehension of the way the whole city works, lives, and functions.

List any volunteering you have done.

- I am currently a member of SCARS- Second Chance Animal Rescue Society and try to donate as much as I can to them. I would love to attend more adoption events and get more involved on that side of their work. As well when I am travelling aboard I like to carry food with me to feed homeless animals that I come across.

- In 2009 I helped coordinate with Avison Young a silent auction event for Red Cross where we raised over $10,000.

- From the years 2007- 2010 I was active with Presidents Choice Children’s Charity and donated money to them every month.

- I also volunteered to run and head an after school art work shop for children at the elementary school where I completed my last year of university in 2010.

- In grade eleven I attended a conference hosted by Youth Millennium Project (a charity based out of Vancouver) where I started to raise money with others to build a school in Iki- Iki, Uganda, Africa. The school is for children who have been taken from their homes in the middle of the night by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) and have been enslaved to work for them, sexually, physically, and mentally abused. This school gives them a place to sleep eat and learn so their futures will be bright like the rest of us who are so fortunate.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent would have to be throwing a football. I can throw it far, really far!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Everything has beauty but not everyone can see it. For me the most beautiful and interesting places are the ones where people live their life as a luxury and enjoy all the simple little things. I have first discovered this in the slums of Mexico City. I can still picture my first arrival there in my head accompanied by the sounds, sights, and smells. People living in crumbling buildings or on the streets with any materials constructing a roof, the abandoned dogs wandering deathly thin through out the hungry streets, the little children begging passers to buy Chiclets and lollipops, and the heavy smog looming above us. This is the life where no one takes anything for granted, where a hand-me-down shirt could be a treasured item for them for many years and where a five minute shower could wash three people at once with no water wasted. It’s amazing to see a child’s face light up from the happiness of you just being there offering them a piece of the world that you can share with them that they would never experience otherwise.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

- In the next ten years I would like to first of all accomplish becoming Miss Universe Canada and try with all my ability to win Miss Universe.

- I want to be signed to at least three art galleries for representation internationally.

- I want to exhibit my art on a larger international scale then I already have and exhibit at least once in all of the following places: Brazil, Mexico, Dubai, Vienna, China, South Korea, London, Colombia and Indonesia.

- I want to travel to a third world country and teach in a school or help a community.

- I want to receive my masters at Julliard in New York or Emily Carr in Vancouver.

- I want to and would love to start a co-op art gallery with studio spaces and curate art from international emerging artists.

- I want to teach art part time to young children.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I wanted to thank you all so much for this amazing opportunity that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Your time and consideration of me has not been over looked and I appreciate all your constructive feedback and help. Thank you again!

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

One person that definitely has an influence on my life is my aunt. She is the type of person that you can admire for her patience and involvement in the community. When it comes to giving a helping hand, she will always be there with a smile and enthusiasm. I find that when she is around, she has a heart of gold that can be seen, admired and undeniably pleasurable to be around; someone you would want as a positive role model in your life.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Throughout my childhood and up until now I have been truly blessed with so many opportunities to develop my skills and talents. Everything that I have learned or gained is an important and proud accomplishment that allows me to look at life with a different perspective. Some of these skills that I have developed contribute to making me a better person.

Initially, I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment is having the opportunity to have met so many different ambitious and influential people through everything that I have done and had the chance to experience.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I am the type of person that tries always to settle things between others; in a way a mediator. With future plans of becoming a lawyer, I find this skill very beneficial to me and with many instances where disputes do arise I find myself in the middle trying to find a solution. I see this as a positive attribute that I possess because finding a result and helping others is an accomplishment in itself.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My future life plan is to become a successful corporate lawyer. The only way I can accomplish this goal is by using every skilled I have learned from textbooks, teachers, professors, and those around, and combining it with my determination to strive forward. The truth is that nothing cannot be accomplished when backed up with ambition and strong will power.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

A dream job for me would be one where I wake up in the morning happy, thrilled and excited to go to work. Ideally it would be a job that allows me to help others, has a significant degree of contribution to society and makes a difference in people’s lives. It would be a job that I look at as a hobby in life not a necessity, something that I need to do.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in the suburbs of Toronto in a very loving and caring family that gave me various opportunities to develop my talents and experience new things. I am truly lucky to have been able to participate in various extra-curricular activities from a young age.

