Dethroned Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2010, Maria Venus Raj

Maria Venus Raj, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2010 a few weeks ago and expected to represent the country at the 2010 Miss Universe pageant, has been dethroned by the organization due to questionable birth records. According to a representative of the Araneta Group, Legazpi native Maria Venus Raj was replaced due to some factual inconsistencies on her birth certificate.

She has been replaced by 2nd runner-up, Helen Nicolette Henson, a 21-year old model, host and travel writer who holds a degree in Journalism.

Helen Nicolette Henson who stands 1.75 m tall, has been appointed the new Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2010 and will represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant later this year.



Note that the 1st runner-up, Dianne Elaine Necio, was ineligible as she is only 17 years old. Miss Universe requirements state that contestants should be 18-26 years of age.

BIO: I graduated in Event Management from the University of Wales Institute last year and began work as a Barristers’ Clerk at a criminal law chambers in Cardiff. This has proved to be such a fascinating experience that I am now exploring the possibility of furthering my legal studies. I attended dance school, gaining President Award level in both disco and freestyle, while taking part in national competitions and shows. I represented my university at the annual British Universities and Colleges Sport event in the 100m sprint, and was part of the Great Britain Youth Squad. My love of travel has seen me visit many parts of Europe as well as the Caribbean, USA, Mauritius, Egypt and Mexico, where I was captivated by the ancient Mayan culture. BIO: My name is Prena Thapa and I am 18 years old. I was born in a town called Ealing. Both my parents are Nepalese but I was born in London. BIO: I grew up in a small village and had a quaint and loving childhood. I was a popular teenager and ran in the school cross-country team and excelled in drama studies. I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to go in until fate stepped in and turned my world upside down. My dad had suffered with diabetes since his teens but eight years ago his heart failed and he died. I suffered terribly without my dad but it opened something in me. I dealt with my grief through putting pen to paper, which resulted in being published in America. Even more than when he was alive, I wanted to make my dad proud. I am now studying to be a bereavement councillor to help those who were in the same situation as me. I am also achieving a lot of my dreams and goals and managed to sky dive and bunjee jump for charity. I battled Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for two years and am now back stronger than ever and feel I have the heart, passion and life experience to do well in Miss Universe GB and am looking forward to fundraising for The Joshua Foundation regardless of the competition outcome.

BIO: I'm proud to be a part of Miss Universe GB. I'm half Filipino and half Guyanese and have always possessed a passion for performing from a very young age. When I was eleven I started singing with my two sisters, which grew to performing at family events, festivals, competitions and at a charity event to help raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. I graduated in 2008 with a BA in Performing Arts. Since then I have pursued a career in modelling and acting. I won my first pageant, Miss Teen Philippines, in 2002. I then came second in Miss Asian Beauty Queen 2009, competed in Miss England 2009 and won Greater London at Miss Earth England 2009. BIO: One of my greatest achievements in life is becoming a doctor. I have always wanted to care for people and as I grew up, I found that my naturally inquisitive nature and love of sciences could make it possible. It has continued to shape my life, challenging every aspect of my character. It is truly an adventure rather than a career and one that I wouldn't change for the world. My second passion in life is sport. I have competed in gymnastics for many years and am now a qualified coach. After coaching in America I found cheerleading. On my return I took up the sport immediately, training my own squad and becoming a member of Loughborough Gold Rush, obtaining titles such as British University Champions and Co-ed level champions. I intend to combine my two loves by studying of a Masters degree in Sports Medicine. My dream is to one day be involved in major sporting events such as the London 2012 Olympics. I was proud and honoured to represent my country as Miss Wales in 2007. My year was a whirlwind of excitement including, becoming the Heineken cup princess, modelling for Ultimo and of course Miss World. During my reign I was made patron of SWS Cymru - a charity for sufferers of Scoliosis, as a sufferer myself, my hope is that I can reach young girls, with this disabling condition on a truly personal level.

