Yilmaz: Only ‘business’ ties with former-Miss Universe

Yilmaz Bektas denied he was dating out a former Miss Universe, Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza last March 26, saying paparazzi photos showing them were of a “business” meeting. Yilmaz Bektas was reacting to published photos of him and Zuleyka, a Puerto Rican, in several publications in Turkey.

From a turkish columnist source said:

“After she arrived at the Ataturk Airport in the private plane, they chose to check in at the Hotel Les Ottomans King Suit, which is famous [among] the jet society. Since the hotel doesn’t have a heliport, they went to the Ciragan Palace first via helicopter. Then they boarded a black Mercedes car with two guards in tow.

“After resting in the hotel for a few hours, they went to the famous Zuma Restaurant. They didn’t want to be caught by the paparazzi so they came to the restaurant separately.”

In a statement, Bektas said his relationship with Mendoza was only for “business” and that he issued the denial because the photos “had negative impact on both mine and Zuleyka Rivera’s private and business life.”

“Zuleyka Rivera's visit in Turkey was only a business trip and I…accompanied her as a matter of courtesy,” Bektas said in the statement. He said he was with Mendoza at the restaurant in his capacity as board chair of the family business Intel Group of Companies, which has interests in several Turkish industries.

Bektas said the press wrongly “assumed” he and Mendoza had ties “far more than a business relationship” and that he was making the announcement to “avoid future troubles.”

Bektas figured prominently in news items last year due to his separation from wife and former Miss World 2nd run-up Ruffa Gutierrez, who charged him of physical abuse. Yilmaz, on the other hand, accused Ruffa of having a bigamous relationship with Filipino-American Richard Daloia, whom he alleged she was still married to at the time of their wedding in 2003.

Hillary Clinton have mercy on a Beauty Contestant of Miss Puerto Rico World 2008!

Hillary Clinton admitted it was a softball question. But beauty contestants already field plenty of hard queries, the Democratic presidential hopeful said in a video aired as part of the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant Thursday night.

Mrs. Clinton asked the question"I'm going to make it easy for you, Tell us what you love the most about Puerto Rico?"

Contestant Yashila Ayala beamed and mentioned several native treasures - historic San Juan, El Yunque rainforest and her hometown of Comerio - before touching on the day's biggest news: The announcement that 19 charges including conspiracy and corruption have been filed against Puerto Rico Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila.

"We're going through a moment of doubt and uncertainty, and islanders should unite and show the world their true values" Ayala responded.

Clinton and Democratic rival Barack Obama have been vying for votes in this U.S. Caribbean territory, where 55 delegates are up for grabs in the party's June 1 primary.

Acevedo, one of Puerto Rico's superdelegates to the Democratic convention, is backing Obama.

Free English Course for a Beauty Queen!

A Philippine government training agency on Friday offered free English proficiency lessons to the country's contestants to international beauty pageants following the poor showing of some candidates in a local competition. Augusto Syjuco, chief of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, lamented that English proficiency was declining among Filipinos and many students were neglecting the subject despite its importance. He said beauty pageant contestants can avail of a 120-hour crash course on English to help them prepare before they represent the Philippines in international pageants. "At the same time, we can also train them to answer the usual questions that are asked in pageants," he said. "They will be prepared not only on what to answer but also on what questions can be given to them."

Syjuco made the offer after the controversial win of a 17-year-old contestant in the Philippines' top beauty pageant, despite struggling during the question-and-answer portion in the final round of the competition. Janina San Miguel, left, who will represent the Philippines in the Miss World 2008 competition, fumbled when asked what role her family played in her bid to be a beauty queen. She started to reply, saying, "My family's role for me is so important because they was the, they are, they was the one whose very." But she failed to finish and laughed it off. She apologized, saying she never expected to make it to the "tough 10," and continued to reply, "My family was the most important persons in my life."

Despite her bumbling performance, San Miguel won one of the titles. She, however, has become the butt of jokes in the Philippines and outside the country after footage of the competition made it to a popular video sharing site.