However, it is not just the opportunities I had as a child that makes me the young woman I am today, but it is the lessons I have been taught by my parents. I have been brought up to believe that treating others like you would yourself is important and to never give up on anything—keep your head up high and keep trying.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Every job I have had has been an experience in its own. I have not had the opportunity to work in many workplace scenarios because of my busy extracurricular life. However from each workplace you get an opportunity to experience something new, interesting and unusual.

With every job valid life skills are learned, which allows you to take what is necessary from each situation and apply it later in life in different situations.

List any volunteering you have done.

Breast Cancer Society, Sick Kids Hospital, Free the Children, SOS Children’s Villages & Variety the Children’s Charity

What is your most unusual talent?

I would have to say that my most unusual talent is remembering specific details of things that I truly to do not even put an emphasis on trying to remember. For example. specific details in a room I once saw, or the exact page that talked about something specific in a book I read. It is sometimes the smallest, strangest details that stick out and for some reason I remember them.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place that I have been would have to be Williamsburg, Virginia. This place had the most fascinating culture and atmosphere, it was simply outstanding. It is a town within itself bringing you back hundreds of years and showing what life was like before, but doing so in the middle of the city with restaurants and attractions all around engulfing you with an interesting feel.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years from now I hope to be settled, hopefully have a family and be living a happy life. My main hope is to have accomplished my goals, but even more so not to have any regrets and no questions of “what if…?”.

I would want to be able to look back and be satisfied with my life and pleased with how far have come, looking forward to the next ten years.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I am the type of person that will try anything once. I love adventure and am not afraid of new experiences, doing new things and meeting new people. A quote that I find inspiring is “Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions,” (Albert Einstein) – it shows that only you can stop yourself from experiencing things in life to the fullest.

She describes the experience as the most influential moment in her life, driving her continued desire to not only give her time, but to continue to work hard so she can support these causes financially. She quotes Margaret Thatcher, “No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he only had good intentions.”

Alina currently is the manager of a Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto, She puts in long hours and is passionate about providing the best possible care. Languages spoken fluently (please include your native language if English is not your native language).

Russian, Romanian and English.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time I enjoy boxing to keep in shape. Also, whenever I get the chance to be adventurous I like to go target shooting or sky diving.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

As part of the curriculum at the Moldovan National Academy of Arts I have studied sketching, drawing, and fine arts. I am also board certified in pharmaceutical grade cosmetics and skin care. I am, and feel we all should be, trained and certified in CPR, you never know when you might have the chance to save a life.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

In high school I played for the basketball team. Currently, I incorporate boxing into my workout routine.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

Outside of my family, the person who has had the most influence on my life is Dr. Yaz at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic. I have learned a great deal from her by watching her enthusiasm and commitment to her business and how much pride she takes in providing the best possible care for her patients. There is no doubt that she has helped shape me into the person I am today.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Thus far, I feel that obtaining a management position at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic has been my proudest personal accomplishment. It is a demanding role as I direct a staff of 20 medical professionals on a daily basis.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

Coming to a new country, with zero knowledge of the English language or Canadian culture was a very interesting time in my life. Adapting to a new country and culture while starting school was challenging, but facing it head-on has made me feel I have the ability to accomplish anything.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I am very grateful for the opportunity that I have been given in the position that I currently hold. However, I would like to be financially independent so that I could concentrate more on helping issues close to my heart; for example, orphanages and schools in underdeveloped countries.

I recently travelled to Peru to learn more about these efforts and contribute first-hand. I am involved with several projects that are being developed in poor and impoverished areas concentrating on social development, education, and health care.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

I would love to have my own business in the beauty industry where I am financially free and I am able to launch a foundation to help less fortunate children in undeveloped countries.

Are you currently a student?

Yes

If yes, where?

Area of study: I am currently completing a business and leadership program at Seneca College.

