Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler visits Manila, Philippines

Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler, the reigning Miss Universe, arrived in Manila to participate in the festivities leading up to the crowning of Binibining Pilipinas 2014 to be held on March 30th. Singer Emin is scheduled to perform.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler arrived in the Philippines accompanied by the organization’s President, Ms. Paula Shugart. She met with other beauty queens and participated in a press conference.

Gabriela may come from Venezuela. But she identifies with Filipinos. She knows the Philippines is a pageant-crazy as her home country.

“The greatest fan base of Miss Universe is in the Philippines,” she told media men in a press conference on Thursday, March 27.

The destruction Supertyphoon Yolanda brought to Eastern Visayas a day before she was crowned Miss Universe in Moscow broke Gabriela’s heart. And she can’t just sit there doing nothing. Gabriela will go to Coron in Palawan to help and cheer up the typhoon victims.

Empowering women and children

Gabriela will help crown the Bb. Pilipinas winners on Sunday, March 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “I want to empower more women and children and become a role model (to them). I want to help the community.”

Helping others is second skin to Gabriela. In a dinner program to promote AIDS awareness, she ate with people stricken with the HIV virus and even lingered in the dessert station.

“I talked to them. These people just need our support. They need to feel like normal persons. They feel so happy when they see you’re human, and you keep it in your heart.”

When she was in New York, Gabriela volunteered to provide meals daily to people with HIV. Gabriela must have her mom’s words of wisdom at the back of her mind all the time.

Life is about karma

“She taught me that life is (all about) karma. If you give, the more will be given e to you. I love to help people and get this chance to be a role model, not just for beauty but also for charity.”

Besides having a good heart, Gabriela’s mom must have taught her about the virtue of simplicity.

“I like to be remembered, not as Miss Universe, but as a normal person, a simple girl. Little things make me happy. I want to show that you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be real, show your feelings and emotions.”

When she helps crown the Bb. Pilipinas winners on Sunday, March 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Gabriela wants to offer her a no-nonsense advice.

Confidence is the key

“Show confidence in your movements, your words. You can have a beautiful face body and hair. But if you don’t have confidence, you don’t show personality. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will.”

She urges the next batch of beauty queens to enjoy their once-in-a-lifetime moment on stage.

“Smile, dance! Enjoy the finals night!”

Her advice also applies, not just to beauty contestants, but to anyone facing a big moment in his life.