I am 22 years old and I work as an estate agent in Barnsley, where I deal with residential lettings and negotiate sales. This is the first competition that I have entered and I did not expect to get this far. I usually spend my spare time in wellies down at the stables, but this year I will be trading them in for high heels to hopefully become Miss Universe GB 2010. The Miss Universe GB competition is supporting a great charity, The Joshua Foundation, and I want to do everything I can to raise money and awareness for the charity and help to fulfil my ambition to make a difference. My stepfather is currently undergoing chemotherapy so I understand how hard it can be and will be pulling out all the stops to raise as much money as possible through fundraising leading up to the final. BIO: My family and I moved to England in 1991 from Bosnia as a result of the Balkan conflict, and have lived in London ever since. I love to be on the move and enjoy travelling. Last summer I spent a few months travelling across Europe, crossing twelve borders to reach Turkey, without experiencing too many wrong turns! Being from the Balkans I come from a very diverse ethnic mix and am fortunate enough to be multilingual. In an attempt to expand my knowledge, I gained a degree in Geography and am working toward an MSc in Economics. I love to paint; for me it is the greatest means of self-expression and do so whenever I can. I have a black belt in Karate, which is always handy! I have competed at the dojo and have a few trophies to my name, though they didn’t come too easily. BIO: I have a passion for music and dance with experience in most dances styles, including ballet, contemporary, capoeira and hip-hop, often performing in dance shows for Rubicon’s Flagship groups. One amazing experience was dancing in Pineapple Dance Studios with the cast of the Lion King. When I’m not dancing and spending time with those I love, I study at Cardiff Law School, after gaining straight A’s in my A levels last summer. First year law has been fabulous and I have really enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. However, a long-deserved summer will be enjoyed. Other hobbies include reading and keeping fit. Highlights of the last year have been flying the flag for Cardiff, raising nearly £7,000 for The Joshua Foundation, being in fashion shows with the Welsh rugby team and going on stage with U2 in front of 70,000 people. I hope to study a second degree in Modern History part time alongside my Fashion Contour Degree, which will be very rewarding. BIO: I am 19 years of age and I have lived in Swansea all of my life. My main passion in life is modelling, which I've done since the age of 14, including promotional work all over the UK, taking part in a video of a photoshoot for an agency, various photoshoots with a number of photographers and even appeared as the cover girl on the August 2009 issue of Beauty Magazine. I’m the main face for the website of the well known clothing store Tempo and have taken part in beauty pageants including Miss Wales 2008 and Miss Earth UK 2009. I have taken part in a range of sporting activities including caving, kayaking, scuba diving and jet ski-ing. Another strong passion of mine is photography and I have achieved an A Level in this. I’m a PR and Communications graduate and work as a Projects Coordinator for the Royal Society of Architects in Wales. I am a dedicated supporter of the conservation movement and believe that everyone has a part to play in caring for and improving the environment. I stand strongly against animal cruelty and have been a vegetarian since 1992. A fluent Welsh speaker, I’m very sociable and love meeting new people. I make the most of opportunities, valuing every moment and enjoying the challenge of new experiences. I am currently taking a gap year during which I am studying drama part time at the Royal Welsh Colleage of Music and Drama. I have recently gained a supporting role in an S4C drama and filmed an ITV commercial for Western Power. Music plays a major part in my life. I play oboe, sing and study ballet. Singing has given me opportunities to raise money for charities e.g. singing solo for the Paralympic homecoming, solo for the BBC Red Hot Aids charity concert televised worldwide, Noah’s Ark Appeal and Guide Dogs for the blind. Working with children is very important to me as I have a genuine interest of being a good role model. I began running my own dance school at 16yrs and hold classes for 6-13yr olds who have just enjoyed being filmed for S4C television. BIO: I’m not your typical girlie girl. Studying animal management at Pencoed College, I spend most of my days in a pair of wellies and jeans getting down and dirty with all number of animals from mice to pigs or snakes. In the future I hope to become a vet, and travel the world helping with conservation work to help save near extinct animals. You are also likely to find me at the local farm riding my horse or preparing racehorses for a race. I am a very family orientated person, as I spend lots of time with my family, which means the world to me. BIO: After my A-levels I went to study at the Mary Reid International School of Beauty, graduating with a diploma in Beauty, Body and Holistic Therapies. During my studies I worked in the hospitality industry, organising various corporate functions, events and parties, and worked by my way up to the position of assistant manager. In this role I was given the chance to take part in some fantastic fundraising events, helping to raise money for charity. I have been modelling for a few years now and love every aspect of it, however more recently I have taken a behind-the-scenes role and helped in the organisation of fashion shows, the choreography and the training of the models. I recently helped to organise the PETA charity show, the BSFXmodel launch fashion show and Ubergirl final. From a young age I found out i was dyslexic which caused me to have difficulties learning at school, however the best part about being dyslexic is it teaches you to learn your strengths and weaknesses very quickly - I can say honestly i would make a terrible politician or accountant! But I know I'm a great motivator - I'm good with people from all walks of life, I listen well and when faced with a difficult situation I make the best of it. My ambitions in life are to do as much as I can, see as much as I can, experience what the world has to offer and hopefully leave a meaningful footprint.