In high school on Saturday mornings I worked at a fish market.

List any volunteering you have done.

What is your most unusual talent?

I am a really good target shooter, actually you could say I am a really good shot, but it sounds better when you put target in front of it.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have been to was Macchu Pichu (one of the Seven Wonders of the World).

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be running the most philanthropic beauty clinic in Canada with direct ties to multiple charitable groups. I would also like to experience motherhood, the greatest gift a woman can give is love for her children.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I am an epicurean and enjoy trying unique multicultural and diverse cuisines. One of the many delicacies that I have tried was a traditional Peruvian dish “Cuy Chactado” which is actually guinea pig. However I have to admit that well prepared cocoa and chocolate is my all time favorite.

Alicia George - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Alicia George

Alicia George | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 20

Height: 5'10"

Hometown: Surrey

BIO: Alicia is a very driven and compassionate woman who just entered into her third year as a full time student, towards a degree in economics as Kwantlen Polytechnic University and hopes to complete a joint Major in Economics and Business Administration at Simon Fraser University.

At 20 years old, Alicia has always had a passion for being creative and has always been an artistic, intelligent, well-rounded and respected young woman.

She also has an amazing work ethic by working as a customer service representative at Future Shop, as well as an office assistant at Canusa Wood Products in downtown Vancouver.

Not only does she work two jobs, but she also attends Kwantlen Polytechnic University as a full-time student working towards her degree.

On Alicia’s list of priorities, her family is number one. Coming from a very large family, having 5 brothers and sisters including a twin sister, as well as her loving parents, Alicia has always kept her family close at heart.

Growing up and following the footsteps of her older brother, Alicia has always had a very active lifestyle outside of school. Always being interested in running and being a part of a team, she joined various sports throughout her school years. The sport which she recognizes with the most would have to be rugby, which she played for four years and later went back and refereed and coached. By being on the Senior Girls Rugby team and in her last year being a captain, Alicia made extra effort to be a role model for the younger girls on the team. Not only was she someone the girls could look up to on the field but also off it.

Early on in high school Alicia participated in many different leadership courses and volunteering opportunities that presented themselves. She was always told that it was not about the recognition of others when doing a good deed, but the feeling that you got when doing something nice for someone else. Alicia volunteered with Hoops 4 Hope, a non-profit organization which created HIV and AIDS awareness in South Africa and Zimbabwe through sports and life skills camps.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

Some of my interests are that I love to paint and find inspiration for those paintings in my spare time. I also love keep active my friends and family by laying pickup games of soccer or badminton here or there.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I haven’t had any specific training for painting but I have always excelled in art in high school and I’m now taking a couple painting classes in University which I have done very well in.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

For 4 years I played Senior Girls Rugby at my high school. I played as a Forward on the team and my position was weak and strong side Flanker. I also played Basketball as well as ran for the cross-country team.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

One person who has had the most influence in my life was my family friend, Patricia Little. Pat took care of me and my brothers and sisters growing up as our mother’s friend who babysat us 5 days a week. She was more than a babysitter; she was like a second mother and had an amazing personality and work ethic which later reflected on us. Her nickname was DooDoo and even to this day we still refer to her as this because it was a nickname given out of love. She was a huge inspiration in my life and I love her dearly. Pat was diagnosed with Brest Cancer and being as strong a woman as she was, she beat it. A couple years later when I was 12 years old, Pat passed away from a second battle with cancer and it has left a hole in my heart ever since. I wish she could have seen me graduate high school, taken pictures with me at Prom, and to have been able to see me now, in this competition; it would have made her so proud.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment is learning how to drive because driving used to be something which terrified me, and I know that it also made my dad proud when I told him I passed.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most unique thing that has ever happened to me was travelling to another country alone with my twin sister and being able to experience a vacation outside of Canada with her because a lot had happened since the last time we spent time away from the family together and it was the experience of a lifetime. I was able to experience New York City with my twin sister and I felt so proud being alongside her because she never had flown anywhere or been to another country before we went to New York.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to have graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Major in Economics and Business Administration, and to go straight from university into a large company which I would be able to excel at my job. Right now, to work towards my goal, I am completing courses towards the degree at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and I am in the midst of completing my transfer requirements to start the Fall 2012 semester at SFU. Once at SFU I hope to get into a co-op program where I am able to earn my degree as well as to have the opportunity to work in the field.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job in life would be putting my future economics degree to use at a large company and being able to be a powerful leader in my workplace. Although that doesn’t sound like an ideal job for most I would love to work my way up in a company like Will Smiths character, Chris Gardner , in the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness.”

