Miss Nicaragua 2011 Contestants

Miss Nicaragua 2011 beauty pageant will take place on February 26 at Teatro Nacional Ruben Dario in Managua and be broadcast live via Televicentro de Nicaragua Canal 2. The reigning Miss Nicaragua 2010, Scharlette Allen Moses (photo above) will pass her crown to her successor at the end of the contest.

The winner will represent Nicaragua at Miss Universe 2011 to be held on September 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Tribute to Miriam Stevenson, Miss Universe 1954

Miriam Stevenson representing the USA was crowned Miss Universe 1954 in a beauty pageant held on July 24 in Long Beach, California. She became the first American to win the crown.

Her win over the run-up, Miss Brazil, Martha Rocha was memorable for there was a tie between the two women for the crown. As Catalina was the major sponsor of the pageant in its early years, the tie-breaking judgment finally came down to who has the better physical figure, which went to Miriam Stevenson's favor, for she had the "fitter" hips over Martha Rocha.

Martha Rocha got the car that Miriam Stevenson won in her Miss USA 1954 prize package as a consolatory prize.

Gemma Cruz, 1st Filipina International Beauty Queen

Gemma Teresa Guerero Cruz (now Gemma Cruz-Araneta) is the first Filipina to win an international pageant. She competed in the Miss International 1964 Pageant in Long Beach, California. She is also the 1st Asian to win the coveted crown.

Her paternal great grandmother was Dona Maria Rizal, sister of the Philippines' national hero, Jose Rizal.

Gemma Cruz received an "Outstanding Manileña" and a "Golden Heart" Presidential decoration from President Diosdado Macapagal.



She earned the right to represent the country by winning the Miss Philippines pageant, sponsored by the City of Manila in 1964. Cruz donated the US$10,000 prize money she won as Miss International to Boys Town and Girls Home, a place where indigent and out of school youth are housed in Marikina City in the Philippines. This led Congress to pass a resolution to exempt her from paying taxes.

Miss Universe Kosova 2011 is Aferdita Dreshaj

23 year old Aferdita Dreshaj won the Miss Universe Kosovo 2011 or locally known as Miss Universe Kosova 2011 beauty pageant held on January 15 in Pristina. She was crowned by Miss Universe Kosova 2010, Kashtjella Pepshi.

Aferdita Dreshaj is a Kosovo-Albanian singer and model born on July 19, 1986 in USA. Her music single "Kiss me" became a hit in both Kosovo and Albania in 2010. She's currently in a relationship with Albanian singer Shpat Kasapi, whom amongst other things has participated in Festivali i Kenges 47.

Standing 6'0" tall, Aferdita Dreshaj will represent Kosovo at Miss Universe 2011 to be held on September 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Venus Raj & Binibining Pilipinas is now Kapamilya

Bb. Pilipinas - Universe 2010 and 4th run-up Miss Universe 2010, Ma. Venus Raj has moved to the Kapamilya network, ABS-CBN, according to a statement issued on January 14.

At the same time, the ABS-CBN announced its five-year partnership contract with Bb. Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPIC), organizer of the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant.

Present in the contract signing were Charo Santos-Concio, ABS-CBN President and COO, Cory Vidanes, ABS-CBN Channel Head, Linggit Tan, ABS-CBN Head of TV Entertainment Production, Stella Marquez-Araneta, Chairperson of BPIC, Conchitina Bernardo and Pitoy Moreno, members of the BPIC executive board, Sienna Olaso, BPIC Director for Marketing and Romy Tan, BPIC Head of Finance and Ms Venus Raj, 2010 Bb Pilipinas Universe.

Kapuso network, GMA 7, hosted the pageant for eight consecutive years (1998-2010). The station has yet to issue a statement.

Following this partnership, the Kapamilya ABS-CBN-2 network will be airing the 2011 Binibining Pilipinas pageant in March and the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant in September in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With the move, according to the same statement, the competitions can be watched not only in the country, but from all over the world through ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC).

“Venus Raj feels very proud to be part of the Kapamilya network. Before she signed a contract with ABS-CBN, she was special guest of some of the media giant’s special projects such as the 2010 Bayaning Pilipino Awards and the ABS-CBN Christmas Special, and a stint as a “hurado” in one of the network's leading talent shows like Showtime,” it said.

“I’m extremely honored to become part of the country’s biggest network. I’m proud to be a Kapamilya,” said Venus Raj.



The BPCI is founded by its chairman Stella Márquez-Araneta, a key partner in nation-building for over four decades, providing skills training, educational workshops, mission work and other relevant services for the marginalized sectors of the community, according to the statement.

The ABS-CBN Special Projects team headed by Chit Guerrero will spearhead the pageant’s production. The show will be directed by Johnny Manahan.
