Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler visits Manila, Philippines

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler visits Manila, Philippines

Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler, the reigning Miss Universe, arrived in Manila to participate in the festivities leading up to the crowning of Binibining Pilipinas 2014 to be held on March 30th. Singer Emin is scheduled to perform.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler arrived in the Philippines accompanied by the organization’s President, Ms. Paula Shugart. She met with other beauty queens and participated in a press conference.

Gabriela may come from Venezuela. But she identifies with Filipinos. She knows the Philippines is a pageant-crazy as her home country.

“The greatest fan base of Miss Universe is in the Philippines,” she told media men in a press conference on Thursday, March 27.

The destruction Supertyphoon Yolanda brought to Eastern Visayas a day before she was crowned Miss Universe in Moscow broke Gabriela’s heart. And she can’t just sit there doing nothing. Gabriela will go to Coron in Palawan to help and cheer up the typhoon victims.

Empowering women and children

Gabriela will help crown the Bb. Pilipinas winners on Sunday, March 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “I want to empower more women and children and become a role model (to them). I want to help the community.”

Helping others is second skin to Gabriela. In a dinner program to promote AIDS awareness, she ate with people stricken with the HIV virus and even lingered in the dessert station.

“I talked to them. These people just need our support. They need to feel like normal persons. They feel so happy when they see you’re human, and you keep it in your heart.”

When she was in New York, Gabriela volunteered to provide meals daily to people with HIV. Gabriela must have her mom’s words of wisdom at the back of her mind all the time.

Life is about karma

“She taught me that life is (all about) karma. If you give, the more will be given e to you. I love to help people and get this chance to be a role model, not just for beauty but also for charity.”

Besides having a good heart, Gabriela’s mom must have taught her about the virtue of simplicity.

“I like to be remembered, not as Miss Universe, but as a normal person, a simple girl. Little things make me happy. I want to show that you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be real, show your feelings and emotions.”

When she helps crown the Bb. Pilipinas winners on Sunday, March 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Gabriela wants to offer her a no-nonsense advice.

Confidence is the key

“Show confidence in your movements, your words. You can have a beautiful face body and hair. But if you don’t have confidence, you don’t show personality. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will.”

She urges the next batch of beauty queens to enjoy their once-in-a-lifetime moment on stage.

“Smile, dance! Enjoy the finals night!”

Her advice also applies, not just to beauty contestants, but to anyone facing a big moment in his life.

Former Miss World Linor Abargil's new Advocacy

Miss World 1998 Linor Abargil and daughter
Former Miss World Linor Abargil, who was stabbed, strangled and raped at knife point, poses with her 4-month-old daughter at her home in Netanya, Israel, on March 18.

When 18-year-old Israeli beauty queen Linor Abargil was crowned Miss World in 1998, the tears streaming down her cheeks appeared to be the overwhelming joy of a young woman fulfilling a dream. Few knew the painful truth behind them — that just six weeks earlier she had been raped at knife point.

Miss World 1998 Linor Abargil

Unlike most victims of sexual assault, Abargil refused to keep quiet. She pressed charges, spoke out publicly and testified at a trial that sent her attacker to prison for 16 years.

Her ordeal inspired other Israeli women to break their own silence and in the process, she became a national symbol who helped de-stigmatize rape in the country.

Today, the 34-year-old mother of three’s crusade against sexual violence is going global, thanks to an international speaking tour and new documentary, “Brave Miss World,” in which she details her ordeal and speaks to dozens of other victims, many of whom shared their horrific tales for the first time.

“If you go through something very bad or very hard, the only pill you can take is to tell, to take it out of your system. Because if you don’t, it is like a tumor — it becomes bigger and bigger until it kills you,” she said. “I feel that I have this privilege to really help other women to open up.”