Are you currently a student? Yes

If yes, where? Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Area of study: Economics

Are you currently employed? Yes.

If yes, what is your occupation? I am a customer service employee at Future Shop as well as an office assistant at Canusa Wood Products.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia with my 5 brothers and sisters and parents. We all grew up in a basement suit in Vancouver and later moved to a house with a lot more room in Surrey, British Columbia. My childhood was filled with family outings to different parks and attractions like the Aquarium or Science World. The summer time was always my favorite because my parents would always think of different things that we could all do as a family of 8.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

An interesting job that I’ve had would have to have been working at Grimm’s Fine Foods in the packaging department. I say it’s the most interesting because my dad had a condition for all of his children, once they turned 16 years old they went to work for the company he worked for, for the summer. Having to work at Grimm’s taught me the excellent work ethic that I use today in my various jobs.

List any volunteering you have done.

Since 2005 I volunteered with a non-profit organization called Hoops 4 Hope. Through sport, Hoops 4 Hope creates HIV and AIDS awareness in South Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as teaching them life skills through development camps and information centers. Not only is this done but throughout the year used sports equipment and shoes are collected and sent over to these camps to make sure the children have shoes and other pieces of equipment so they can have fun.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent would have to be being able to excel at anything to do with art, whether it be painting or sculpture, or even gluing macaroni onto a piece of paper, I’ve seemed to have mastered being great at it.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place that I’ve been would have to be New York City last year. I went for a week to visit my aunt with my sister and had an amazing time experiencing New York like a real New Yorker.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In 10 years I hope to be spending quality time with my family and making sure their needs are taken care of. I ideally would like to be settled down with a loving husband, enjoying life and as well as my job, and continuing to give back to my community. No one really knows what life will hold in 10 years so ultimately I would like to continue to have a good head on my shoulders, to hold my values close to my heart and to continue to be the sweet and kind person I am because those are the things that you will always be able to hold on to in life, not the material items.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

The most unique thing about me is that I have a twin sister, Danielle, that looks nothing like me and is my complete opposite. She’s the best part about being me because I get to say I have an amazingly different sister like her. Although we may not always get along, we have a connection that runs deeper than anything that can be measured and I admire and look up to her and her strengths.

Ali Sarchuk - Miss Universe Canada 2012 Profile

Miss Universe Canada 2012 Ali Sarchuk

Ali Sarchuk | Miss Universe Canada 2012

Age: 22

Height: 5'10"

Hometown: Saskatoon

BIO: Throughout Ali’s adolescent years, she had undertaken bullying nearly daily – whether that be from being overweight or taller than most of her peers. As such, she struggled to even complete high school education.

Although Ali was a very unpretentious and intelligent girl, the trials and tribulations from high school seemed to put a damper on her emotional and physical mindset. Fortunately, she had her family to always be behind her; pushing her through the state of enmity.

Upon graduation from high school, Ali set out to make a complete lifestyle change to transition herself into the successful, confident, and intelligent girl everyone knew she was. Within a few months after high school graduation, Ali enrolled in her first year of university with the University of Saskatchewan.

Although she wasn’t entirely sure as to which career path she wanted to endure, she knew it was within law. Consequently, she has now obtained two post-secondary diplomas with honours in the legal field (she has also obtained the highest typing speed within her college, typing an astonishing 120 words per minute).

She has worked in law firms within Saskatoon for nearly two years. In the beginning, Ali was unsure if she was ready to undertake the challenges and educational advancements to become a lawyer. However, she is now on the path to pursuing just that. Ali will be writing her Law School Admission Test this fall in hopes of being accepted into law with the University of Saskatchewan in 2013. Her focus within law will be on criminal law as she has had a strong passion for such throughout her entire life.