BIO: I was born in southeast London but was raised in St Vincent and, at the age of 11 discovered what culture was. I noticed that the mentality of Caribbean people was vastly different to that of people in the UK, and realised that I could use it to my advantage. Music has been a part of my life since birth with influences ranging from Kylie Minogue to MC Hammer. I can remember being so excited when I heard 'I Should Be So Lucky' - I knew then that I had to be an influence in other peoples lives like Kylie had been for me. But when I moved to St Vincent everyone was listening to Soca Music and Dub. Never in my life had I heard Soca music and they had never heard of Kylie’s music but I learnt to adapt to their way of life. At the age of 18 I decided to return to England. When I first arrived I had no luck as I suffered from severe acne which knocked my confidence, but like my mum said: 'what don't kill you, makes you stronger'. So with sheer determination I persisted with my dream. Now at the age of 25, I am honored to be given the opportunity to be a part of this exciting project and I feel that I am one step closer to succeeding in what I feel I am meant to do.

I strongly believe in charitable giving, and am intent on helping to achieve a better world through my involvement with charities. Growing up, I was a gymnast and was privileged to represent Great Britain on many occasions. In 2003 I achieved a gold medal for my balance beam performance. I felt that the previous ten years of hard training were just leading up to that very moment when they called my name and I had won. Being a gymnast is like being a marine. You can leave the marines but the marine will never leave you! The mentality of determination, achievement, elegance and graciousness never leave you, so every day I try to do my best and to be the best in all I do. In the future I would like to peruse a career in fashion. Since I was 15 I have read Vogue every month and dream to one day be a part of a high fashion magazine, either in set design or photography.

BIO: I am currently reading Physics at the University of Kent and was even just granted the post of Science College Official. Aside from my flair for the sciences, I also appreciates fine art, in particular the watercolour landscapes of William Turner. During previous years at school, I also completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to both Bronze and Silver level, which involved volunteering within the community, honing personal fitness and proving my mental and physical strength in the expeditions. Recently I have secured the installation of a pedestrian crossing at a nearby traffic junction, by petitioning my local authority - highlighting my eagerness to support issues that I feel are important. I have volunteered as a carer for those with life-threatening illnesses at The Ellenor Lions Hospice, for several years. Should I advance as Miss Universe GB to the international pageant, I will continue promoting women’s rights and freedoms as well as representing the nation at a very pivotal time in history.

BIO: I have travelled the world on modelling jobs as well as representing my country in the World Model competition. I started competing in beauty pageants from the age of three and through them have been able to raise a great deal of money for charities. At 17 I worked with the renowned Random Dance Company in London and choreographer Wayne McGreggor. In the last few years I have won Miss Cannes Film Festival 2010, Miss Flintshire 2009, Miss Fashion TV World Tour, Top Model Of The World (WBO), Miss Intercontinental (WBO) and Miss Hawaiian Tropic International in Las Vegas 2007. I trained at the Zoe Natheson School of Film Acting London and I am now at the Manchester School of Acting. In 2009 I made my film debut as a leading actress in Terror Nation, written and directed by Shane Darren Mather for Masochist Pictures. I wthen appeared appear in The Perfect Love Song, a film directed by music producer Samuel Victor. After winning Miss Flintshire in 2009 I was asked to be part of The Evening Leader News Team, and started writing a regular column for the paper. I am due to appear in Bill Little's new film production Realm of Darkness playing the Angel of Death. I have also recently finished filming for Bonded by Blood directed by Sascha Bennett which is due for release later this year.