In “Brave Miss World,” director Cecilia Peck chronicles Abargil’s journey from rape victim to outspoken lawyer and activist and finally to wife and mother who discovered a newfound comfort in her Jewish faith. Interviews with her parents, her husband and even a former boyfriend shed light on how the rape altered her life but also how her strength helped transform her into an unlikely ambassador.

In the documentary, shot over four years, Abargil listens to the stories of rape victims ranging from American college students to young South African girls to Hollywood celebrities like Fran Drescher and Joan Collins — who disclosed for the first time that she married the man who raped her.

“There is something about Linor that gives credibility to rape survivors. They know that they will be believed, it helps relieve that burden of shame,” said Peck, whose previous work includes “Shut Up and Sing,” a documentary about the U.S. country singers the Dixie Chicks.

Peck, daughter of legendary actor Gregory Peck, said the film’s name was a subtle allusion to Aldous Huxley’s famous novel “Brave New World,” in which the government tried to control even citizens’ sex lives.

According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, America’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, 1 out of 6 American women has been the victim of rape or an attempted rape, with 60 percent of them unreported to police. The figures are similar in Israel and other Western nations and far higher in the developing world.

Peck said the film’s website has become a focal point for victims to speak out. More than 300,000 people have already visited the site, with many writing about the abuse they experienced. Hundreds of emails arrive each day, she said.

Abargil said she is not the type of person to just seek “justice for myself and then walk away.” Rather, she felt that as a public figure, she had a responsibility to break the taboo around rape and give other women the courage to talk about it.

It was not without a personal toll. “It was one of the hardest things I ever did in my life,” she said. “A lot of the time I didn’t have anything to say to the things that I heard.”

Abargil’s own story was just as horrific. She was in Milan in October 1998 auditioning for modeling jobs when she asked Uri Shlomo Nur, an Egyptian-born Israeli who ran a travel agency there, to arrange a flight back to Israel.

Nur told her there were no flights from Milan to Israel and offered to drive her to Rome, where she could catch a plane. During the ride, Nur pulled the car into a thicket, stabbed her, strangled her and raped her at knife point. She managed to escape and call her mother.

“Linor said to me, ‘He tricked me, he raped me, he tried to kill me,’ ” her mother tearfully recalled in the film.

She told her daughter not to shower, to report the rape to police and give DNA evidence at a hospital. That helped convict Nur in Israel. Still in prison, he is slated for release this summer.

Throughout the trial, Abargil refused to have her name concealed or her face or voice distorted in media coverage, insisting that there was no reason to be ashamed.

Miriam Schler, the director of the Tel Aviv rape crisis center, said Abargil gave rape a “human face” and her trial spurred a big boost in the number of women who sought help.

“She gives women legitimacy to come forward, to say ‘I am not crazy, it’s not my fault, if people believe her maybe someone will believe me,’ ” Schler said.

Abargil went on to work as a model and an actress before becoming a criminal lawyer. Newly religious, the bikinis and low-cut gowns of her past have been replaced by more modest outfits and a head covering befitting an Orthodox Jewish woman.

She said the “stupid crown” she won for Miss World would have meant nothing to her were it not for the platform it provided to speak out.

“I think I have a lot of very good things to say to women around the world,” she said. “I realized it (the rape) doesn’t define me, it can’t define me.”

Baton Rouge, Louisiana to host Miss USA 2014

Donald Trump announced on Thursday, March 13 that Baton Rouge will host this year’s Miss USA competition.

The 67-year-old entrepreneur owns the Miss Universe Organization, and spoke on behalf of the competition on Today.

“[Baton Rouge is] just a place that really wanted us,” Trump said. “We had about twelve places that were fighting for the rights, and we just decided [Baton Rouge is] sort of the home of pageantry, it’s sort of the home of the whole beauty thing.”

“They’re terrific people, and they’re going to put on a great show,” he continued. “Usually we got to Las Vegas… It’s great, but we thought we’d move it.”

In 2005, Baton Rouge played host to Miss Teen USA, but the devastation of Hurricane Katrina prevented the competition from returning to the city as planned in 2006.