Aside from Ali’s educational background, Ali is a very talented piano player. Piano playing is a skill that proved to help Ali “escape” from the tribulations of high school; therefore, she has been playing piano for many years. She believes that the ability to augment the sound of a note with simply a touch is a subtle yet striking way to show passion within music. Ali has received her Grade 8 certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and as such has received a silver medal for receiving the highest mark in Saskatchewan on one of her Royal Conservatory of Music’s exams.

Ali also has a very healthy lifestyle, which has turned her into a role model within her community. Being overweight for many years, Ali has successfully lost 45 pounds and has immensely transformed her life. Eating smarter, working out, and being active are the three main ingredients to a healthy lifestyle which Ali is proud to have conquered. Ali is now following a strict fitness routine to keep up her physical health, and as such helps her friends and family with doing the same. Everyone who knows Ali truly believes that she is an inspirational success story. From facing bullying, which had nearly altered her entire life, Ali is a strong believer in helping to raise awareness for such a cause. Ali has written an autobiography based solely on her mislead tribulations throughout her adolescent years. This autobiography has been offered to be featured on the television shows Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, and Dr. Drew.

Ali strongly believes that victims of bullying are the best individuals to speak to the public about the same; therefore, Ali will be helping out with the Red Cross Pink Shirt (anti-bullying) campaign this spring and will be doing the same in the future annually. Finally, Ali is extremely family oriented; her family has been her constant stable support group throughout her entire life. Ali’s grandmother including other family members have been diagnosed with cancer and the majority are survivors. Because of this, Ali was proud to have appeared in a published 2011 calendar (month of June and cover model) to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. She will be volunteering her time to helping organize the same calendar for 2013.

Ali truly is an inspirational woman who believes that one person is able to make a difference within society. Miss Universe Canada stands for intelligence, beauty, confidence, and a giving soul. As such, Ali is striving to prove that these four outstanding qualities truly do make for an inspirational role model and she is pursuing the path to being just that.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I absolutely love playing the piano as I have been playing for many years. I have received my Grade 8 certification with the Royal Conservatory of Music and am able to teach if I so sought. I have also won a silver medal for getting the highest mark in Saskatchewan on one of my Royal Conservatory of Music piano exams. Aside from piano, I love modeling. I have been modeling for four years (print, commercial, promotional) and have shot with photographers from around the country. I have also had the opportunity to model in a printed 2011 calendar which promoted breast cancer research, and I have done promotional shoots for a motorcycle company as well as a shoe and clothing store. Most of all, I love travelling. I have travelled through Canada, USA, Cuba, and am going to Jamaica in March. I love being able to have the sense of being free and exploring other cultures – it is revitalizing.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I have special training in piano playing – I have received my Grade 8 certification with the Royal Conservatory of Music. I have also received my Serve It Right certification from the Government of Saskatchewan.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Although I love playing and being involved in sports, I will admit I am not very good. Throughout high school I was part of our high school’s basketball team. Aside from that, I love attempting to snowboard and wakeboard; however, those who watch probably get a good laugh.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My best friend Alicia has had the most influence on my life aside from my parents. My adolescent years proved to be full of trials and tribulations; therefore, it was most definitely a struggle for me. Finding true friends and putting the dark endangerments of drugs and alcohol behind was a very realistic problem within my adolescence. However, Alicia was always by my side helping me through my problems, even though at the time I wasn’t sure that was her main intention, as she consistently told my parents about substance abuse (in order to help me). She is still by my side and supports me through everything that I do. We have been through tears and laughter; however, she truly is someone I look up to.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Thus far, my proudest personal accomplishment is obtaining a post-secondary education. After being enrolled in my first year of university I was extremely unsure as to what was ahead for me; therefore, I debated not going to school at all. However, upon finding the realization that my ideal career is in a law firm, I obtained two post-secondary diplomas with honours in the legal field. Subsequently, I also graduated having the highest typing speed of 120 words per minute from the college. I am now looking to further my proudest accomplishment by getting accepted into law with the University of Saskatchewan and obtaining a career as a lawyer within Saskatchewan.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