BIO: I am an enthusiastic, confident and artistic individual. I am currently studying fashion & clothing and am an aspiring model. I think my family background makes me stand out from the crowd. I teach street dance and work in River Island as a Visual Merchandiser in my spare time. I have a real passion for the fashion & modelling industry and would some day love to work as a high fashion model in this competitive industry along side my inspiration Eva Pigford. I love posing in front the camera and am always posing in front of the mirror. I am an intelligent, reliable, strong and ambitious individual, who strives to reach my career goals. I am happy to take constructive criticism so I can use it to better myself. My favourite hobbies/interests are modelling, swimming, styling people, dancing, reading autobiographies, illustrating, singing, taking photos and strutting down the catwalk. I love illustrating designs and researching the latest fashion trend. I am unique and enjoy learning new skills and knowledge. My life evolves around fashion and modelling. Part of being a model is keeping up with the latest fashion trends and statements, whilst wearing them. Modelling is not just being a pretty face, it is about what I can bring with myself.

BIO: My name is Mhairi Brown, I am 24 years old and I live in Bothwell, Glasgow. I have really enjoyed my Miss Universe Great Britain journey so far and I have been able to meet people from all different backgrounds and communities. I currently work with Life Skills; a company committed to getting people back into work and help sustain their employment. I have a great passion for life and people and I find it incredibly rewarding helping others build confidence and realise their potential. My father is the Lanarkshire Chairman for the Princes Trust charity; he is my inspiration and has always actively encouraged me to get involved with charitable organisations to help raise funds and awareness where possible. I feel that it is important for young people to become more involved in charitable events and I am dedicated to continue to work with those less fortunate than myself and feel that through Miss Universe GB competition, I can continue to send out positive messages and reach a greater audience.

BIO: I am 20 years old and live in Edinburgh. I currently work in retail, do part time modelling and promotional work. In the future I am hoping to run my own Caribbean restaurant as my mothers side of the family originate from there and the food is so unique , tasty and homely. I would love to own a boutique where I sell dresses that I have designed myself. I am a very outgoing and positive person and things in my life have made me appreciate what I have. Winning Miss Edinburgh was a great achievement and has made me more determined to stand out from the crowd at the Miss Universe GB final. If I won Miss Universe GB I would use my status to help raise money for numerous charities. I find it hard to believe in this day and age people are still suffering all over the world and it breaks my heart. I want young women look up to the gracious, warm hearted and full of positive life winner and believe in themselves that any dream can come true.I have achieved a lot in the last few years coming 2nd in Miss Scotland was something really special and didn’t want the dream to end. In the future I hope to achieve all goals and hopefully set new ones!

BIO: After growing up in a creative environment I went on to Study 3D design: Spatial Design at University and achieved a first class honors. I have worked at an Architects in Bristol for 2 years and have been in numerous exhibitions and highly commended in an architecture competition as well as been published in Architects Journal. I feel it is very important to stay active, healthy and happy with the way you are. I am a keen cyclist, runner and kick boxer and in the past year have ran the Bristol 10k as well as the Cardiff Half Marathon, with hopes to run the London Marathon in the near future. I feel it is important to live and experience as much about your own and other cultures as possible. Whilst studying at university I was fortunate enough to study design at the university of Milan, Italy and it opened my eyes to a completely different approach to life, and gave me the opportunity to learn the basics of another language, and something I am passionate about continuing. In the future I aspire to help and influence others through design, creating enriching spaces for people to live and work in.

BIO: “Challenges are what makes life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” This quote pretty much sums up how I feel. I thrive on the idea of adventure and new challenges. Reachin the grand final for Miss Universe GB is both a great new adventure and wonderful and rewarding experience in itself. Gaining new experiences is a key part of my life as it has built my knowledge and understanding of the importance of what matters to each person I have met either through voluntary work or employment. One of my many achievements was being able to raise money for Amnesty International for women in deprived areas in Asia and the Middle East. The money raised helped the women to be educated and to support their families. Women’s rights issues is something which is close to my heart and I am determined in the future to help those who are vulnerable to get the right support, guidance and to be educated about the issues. My aspiration in life is to be happy and to be able to succeed in whatever I do whether that is my career or to help those who are less fortunate than myself.