“The sense of community that Baton Rogue has is incredibly inspiring,” Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart said in a press release. “The hospitality shown to us while we were there was second to none. I am looking forward to bringing an event back to Baton Rouge to experience the charm of the Capital City.”

Baton Rouge looks forward to the event as well. “It is an honor to host the Miss USA pageant,” Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said in a statement. “It is an incredible opportunity for Baton Rogue to shine on a national stage and I expect the delegates will enjoy our unique culture and joie de vivre.”

The competition will proceed in its usual format, with contestants from all fifty states and District of Columbia. Participants will be judged in the categories of swimsuit, evening gown, and interview. Last year’s champion was Miss Connecticut, Erin Brady.

Meanwhile, the Miss Universe Organization has confirmed that the 2014 pageant will not take place in Fortaleza, Brazil, as previously announced by the authorities of the Brazilian State. An official announcement is expected to take place soon.

The 2014 Miss USA pageant will take place at 8 p.m. ET at the Baton Rouge River Center Theatre on Sunday, June 8.

Philippines tries to bid and host Miss World 2014 pageant

Philippines tries to bid and host Miss World 2014 pageant

Although the 2014 finals are already set to take place in London (UK), Philippines is lobbying to host the event.

MANILA, Philippines (February 7th) – Manila Bulletin: Organizers of Miss World competition want the Philippines to host the beauty pageant’s finals in November of this year to showcase the world’s “coming together to rebuild the country” – one year after super-typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) swept through the Visayas.

Steve Douglas, the events director and producer of Miss World Limited, reigning Miss World Megan Young, and Miss World Philippines national director Cory Quirino sought Vice President Jejomar C. Binay’s support for their plan during a visit at the Coconut Palace in Pasay City Thursday.

Miss World Philippines is the national franchise of the Miss World pageant in the Philippines and selects the country’s representative to the said pageant. CQ Global Quest, Inc., managed by Quirino, acquired the franchise in 2011.

Douglas admitted their proposal is “ambitious” since the competition has already been set to be held in London, UK, this year.

But they are making a last-ditch effort to have the finals in the Philippines to contribute to the country’s efforts in rebuilding areas ravaged by Yolanda.

“They will expect to see the biggest and most prestigious pageant in the world to be hosted here by the Philippines. We will have a month-long celebration, celebrating the culture, the beauty, the fashion of the Philippines. And Megan will be in the center stage of all of these,” Quirino said, replying to questions what would Filipinos expect if the country’s hosting of the pageant pushed through.

She noted it is also “timely” for the country to host the pageant for the first time since it is Young who is the first Filipina to win the Miss World crown. The country’s hosting of the event, she said, has been on their wish list even before Young won the crown.

“And I guess it’s a sign from heaven when Megan won. And then right after that, a month later typhoon Yolanda happened to the Philippines,” Quirino said.

“So I guess there’s a message for Megan to help rebuild the country by bringing the entire world’s attention to the Philippines. And with global support, and by the Philippines’ hosting the Miss World pageant, we will achieve that goal,” she added.

After their meeting with Binay, they were set to talk to officials of the Tourism department Thursday afternoon to present their proposal.

They are also on “standby” for a meeting with President Benigno S. Aquino III, Quirino said.

As for where in the country will the competition be staged, Quirino said it is still being finalized.

Young said they will aim to show to the world the Philippines being a nation of survivors.

“We will be able to promote Philippine tourism around the world. Show people that the Philippines is already safe to go to. And we want to rebuild the Philippines, to show them that we are survivors,” Young said.

Binay said the proposal is “very convincing” since it would generate a lot of publicity for the Philippines.

He also agreed that hosting the event will help the Philippines in soliciting support for the government’s efforts to rehabilitate areas hit by Yolanda.

Douglas said Binay could be one of the judges if the country’s hosting of the competition pushes through.