One of the most oddly interesting things about me, which transpires into the most interesting things that have happened to me, is that I seem to be very lucky when it comes to winning large prizes. Up until a few years ago, I was convinced that I was the most unlucky person I had ever met. I had dislocated my knees about 20 times in total (some having happened from the simplest things such as putting on pants), and my name seemed to be situated with the common idiosyncrasy of being “unlucky”. Although I believe that luck is simply a coincidence within a situation, it seemed that my luck had changed when I was 20 years old. While attending an employer’s Christmas party with a friend, it turns out we had won a trip for two to anywhere in the world we wanted to go (up to a $2000 value). Needless to say, within a few months we were headed off to Cuba for free. A few years later and I had also won many concert tickets, promotional event tickets, and countless other prizes which seemed to make my name well known around the city. Finally, I had heard that there was a contest on a local radio station where a few lucky individuals were able to win a trip to Las Vegas – a 17 hour fun-filled trip which proved to be full of experiences. For the entire week that the contest was played on the radio station, I was awake at 6 a.m. waiting for the “cue-to-call”. Four days went past and it was the last day of the contest; my roommate was amused with me since I was determined to win a ticket to Las Vegas – I had even been using her alarm clock radio just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. On the fifth and final day of the contest, I heard the “cue-to-call” and immediately dialed the number. Within a few seconds, the announcers had picked up, asked me the winning question, and I was told I had won two tickets to Las Vegas for a 17 hour overnight excursion. A couple of months later and I was off to Las Vegas for a 17 hour overnight trip with the announcers and the other winners of the contest. I strongly believe that this is a mere glimpse of my motivation and determination which allows me to always have a positive outlook.

Although my luck seems to have reached a peak lately, I strongly believe that I have enough motivation to put aside the stereotypical coincidences of “luck” and will be travelling around the world simply because of my own strong interest in other cultures. As such, I look very forward to doing so.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career goal is to obtain a career as a lawyer within Saskatchewan. I currently have the amount of schooling required to be accepted into law at the University of Saskatchewan. Therefore, I will be writing my Law School Admission Test this fall in order to get accepted into law at the University of Saskatchewan for the following fall. Although I have been a real estate legal assistant for two years, my true passion is within criminal law and that is where I hope to find my ideal career.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would be someone who gets to travel the world to explain what it is like. Travelling is a strong passion of mine – the revitalization and ability to see new cultures is absolutely breathtaking. There are so many places outside of our country that are stunning – whether that be the white sand and crystal blue water of Fiji, to the local tribes in Africa. Every nation has something very different to offer and I would love the ability to gain knowledge within every aspect of our world.

Are you currently a student?

No

Are you currently employed?

Yes

If yes, what is your occupation?

My current position is the Sales and Marketing Coordinator at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel Saskatoon. I am in charge of researching, writing and editing posts that are to be published on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Trip Advisor) for both the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel Saskatoon and The James Hotel Saskatoon. In addition, I proofread, update, and maintain the Sheraton’s two websites – independent and corporate. I develop and maintain all social media strategies, as well as marketing strategies throughout the hotel. Aside from the social media aspect, I am in charge of all design for the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel Saskatoon (including Carvers Steakhouse, Windows Restaurant, 6Twelve Lounge, The Express, and The Link) and The James Hotel. I am in charge of writing, creating, and designing all collateral for both hotels (gift certificates, menus, posters, brochures, etc.) and have numerous advertisements which have now been published. Aside from the creative side, I am essentially the information technologist as well. I provide support and troubleshoot problems that are computer related to all of my coworkers.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I am originally from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and as such, was raised there. My childhood proved to be full of laughter, rosy cheeks (whether that be from the frigid winters and tobogganing or embarrassing moments) and entertainment. At a very young age I learned the importance of having respect for your elders – within that lesson I learned to have respect for everyone around you as well. Having been raised within a polite and respectful family I truly believe that has a strong impact on who I am today. Within elementary school I was always a playground leader – someone my elders could rely on, yet those younger than me could look up to. I absolutely loved putting a smile on everyone’s faces which subsequently brought the same to mine. Aside from congenial personality, I absolutely loved being the entertainer. Whether that was singing at the top of my lungs at home to The Backstreet Boys, or doing in-school plays and talent shows – I was always looking for ways to entertain people. My entertaining abilities were closely followed with a lovable sense of humor. In one of the talent shows I was asked to sing a Dolly Parton song. Upon acceptance and show time, my shirt was filled with blown up balloons to resemble the country singer’s more than ample chest. Needless to say, I gave the entire audience a smile.

I am very honored to say that I have come from one of the most amazing families I have ever known; therefore, my childhood was an absolutely memorable one that I am very blessed to have had.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Thus far, the most interesting and unusual jobs I have had have all stemmed within modeling. Although female models are often photographed in ways the photographer believes shows their beauty – soft, sensual, beautiful, many of my photo shoots have been concept shoots which disembodies the “pretty” model stereotype. Yes, I have done many photo shoots which have undertaken the fashion and glamour aspects; however, I have done many concept photo shoots which rely on the model’s look and attitude to have an edge and uncommon look.

The unusual concept shoots are definitely my favorite as they allow me to expand my talent within modeling and play a different role than usual. My hair in these photo shoots is usually backcombed and curled to the point where I look like a prison escapee who hasn’t had the opportunity to touch their hair within a few years. My makeup is often off-kilter; extravagant makeup which augments its look from bright, bold colours to dark, gothic pigmentation. The wardrobe is always eccentric, therefore allowing me to express myself in ways that do not fall within the usual realm. Concept shoots are largely based on creativity and imagination; therefore, I believe that they stand out from normality in an awe-inspiring way.

List any volunteering you have done.

Aside from volunteering my time modeling to help promote companies, I was involved in a breast cancer research fundraiser. I donated my time to help model and organize a 2011 calendar which was published and printed. All of the proceeds went to breast cancer research; many close family members of mine have been impacted with cancer, including breast cancer; therefore, raising awareness of it is very important to me. The same calendar will be produced for 2013 and as such I will be donating my time to help organize that as well. I have also volunteered at many small things, such as selling hot dogs and burgers and working bingos to help raise money for my sister’s travel club. In addition, animals are very important to me – our cat which we currently have was originally found nearly deceased, frozen under a car. Therefore, starting in spring I will be donating my time to help with our local SPCA. I have also recently been asked to help out with a Pink Shirt Campaign to help raise awareness of bullying; therefore, I will be volunteering my time to be a speaker and help with this event in April. Upon being bullied for the majority of my adolescent years, bullying is something that sits very close with my heart. Therefore, I plan to help out with the Red Cross’ Pink Shirt Campaign annually.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent is one that is normally found being derived in television commercials and magazines. It is common sense that there are muscles all over one’s body; however, not everyone knows how to flex certain muscles within differing parts of their bodies. Many people are able to flare their nostrils, twitch their ears, and flex numerous parts found on the human frame. Subsequently, many males (this is often seen within a very muscular frame) are able to make their chest (often referred to as “pecs”) do a chest dance, thereby flexing each chest muscle simultaneously. I am proud to say, yet embarrassed, that I also have this talent. Although flexing each chest muscle simultaneously is commonly seen in males, it is very rarely seen in females – whether that be it is not a common talent, or the female population is timid to share this talent. Either way, I am fortunate to say that I do indeed have this unusual talent of flexing my chest muscles simultaneously, thereby doing a “chest dance”.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Although I have previously been to Cuba, I have to say that the most interesting place I have been thus far is Texas. Many of my family members live in Texas; therefore, I have been there three times. Texas is interesting because of the many aspects of culture in the south that you wouldn’t expect to differ much from here – but do. First of all, you have the southern hospitality. Slight tips of cowboy hats, the clicking of cowboy boots and the ever-so-popular “ma’am” which is found within every Texan’s vocabulary seem to put you right at ease. Next, you have the “stickers” – small, prickly grasses that plunge into your feet with the ever-so-slightest step. Unfortunately, when I was first blessed with the opportunity to undertake Texas for the first time, I was unaware of these “stickers” As such, billowing out the door to go for a pleasant walk in the southern heat, I was soon sitting on the sidewalk picking out all of the horrendous, unfamiliar weeds which were embedded into my feet. If I were to have gone for a walk – I would have seen very large trees planted in the middle of the roads, making vehicles and other traffic (including possible armadillos which seem to be roaming around everywhere) direct themselves around either side of the overbearing trees. Since I didn’t go for a walk – I decided to stay and relax in my Uncle’s back yard. Not soon after I merged back inside of the house to undertake a bit of air conditioning, two small possums and a raccoon were outside of the back door eating out of the goats’ (my cousin was raising goats at this time to raise money) food dishes. Later that night while our family was enjoying a relaxing game of cards – yet another miniature, unfamiliar looking creature appeared. Within a few seconds I was hovering on top of the kitchen counter, while all of my other family ran to the living room; my Uncle had a hammer in hand. Upon realization of what was crawling around us, a poisonous, wild scorpion was in the middle of the kitchen underneath all our feet.

Thus, trips to Texas are never without entertainment; therefore, making it very easy to say that Texas is by far the most interesting place I have ever been.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

Although the future is essentially impossible to predict, there are a few traits within myself that are pointing me to the path I believe I will be on in ten years. Ten years from now not only do I hope to have a successful career as a lawyer within Saskatchewan, but I want to be successful in my familiar relationships as well. I hope to be a loving mother, good friend, supportive sister, loving wife and respectful daughter.

My ideal career is within criminal law; therefore, I believe I will have an expanding career within criminal law. Aside from the career aspect of my life, I absolutely love being near water – whether that be at the ocean or lake. Subsequently, I believe I will have a cabin at Candle Lake – a venue which has played a large part within my life. I’m also hoping I will have a large, modern, yet family-based house – complete with an English bulldog, kitten, remarkable husband and two children.

Finally, within ten years I hope to be able to tell stories of how I have travelled the world. Thus far I have travelled around Canada, the United States, Cuba, and Jamaica. Gaining knowledge on other cultures around the world is something that holds a strong passion within my heart – intelligence may be found within textbooks and universities within our nation; however, wisdom may be found within very poor, uneducated tribes within Africa who have learned how to love and survive based on the bare necessities they have had since birth. I would love to be able to educate everyone that intelligence is not the same as wisdom, and be able to provide personal evidence of how this is so as I strongly believe that those whom I will meet will forever have an impact on my life.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

My pageant journey thus far essentially reminds me of the movie ‘Miss Congeniality’. Throughout my past I was always the one who was never seen as the socially acceptable portrait of beautiful, and subsequently I seemed to lack confidence in myself. If you would have asked anyone five years if I would be entering the Miss Universe Canada pageant, they would have convulsed in disbelief. My adolescent years were full of bullying directed at myself; therefore, my coping method was to chuckle with those who bullied me just to pretend it didn’t hurt me.

Up until one year ago, I was overweight; 190 pounds, and was so self conscious from being bullied because of my height that a pair of heels was never to be found in my closet. I am very proud to say that I have overcome all of these tribulations and am now seeking to help others do the same. Upon a full life style change, I have gained an immense amount of confidence in myself. I have lost 45 pounds, and have adjusted my wardrobe size from a size 12 to a size 4. Consequently, I now have confidence in how I look, and have confidence to show others the amount of intelligence I have. Many people see a tall, blonde, pretty girl as being stereotypical of unsuccessful roles. However, I have currently obtained two post-secondary diplomas with honours in the legal field, have obtained my Grade 8 certification with the Royal Conservatory of Music in piano, am seeing to enter law school with the University of Saskatchewan to become a lawyer, and have made an immense impression on everyone I’ve met. I strongly believe that anyone is able to achieve and overcome whichever tribulations and goals they choose; therefore, I am very passionate about anti-bullying campaigns, and hope to be able to speak to the public about my journey as I strongly believe that I am able to make an impression on the victims (and doers) of bullying.
